Individual and Combined Associations of Cognitive and Mobility Limitations on Mortality Risk in Older Adults.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential independent and combined associations of cognitive and mobility limitations on risk of all-cause mortality in a representative sample of the US older adult population who, at baseline, were free of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from the 1999 to 2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used to identify 1852 adults (age, 60-85 years) with and without mobility and/or cognitive limitations. Hazard ratios (HRs) for mortality risk were calculated for 4 mutually exclusive groups: no limitation (group 1 as

Fatigue and pain limit independent mobility and physiotherapy after hip fracture surgery.

PURPOSE: The patient's ability to complete their planned physiotherapy session after hip fracture surgery has been proposed as an independent predictor for achieving basic mobility independency upon hospital discharge. However, knowledge of factors limiting mobility is sparse. We therefore examined patient reported factors limiting ability to complete planned physiotherapy sessions as well as limitations for not achieving independency in basic mobility early after hip fracture surgery. METHODS: A total of 204 consecutive patients with a hip fracture (mean (SD) age of 80 (9.9) years, 47 patien

The multidomain mobility lab in older persons: from bench to bedside. The assessment of body composition in older persons at risk of mobility limitations.

With body composition it is possible to divide human body in compartments on the basis of different physical properties. The two level body composition model subdividing the whole body in fat mass and fat free mass is the most used in epidemiological and clinical studies in the elderly. Body composition techniques may be used to study ageing process. Changes in body composition occur as part of the normal ageing process and are associated with important effects on health and function. It has been shown that body composition changes with aging, with an increase in fat mass and a decrease in mus

Foreign allometric exponents adequately normalize isokinetic knee extension strength to identify muscle weakness and mobility limitation in Portuguese older adults: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying muscle weakness is challenging, because the reduction of strength with aging does not depend only on sarcopenia, but also on sensorimotor deficits. Nevertheless, this identification is improved by adjusting muscle strength allometrically, by removing the influence of body size. However, the effectiveness of foreign models to normalize these (dys)functionalities is not yet tested. This study aimed to compare and apply foreign allometric exponents for normalizing isokinetic knee extension strength in Portuguese older adults to identify muscle weakness/mobility limitation.

Ratings of Perceived Exertion During Walking: Predicting Major Mobility Disability and Effect of Structured Physical Activity in Mobility-Limited Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the association between ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) of walking and major mobility disability (MMD), as well as their transitions in response to a physical activity (PA) compared to a health education (HE) program. METHODS: Older adults (n = 1633) who were at risk for mobility impairment were randomized to structured PA or HE programs. During a 400 m walk, participants rated exertion as "light" or "hard." An MMD event was defined as the inability to walk 400 m. MMD events and RPE values were assessed every 6 months for an average of 2.6 years. RESULTS:

Association between hip abductor muscle strength and mobility limitation (locally defined as locomotive syndrome) in community-dwelling adults undergoing osteoporosis screening: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Mobility limitation is associated with an increased risk of disability in older adults. In Japan, mobility limitation is commonly assessed using the concept of locomotive syndrome. Hip abductor muscle strength plays a key role in gait stability; however, its independent association with mobility limitation remains unclear, partly because previous studies have focused primarily on general muscle strength or muscle mass rather than frontal-plane hip stability. This study aimed to investigate the association between hip abductor muscle strength and mobility limitation in community-dwe

A Limited Role for AMD3100 Induced Stem Cell Mobilization for Modulation of Thoracic Trauma Outcome.

Thoracic trauma is a major cause of mortality due to the associated inflammatory acute respiratory distress syndrome and morbidity due to impaired tissue regeneration. Trauma-induced lung inflammation is characterized by the early recruitment of cells with pro- or anti-inflammatory activity to the lung. Therapeutic interventions reducing the level of tissue inflammation may result in decreased tissue damage and improved healing and recovery. Stem cells might be able to improve trauma outcome via immunomodulation or by enhancing tissue regeneration. Here, we describe the migratory dynamics of mu

Informal caregiver training to address functional mobility limitations of stroke survivors: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Informal caregivers of stroke survivors often report the need for training on how to care for a loved one with functional mobility limitations. Evidence on training interventions to help informal caregivers with issues related to mobility is varied. The objective of this scoping review was to examine the literature including skill-based training interventions that educate caregivers on functional mobility for stroke survivors. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We extracted studies from OVID Medline, Cochrane, ISI Web of Knowledge, and Embase published between 1990 and 20

Health status and mobility limitations are associated with residential and employment status in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BP) are linked to multiple impairments in everyday functioning which share cognitive and symptom risk factors. Other risk factors for critical aspects of every day functioning (e.g., gainful employment; residential independence) such as physical health have not been evaluated, despite poor health in SCZ and BP. METHODS: We analyzed 20-year follow-up data from the Suffolk County Mental Health Project cohort of consecutive first admissions with a psychotic disorder to 12 psychiatric facilities in Suffolk County, NY, between September 1989

Estimating the Co-Development of Cognitive Decline and Physical Mobility Limitations in Older U.S. Adults.

This study examines the co-development of cognitive and physical function in older Americans using an age-heterogeneous sample drawn from the Health and Retirement Study (1998-2008). We used multiple-group parallel process latent growth models to estimate the association between trajectories of cognitive function as measured by immediate word recall scores, and limitations in physical function as measured as an index of functional mobility limitations. Nested model fit testing was used to assess model fit for the separate trajectories followed by estimation of an unconditional parallel process
