Evidence of vector borne transmission of Salmonella enterica enterica serovar Gallinarum and fowl typhoid disease mediated by the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer, 1778).

BACKGROUND: The poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer, 1778) is a major ectoparasite of poultry. Infestations are found in most laying hen farms in Europe, and breeder flocks have also been reported to be affected. Mite infestation has detrimental effects on animal welfare, it causes significant economic losses, and, additionally, D. gallinae is often considered as a vector for pathogens. Despite suspicion of a close relationship between the poultry red mite and Salmonella enterica enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Gallinarum (serovar Gallinarum), the causative agent of fowl typhoid

Ectoparasites of ring-necked pheasants in Nebraska.

In 1971, 1983 and 1984, ectoparasites were identified on 61 ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) from Nebraska. Birds were collected throughout the state from 11 of 93 counties. Four species of chewing lice (Mallophaga) were collected: Lipeurus maculosus, Goniodes colchici, Lagopoecus colchicus and Amyrsidea megalosoma. One species of analgid mite, Megninia sp. was collected. Apparently, this species is new and undescribed. The four mallophagan species have not been reported from Nebraska.

A rapid survey technique for Tropilaelaps mite (Mesostigmata: Laelapidae) detection.

Parasitic Tropilaelaps (Delfinado and Baker) mites are a damaging pest of European honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) in Asia. These mites represent a significant threat if introduced to other regions of the world, warranting implementation of Tropilaelaps mite surveillance in uninfested regions. Current Tropilaelaps mite-detection methods are unsuitable for efficient large scale screening. We developed and tested a new bump technique that consists of firmly rapping a honey bee brood frame over a collecting pan. Our method was easier to implement than current detection tests, reduced time spent in

[Chronic blepharitis and Demodex].

PURPOSE: Demodex is a mite commonly found in eyelash hair follicles and sebaceous glands of healthy people. Due to the fact this mite has also been reported in many chronic cases of blepharitis, we aimed to investigate the incidence of infestation with this mite in healthy people and in patients with chronic blepharitis, in addition to evaluating the response to the different treatments used for blepharitis. METHODS: 105 subjects without blepharitis were selected as a control group and 20 subjects diagnosed as having chronic blepharitis were selected as patients. Epilated eyelashes were obser

Hypopi (Acari: Hypoderatidae) from subcutaneous tissues of the African spoonbill (Aves: Ciconiiformes: Threskiornithidae).

Two new species and a new host record for two additional species of deutonymphs of the family Hypoderatidae are described from subcutaneous adipose tissues of a captive African spoonbill, Platalea alba Scopali. Phalacrodectes (Phalacrodectes) platalea Pence & Duncan, n. sp. most closely resembles P. (P.) whartoni Fain and P. (P.) pelecani Pence & Courtney in chaetotaxy and cuticular sclerotization, but it differs by having secondary perigenital sclerotization surrounding the genital openings and parallel genital papillae. P. (P.) schoutedeni Fain is reexamined for the first time since its orig

Expression and characterisation of a Sarcoptes scabiei protein tyrosine kinase as a potential antigen for scabies diagnosis.

Scabies is a disease that harms humans and other animals that is caused by the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei burrowing into the stratum corneum of the skin. In the early stages of scabies, symptoms are often subclinical and there are no effective diagnostic methods. Herein, we cloned, expressed and characterised an S. scabiei protein tyrosine kinase (SsPTK) and evaluated its diagnostic value as a recombinant antigen in rabbit during the early stages of Sarcoptes infestation. The SsPTK protein is ~30 kDa, lacks a signal peptide, and shares high homology with a PTK from the rabbit ear mite Psoropt

Refining the Diagnostic Technique to Determine Prevalence of Demodex Mites in Eyelash Hair Follicles Within Standard Ophthalmic Practice: A Single-Center Outpatient Clinical Study.

PURPOSE: A high density of Demodex infestation in human eyelids and eyelash follicles has been implicated in a variety of ocular surface conditions. However, Demodex infestation often goes undiagnosed and untreated, due to an overlap in signs and symptoms with other sources of ocular surface inflammation. We sought to refine the diagnostic technique for outpatient assessment for Demodex infestation and determine prevalence of Demodex mites in the hair follicles of eyelashes from patients in a standard ophthalmic practice. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients recruited from a single outpatient ophth

Ivermectin: its effect on the immune system of rabbits and rats infested with ectoparasites.

The influence of subcutaneously administered ivermectin on the specific immune response was studied in rabbits infested with mites (Psoroptes cuniculi) and in rats infested with lice (Polyplax spinulosa). A pronounced specific antibody activity and a change in immunoblotting pattern was observed in rabbits after the ivermectin treatment. However, in rats the antibody activity decreased and the profile of specific antibodies, tested by immunoblotting, remained the same as before the treatment. The specific immune response in rabbits artificially immunized with whole-body Psoroptes cuniculi extr

On-host ecology and off-host survival of the sheep scab mite Psoroptes ovis.

These studies were conducted to investigate the possible role of certain aspects of the on-host ecology and off-host survival of the sheep scab mite, Psoroptes ovis, in the dissemination of infestation. All developmental stages of the mite occurred in the fleece both proximally or distal to the skin of infested Merino and Dorper sheep. A larger proportion of mites was present in the fleece of Dorper sheep distal to the skin in the late afternoon and early morning than at other times during the day. Immature and adult mites readily transferred to tufts of wool or hair placed on infested sheep o

[Domestic ectoparasitoses, a review].

Human parasitic infestations of the skin by mites (Acari) and insects can be divided into permanent and temporary ectoparasitoses. This fact is important for diagnosis and treatment. Permanent ectoparasites are highly adapted to their host, the human being, and live in permanent contact with him. Diagnosis is usually simple and the parasite can be found on the patient. Treatment is by antiparasitic topical medication. In contrast to permanent ectoparasitosis, temporary ectoparasites are not found on the patient. When a bite reaction is perceptible the insect has left its host. The history of t

Saving a species, one mite at a time: efficacy of afoxolaner (NexGard®) against Macronyssidae mites in the critically endangered Aeolian wall lizard (Podarcis raffonei).

The Aeolian wall lizard (Podarcis raffonei) is an endangered lacertid species endemic to the Aeolian Archipelago (Sicily, Italy). Its populations are threatened by several factors, including habitat fragmentation and reduction, competition with the invasive Podarcis siculus, and potential health risks associated with disease dynamics. To prevent the extinction of this unique species an ex-situ captive breeding program was established in the Reptile House at the Bioparco of Rome within the LIFE project EOLIZARD. Most animals were housed in outdoor enclosures, favoring the exposure of these naïv

Demodex: The worst enemies are the ones that used to be friends.

Demodex mites are common ectoparasites of the human pilosebaceous units. Most adults are infested with Demodex mites without clinical symptoms. Demodex mite will only become a pathogenic organism when there is an abnormal increase in the number of Demodex mite density. This situation happens when the equilibrium between Demodex mites, skin microenvironment and human immunity system changes. Demodex infestation can cause multiple skin disorders, which are grouped under the term demodicosis or demodicidosis. Clinical manifestations of demodicosis can mimic other known skin diseases such as folli

Chiggers.

Chigger infestations are caused by mite larvae that feed on the host's epidermal cells. The combination of digestive enzymes secreted by the mite and the immune response of the host produces the typical "chigger bite." Intense pruritus is the usual response, but more severe reactions and chigger-borne disease may also occur. Treatment is primarily symptomatic and consists of antipruritics, antihistamines and steroids. Chigger infestation may be minimized by the use of proper clothing and insect repellents.
