AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To develop new insights into the phenomenon of clinical nurse/midwifery consultant clinical effectiveness in a tertiary referral hospital.
BACKGROUND: International studies identify the pivotal role clinical nurse/midwifery consultants play in patient outcomes. There remains, however, a significant deficit in our knowledge of how these, or other advanced practice nurses and midwives, apply their extensive experience, ontological understandings and tacit knowledge to the enhancement of patient outcomes in complex healthcare environments.
DESIGN: This study was underpinned

Queer, transgender and nonbinary (QTNB) people access midwifery services, yet little is known about their experiences of midwifery care. Our qualitative study used critical narrative inquiry to examine how QTNB midwifery service-users in Ontario, Canada, experience cisheteronormativity in healthcare. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 14 participants, our analysis examines the effects of biomedicalisation on QTNB people who navigate these systems. Our findings show that QTNB people access and participate in technologies of pregnancy surveillance, which deploy information-seeking practices tha

PROBLEM: Due to the varied support available for students, a need was identified to ensure quality and evidence-based supervision on equal terms for clinical studies.
BACKGROUND: Midwifery preceptors are vital to clinical education as they support students in developing practical and professional skills. The Learning in Pairs (LiP model) encourages peer collaboration.
AIM: To describe the experiences of preceptors and students in midwifery education during the implementation and use of the LiP model in delivery wards.
METHODS: Four focus group interviews were conducted with ten midwifery pr

The aim of the study is to create a Polish version of the sexuality attitudes and beliefs survey (SABS), to assess its cultural adaptation and psychometric properties and to utilize it to enable a cross-sectional study of the sexual attitudes and beliefs among Poland's nursing and midwifery students. Non-random network sampling and the adapted SABS v. PL scale were employed for the latter purpose. A total of 570 nursing and midwifery students from two Polish universities completed the questionnaire. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was utilized to measure the internal consistency of the SABS scale

BACKGROUND: Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) families comprise a disproportionately low percentage of home and freestanding birth center births in New Mexico (NM), despite NM Medicaid coverage of care by Licensed Midwives (LMs) in these settings. The purpose of this study was to examine why low income BIPOC seek out LM care, how they benefit from this model of care, and which factors facilitate and obstruct access.
METHODS: We conducted 7 focus groups with 55 low income BIPOC individuals who had birthed in New Mexico in the past 5 years. Participants in four of the groups intend

BACKGROUND: Forcibly displaced women in the Netherlands face increased chances of perinatal mortality and other adverse pregnancy and childbirth outcomes compared to the resident country population, which has been linked to suboptimal care. This study was conducted to gain insights from the experiences of Dutch midwives to inform and enhance the provision of tailored and equitable care for forcibly displaced women.
METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using semistructured interviews with community midwives who provide care for forcibly displaced women (asylum seekers and recognized refug

BACKGROUND: Midwife-led units have been shown to be safer and reduce interventions for women at low risk of complications at birth. In 2017, the first alongside birth center was opened in Spain. The aim of this study was to compare outcomes for women with uncomplicated pregnancies giving birth in the Midwife-led unit (MLU) and in the Obstetric unit (OU) of the same hospital.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study comparing birth outcomes between low-risk women, depending on their planned place of birth. Data were analyzed with an intention-to-treat approach for women that gave birth between Janu

OBJECTIVE: In recent decades, there has been a call to foster effective collaborative models of practice between midwives and obstetricians/gynecologists (OB/GYNs) in the United States in order to improve clinician satisfaction and outcomes for childbearing women. Currently, there is no existing validated scale that measures the collaboration between obstetricians and midwives on labor and birth units. We sought to develop and validate a Midwifery- Obstetrics Collaboration (MOC) Scale that measures obstetricians' attitudes towards collaboration between obstetricians and midwives on labor and b

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: In recent years there has been renewed interest in midwifery-led care for women, with studies reporting similar neonatal outcomes despite lower rates of intervention in midwifery-led birthing centers. Research into obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASI) in these birthing centers is scarce. The objective of this study was to compare the rate of OASI after spontaneous vaginal delivery in nulliparous women in consultant or midwifery-led units over a ten-year period.
METHODS: All spontaneous vaginal deliveries in nulliparous women from 2008 to 2017 were analyzed in

OBJECTIVE: in midwife-led care models of maternity care, midwives are responsible for intrapartum referrals to the obstetrician or obstetric unit, in order to give their clients access to secondary obstetric care. This study explores the influence of risk perception, policy on routine labour management, and other midwife related factors on intrapartum referral decisions of Dutch midwives.
DESIGN: a questionnaire was used, in which a referral decision was asked in 14 early labour scenarios (Discrete Choice Experiment or DCE). The scenarios varied in woman characteristics (BMI, gestational age,

OBJECTIVE: In some economically developed countries, women's choice of birth care and birth place is encouraged. The aim of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of midwives who started working in alongside/free-standing midwifery units (AMU/FMU) and their experiences with labour care in this setting.
METHODS: A qualitative explorative design using a phenomenographic approach was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten strategically sampled midwives working in midwifery units.
RESULTS: The analysis revealed the following five categories of experiences noted

We aimed to gain insight into eight cases of umbilical cord prolapse (UCP) reported by primary care midwives in the Netherlands. Diagnosis-to-delivery interval (DDI) and risk factors were identified. Six cases occurred at home. Risk factors were found in four cases, but only two (unengaged fetal head) were known to the midwife prior to birth. One infant died of severe birth asphyxia; the other infants recovered and were discharged in good condition. The DDI varied from 13 to 72 minutes (median 41 minutes). The shortest DDI was found in the two cases of UCP occurring in hospital and birthing ce

AIM: This paper focuses on implications for nurse managers to support midwives in delivering nursing care to immigrant mothers in some government hospitals in Gauteng, South Africa.
BACKGROUND: Immigration and poverty in Africa has led to midwives providing nursing care to immigrant mothers in a culturally sensitive environment. This necessitates an environment in which nurse managers should support midwives in caring for these mothers as unique individuals.
METHOD: An exploratory, descriptive phenomenological design was followed. The target population included nine immigrant mothers living
