Auricular pseudocysts.

Auricular pseudocysts are uncommon benign lesions of the pinna. The etiology is not well understood but repeated trauma is considered as a possible trigger. Exact diagnosis is important to avoid overtreatment with disfigurement. Various surgical approaches can be used in accordance to the stage of the lesion. Minor invasive procedures provide good results with low recurrence rates.

Imaging of complications of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery.

Iatrogenic complications of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery are relatively uncommon, but contribute to potentially significant patient morbidity and mortality. The incidence of iatrogenic disease reflects the complexity of surgical procedures, including lung resection, esophagectomy, coronary artery bypass grafting, thoracic aorta repair, and cardiac valve replacement. Some iatrogenic complications are minor and common to all procedures, whereas others can be potentially devastating and are associated with precise technical components of specific surgeries. Multimodality imaging plays an i

Complications of iliac crest bone graft harvesting.

Autologous bone grafts harvested from the iliac crest are commonly used in reconstructive orthopaedic surgery. Autologous bone is used to help promote bone healing in fractures and to provide structural support for reconstructive surgery. The results of autologous bone grafting are more predictable than the use of xenografts, cadaveric allografts, or synthetic bone substitutes because autologous bone grafts provide osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties, are not immunogenic, and are usually well incorporated into the graft site. In a retrospective review of 414 consecutive cases of ilia

Perioperative Myomectomy Outcomes Based on the Current Coding Rules: Comparing Leiomyoma Burden and Surgical Approach.

OBJECTIVE: To assess postoperative outcomes based on surgical approach for myomectomies with increasing leiomyoma burden. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database from 2014 to 2019 of benign myomectomy procedures. These cases were categorized into "smaller" and "larger" procedures based on leiomyoma burden. Smaller myomectomies included leiomyomas weighing less than 250 g or with one-four leiomyomas (Current Procedural Terminology [CPT] codes 58545 and 58140); larger myomectomies included leiom

Simple wounds and simple incisions.

Wound healing without complications and with minimal scarring is facilitated in minor surgical procedures by careful attention to basic surgical principles as reviewed in this article. "Langer's lines" represent the natural creases of the skin and are helpful in locating incisions. Whenever possible, incisions should be made in the skin crease, particularly in the neck or across moving parts. Some incisions, such as those required for drainage of pilonidal or perirectal abscesses, must be carefully located with specific reference to underlying structures.

Regrowth of upper eyelid eyelashes after making a surgical incision on the upper eyelid in a case of severe alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata can affect only the scalp (alopecia totalis) or whole body (alopecia universalis). The authors report a case of eyelash regrowth induced by a minor surgical procedure in a 44-year-old Caucasian man with alopecia universalis. The mechanism of the regrowth of eyelashes after a surgical procedure remains unanswered and further studies may help elucidate this phenomenon.

Effectiveness and safety of hFVIII/VWF concentrate (Voncento®) in patients with inherited von Willebrand disease requiring surgical procedures: the OPALE multicentre observational study.

BACKGROUND: In patients with moderate to severe qualitative and quantitative von Willebrand disease (VWD), even minor surgical procedures can be associated with a risk of life-threatening bleeding. Treatment strategies vary according to the levels of von Willebrand factor (VWF) and Factor VIII (FVIII). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and the safety of Voncento® (CSL Behring, Marburg, Germany), a plasma-derived FVIII/VWF concentrate (ratio 1:2.4), during surgeries performed in patients with inherited VWD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The OPALE study, a French multicentre obse

Clinical and histological sequelae of surgical complications in horizontal guided bone regeneration: a systematic review and proposal for management.

It is not uncommon to encounter post-surgical complications after horizontal guided bone regeneration (GBR). The primary aim of this review was to evaluate the incidence and types of complications that occur after horizontal GBR and propose management strategies to deal with these clinical situations. A secondary aim was to conduct a histomorphometric review of the wound healing process at sites that experienced post-surgical complications after GBR. A keyword search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for studies published in English from January 2015 to

Sexual health of LGBTQ+ patients undergoing colorectal surgery for benign disease and their experience with healthcare: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal surgery for benign indications affects patients' sexual health. LGBTQ+ patients often face discrimination, resulting in unmet health needs. We aimed to investigate how colorectal surgery for benign disease affects LGBTQ+ individuals' sexual health, and which barriers exist to access healthcare. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, PsychINFO, Google Scholar, CINHAL, ProQuest, Cochrane library and Joanna Briggs Institute were systematically searched. Screening and data extraction were performed independently by two researchers. Inclusion criteria were adult

Miliary osteoma cutis of the face: treatment with the needle microincision-extirpation method.

Multiple miliary osteoma cutis of the face represents primary extra-skeletal bone formation that arises within the skin of the face. Multiple miliary osteoma cutis of the face is a rare complication of chronic inflammatory acne vulgaris and has invasive and non-invasive treatment alternatives different from acne vulgaris. Invasive techniques should be simple, easy, and inexpensive, with minimal risk of scarring and pigmentation. We used a needle microincision-extirpation technique in a patient with multiple miliary osteoma cutis unresponsive to non-invasive treatment modalities. Skin overlying

Arterial desaturation in healthy children during transfer to the recovery room.

The oxygen saturation in 71 healthy paediatric patients (3.5 months to 16.7 years) was measured by pulse oximetry during transfer from the operating room to the recovery room. These measurements were recorded continuously while the patients breathed room air. Of the patients studied, 28.1 per cent exhibited significant arterial desaturation of less than or equal to 90 per cent. The corresponding PO2 for this saturation level is less than or equal to 58 mmHg. In only 45 per cent of these desaturated patients was the desaturation recognized clinically by the presence of cyanosis. Age, type of an

Percutaneous device occlusion and minimally invasive surgical repair for perimembranous ventricular septal defect.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous device occlusion and minimally invasive surgical repair for perimembranous ventricular septal defect (pmVSD) are two typical methods to reduce the invasiveness of the conventional operation through a median sternotomy. However, few studies have compared them in terms of effectiveness and cost. METHODS: Inpatients with isolated pmVSD who had undergone percutaneous device occlusion or minimally invasive surgical repair from June 2009 to June 2012 were reviewed for a comparative investigation between the two procedures. RESULTS: Procedure success was achieved in 80 perc

Multiple onychocryptosis following treatment of onychomycosis with oral terbinafine.

The authors report an unusual case of multiple onychocryptosis, which developed following treatment of onychomycosis with oral terbinafine. With new growth of the healthy nail plate, the distal aspect of multiple toenails became ingrown with periungual inflammation. This required several minor surgical procedures to alleviate the onychocryptosis. The authors present this case report as a potential complication of oral antifungal therapy.
