[Peri-osteocytic calcium fixation under calcitonin treatment. Microradiographic study using automatic analysis of images in 8 cases of osteogenesis imperfecta].

The authors treated eight cases of osteogenesis imperfecta using doses of 1 to 2 units of MRC over periods ranging from 6 weeks to 27 months. The lacunar surface area measured before and after treatment was greatly decreased as a result of the latter, probably as the result of marked calcium fixation around the osteocytes, though this effect seems to be transient. The hypothesis of an inactivation of calcitonin on a immunological basis or of a secondary hyperparathyroid reaction is suggested.

Efficient enamel subsurface lesion remineralisation and dentine tubule occlusion by high concentration CPP-ACP: a randomised, cross-over in situ study.

This study assessed the efficacy of 60% CPP-ACP to remineralise white spot lesions (WSLs) in enamel and to occlude patent dentinal tubules in a double-blind, randomized, cross-over, in situ study. Human enamel specimens with subsurface lesions (WSLs) and root dentine specimens with open dentinal tubules were prepared and inserted into intra-oral appliances worn by volunteers. Participants wore the appliances 24 h a day for four 14-consecutive day treatment periods with a 7-day washout period between treatments. Four treatments applied with a micro-brush once daily were 60% CPP-ACP with and wit

Microcalcification clustering parameters in breast disease: a morphometric analysis of radiographs of excision specimens.

X-ray microradiography of surgically excised breast specimens offers the possibility of morphological characterization of calcifications. When combined with digital imaging techniques there exists added potential for obtaining valuable basic quantitative morphometric information regarding differences between microcalcifications in tissues exhibiting evidence of fibrocystic change, benign and malignant tumours. A total of 157 excised breast specimens from 84 patients were microradiographed using a Softex Super Soft X-ray unit and Kodak AA high resolution industrial film. A Quantimet 570C image

Cartilage damage involving extrusion of mineralisable matrix from the articular calcified cartilage and subchondral bone.

Arthropathy of the distal articular surfaces of the third metacarpal (Mc3) and metatarsal (Mt3) bones in the Thoroughbred racehorse (Tb) is a natural model of repetitive overload arthrosis. We describe a novel pathology that affects the articular calcified cartilage (ACC) and subchondral bone (SCB) and which is associated with hyaline articular cartilage degeneration. Parasagittal slices cut from the palmar quadrant of the distal condyles of the left Mc3/Mt3 of 39 trained Tbs euthanized for welfare reasons were imaged by point projection microradiography, and backscattered electron (BSE) scann

Enamel ultrastructure and protein content in X-linked amelogenesis imperfecta.

X-linked amelogenesis imperfecta has been proven in a number of families to be linked to or involve a variety of mutations in the X chromosome amelogenin gene. The purpose of this study was to characterize the enamel ultrastructure and enamel protein in a kindred affected by X-linked amelogenesis imperfecta. Exfoliated primary teeth were obtained from two related persons (one male, one female) who had X-linked amelogenesis imperfecta with marked hypoplasia. Normal enamel (age and sex matched) was used as the control for all analyses. The teeth were evaluated using light microscopy, scanning el

Evidence of an in vitro Coupled Diffusion Mechanism of Lesion Formation within Microcosm Dental Plaque.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not the dual constant-depth film fermenter (dCDFF) is able to produce caries-like enamel lesions and to ascertain further information regarding the performance of this fully functional biological caries model. Conditions were defined by the continuation (CF) or cessation (FF) of a saliva-type growth medium supply during 50-mM sucrose exposures (8 times daily). Hydroxyapatite (n = 3) and bovine enamel (n = 3) substrata were included within each condition and samples extracted after 2, 4, 8, and 16 days. Community profiles were generated for

Differences in cortical bone in overloaded and underloaded femurs from ovariectomized rats: comparison of bone morphometry with torsional testing.

Osteopenia and mechanical incompetence are the defining features of osteoporosis, yet the effects of changes in bone structure on mechanical properties are not completely understood. The primary objective of this study was to determine if in a rodent model, changes in cortical bone structure, as measured by static morphometry, would correlate with functional properties, as measured by torsional testing. For this, cortical bone structure and stiffness were determined in overloaded and underloaded limbs in rats rendered ovarian hormone-deficient by ovariectomy (OVX). Rats were OVX and six weeks

[Spontaneous formation of angiogenic woven bone within cancellous bones. Some observations on microfractures of isolated trabecula (author's transl)].

Femoral heads removed for subcapital fracture of the femur were embedded in methacrylate. Contact roentgen films of slabs of 1--2 mm thickness were screened for aggregates of woven bone. A variety of form exceeding that seen by other methods was found, not only in association with isolated trabecula. The distribution was found to confirm earlier findings by Todd et al. (1972), Freeman et al. (1974) and Watson (1975). The aggregates were seen more frequently in porotic areas than in the trajectorial groups of trabecula in the femoral heads. Aggregates of typical shapes were also found in one he

Fluoride concentrations in unerupted fluorotic human enamel.

Unerupted fluorotic human enamel was obtained from teeth surgically removed from patients with dental fluorosis. Fluoride was measured in samples produced by serial acid etching from the surface to the interior of blocks of buccal and lingual enamel. The severity of fluorosis, according to the TF index, was determined from the macroscopic and microradiographic appearance of the specimens. The shape of the fluoride profiles was not affected by the degree of severity of fluorosis, but the fluoride concentrations increased with increasing severity of lesions. Fluoride concentrations were similar

Posteruptive changes in human dental fluorosis--a histological and ultrastructural study.

The aim of the present study was to describe the structural features characterizing the severe grades of human fluorotic enamel (TF scores 5-9) with particular emphasis on the posteruptive changes in severely fluorosed teeth. Dental fluorosis is a subsurface hypomineralized lesion deep to a well-mineralized outer enamel surface, which in severe cases breaks apart shortly after eruption. Early signs of posteruptive changes comprise small defects corresponding to the opening of striae of Retzius. The enamel pits which develop after eruption in more severe cases exhibit an increase in mineral con

Regional accelerated phenomenon in the mandible following mucoperiosteal flap surgery.

Striking remodeling activity occurs adjacent to the site of injury in orthopedic surgery. This reaction has been described as regional accelerated phenomenon (RAP), as it speeds up the healing stage. The phenomenon is a transient burst of localized remodeling process following surgical wounding of cortical bone. We explored whether RAP occurs following mucoperiosteal flap surgery in the jaw bone. Mucoperiosteal flaps were performed on 60 Wistar rats, either only on the buccal aspect or both on buccal and lingual aspects of the mandible. The surgical procedure lasted an average of 30 seconds an

A single-section model for enamel de- and remineralization studies. 1. The effects of different Ca/P ratios in remineralization solutions.

A prerequisite for the accurate measurement of differences between pre- and post-experimental mineral profiles in single sections by quantitative microradiography is a high degree of reproducibility of the analytical procedures. We have determined the reproducibility of both the production and analyses of microradiographs. Lesions were made in seven single bovine enamel sections and radiographed three times. Each microradiograph was then analyzed on three different occasions by use of an image analysis system. This resulted in only small standard deviations in the lesion parameters. The method
