Gold weight implantation is generally considered a safe procedure for the treatment of paralytic lagophthalmos. The most frequently seen complications are extrusion, malpositioning, and migration of the implant. To decrease the rate of these complications, several modifications were defined in the composition and the shape of the implant as well as the surgical technique itself. Despite these precautions, implant revision rates are still as high as 8% to 14%. Nowadays, implant-covering or implant-wrapping procedures are becoming more popular to avoid implant-related problems. However, there is

We gave general anesthesia for an infant with ilioinguinal hernia and Möbius syndrome. Anesthesia was performed with sevoflurane inhalation and intravenous infusion of remifentanil. Intraoperative anesthetic course was uneventful. Möbius syndrome is a syndrome of rhombencephalic maldevelopment involving predominantly motor nuclei and axons, as well as traversing long tracts. Airway management is a great challenge in these patients. Micrognathia, retrognathia, mandibular hypoplasia, and palatine cleft are some of the manifestations seen in these patients.

BACKGROUND: Möbius syndrome is a disorder characterized by developmental impairment of cranial nerve VII, VI, often XII, and other cranial nerves. Facial reanimation in such patients restores the ability of some motion and of limited emotional expression. In one-fourth of these patients, hypoglossal involvement results in severe speech impairment due to tongue atrophy and lack of voluntary mobility. Bilabial incompetence due to facial paralysis further deteriorates speech capability. Direct tongue neurotization has been used by the senior author (J.K.T) to improve tongue function and speech in

The Carey-Finema-Ziter syndrome (CFZS, MIM 254940) is an apparently autosomal recessively inherited disorder consisting of the combination of non-progressive congenital myopathy with Moebius and Pierre Robin sequence, facial anomalies and growth delay. Mental development has been described as normal or delayed. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is the immobility of the joint caused by ankylotic fusion of the mandible to the cranial base or zygoma. It is a serious and disabling condition that may cause problems in mastication, digestion, speech, appearance, and oral hygiene. Most often is

BACKGROUND: The primary site of pathology in Moebius syndrome is still unknown, although several studies have variably localized the lesion in the extraocular muscles, cranial nerves, or central nervous system.
CASE: A 24-year-old man with Poland-Moebius syndrome and acquired progressive bilateral paralytic lower eyelid ectropion is described.
OBSERVATIONS: In this patient, magnetic resonance imaging studies revealed a barely detectable pontine hypoplasia and normal recti muscles. Nerve conduction studies of the facial nerves showed a severe demyelinating or dysmyelinating type of neuropathy

BACKGROUND: Airway management in patients with Moebius syndrome can be difficult due to the presence of orofacial malformations. This paper aims to present our institution's experience in the evaluation and management of the upper airway in patients with Moebius syndrome METHODOLOGY:: The authors performed a retrospective study including every patient with Moebius syndrome submitted to surgery between 2012 and 2017. Difficult airway was defined as one requiring more than 2 attempts to achieve endotracheal tube placement, a Mallampati score equal or above III, a Cormack score equal or above III

PURPOSE: Moebius Syndrome is a rare congenital neurological condition often characterized by multiple cranial nerve involvement. This case study presents an eight-year old girl with Moebius Syndrome (MC) who received 30 sessions of speech therapy. This occurred after presenting to clinic 11 months after left facial reanimation with gracilis thigh muscle transfer surgery. On examination, only flickers of left facial movement were observed. There was no movement on the right side of the face. As a consequence of the minimal movement, MC presented with drooling and unintelligible speech. The purp

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the variable clinical picture of Möbius syndrome (MIM no. 157900) and to further understand the pathogenesis of the disorder.
METHODS: A standardized questionnaire was submitted to 37 Dutch patients with Möbius syndrome. All underwent standardized neurologic examination with special attention to cranial nerve functions, motor skills, and facial and limb anomalies.
RESULTS: Of 37 patients with facial paresis, 97% had bilateral and 3% had unilateral ocular abduction weakness. Further analysis showed isolated abducens nerve palsy in 9%, a conjugated horizontal gaze par

BACKGROUND: A heterozygous c.1228G > A p.E410K mutation in TUBB3 encoding neuronal-specific β-tubulin isotype 3 causes TUBB3 E410K syndrome, which exhibits a wide range of neurological and endocrinological abnormalities.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient is a 31-year-old Japanese woman who was diagnosed with atypical Moebius syndrome because of congenital facial weakness and extraocular ophthalmoplegia sparing abduction. She suffered a femoral neck fracture at 23 years of age, and radiological and endocrinological studies revealed osteoporosis because of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. She also ha

Moebius syndrome (MBS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by rhombencephalic mal development, mainly presenting with facial palsy with limited gaze abduction. Most cases are sporadic, possibly caused by a combination of environmental and genetic factors; however, no proven specific associations have been yet established. Hereditary congenital facial palsy (HCFP) is an autosomal dominant congenital dysinnervation syndrome, recognizable by the isolated dysfunction of the seventh cranial nerve. Mutant mice for Hoxb1 were reported to present with facial weakness, resembling MBS. Recently

The oromandibular limb hypogenesis syndromes (OLHS) represent a group of rare conditions characterized by congenital malformations involving the tongue, mandible, and limbs. There is considerable overlap between the syndromes gathered under the term OLHS, and a marked variability of face and limb anomalies as well as additional malformations. In this report we describe a girl with gastroschisis and pulmonary hypoplasia in addition to features of Moebius syndrome comprising hypoplasia of the tongue and mandible, brachydactyly of halluces, cranial nerve palsies with bilateral facial paralysis an

A woman presented at 33 weeks gestation with reduced fetal movements and a nonreactive nonstress test. Fetal ultrasound examination revealed a peculiar unilateral arm tremor. At emergency cesarean section, performed for fetal indications, a 1,672-gm male infant was delivered requiring intubation for feeble respiratory effort. After delivery the neonate was transiently hypertonic and later hypotonic. Continuing ventilatory support at minimal settings was necessary. The work-up for aneuploidy, metabolic disorders, and infection was negative. The infant died after being removed from ventilatory s

Moebius sequence is a rare congenital disorder usually defined as a combination of facial weakness with impairment of ocular abduction. It is questionable, whether there is a strong association of the sequence with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) as suggested in some earlier case reports and studies. Twenty-two participants with Möbius sequence aged 6-16 years followed a request of the German Moebius foundation to participate in a nationwide study. All patients had a physical examination and intelligence testing. Primary caregivers were asked to complete two screening measures of ASD (Behavio

PURPOSE: Congenital aberrant tearing is characterized by tearing when eating ("crocodile tears"), lack of emotional tearing, or both. Most reported cases are associated with Duane syndrome. In our previous studies we observed aberrant tearing in individuals with thalidomide embryopathy and Möbius sequence. This report summarizes the literature on the subject and adds 3 new studies that give information on this unusual condition.
METHODS: Twenty-eight individuals with Möbius sequence were interviewed about tearing symptoms at a support group meeting in Italy. In Sweden 30 adults primarily from

OBJECTIVE: To perform a preliminary test of a new rehabilitation treatment (FIT-SAT), based on mirror mechanisms, for gracile muscles after smile surgery.
METHOD: A pre- and postsurgery longitudinal design was adopted to study the efficacy of FIT-SAT. Four patients with bilateral facial nerve paralysis (Moebius syndrome) were included. They underwent two surgeries with free muscle transfers, one year apart from each other. The side of the face first operated on was rehabilitated with the traditional treatment, while the second side was rehabilitated with FIT-SAT. The FIT-SAT treatment include

The aim of this study was to present the functional results of treatment of neglected clubfoot in children with Moebius syndrome. A prospective analysis of seven patients with Moebius syndrome who had corrective surgery for clubfoot deformity was performed. Functional result using a modified American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) questionnaire at an average follow-up of 58 months was analysed. Five children were able to have their foot flat on the ground. Additional corrective surgery was required in eight feet. Our experience of treating neglected clubfoot deformity in children w

INTRODUCTION: Möbius syndrome typically presents as a sporadic trait with congenital facial palsy and abduction impairment. We used high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and genetic analysis to examine a family with features of Möbius syndrome.
METHODS: We examined 3 related family members having congenital complete opthalmoplegia with ptosis and facial diplegia. Orbits were imaged in quasi-coronal and sagittal planes of 2 mm thickness. Subarachnoid cranial nerves were imaged in planes of 1 mm thickness. Linkage and mutation analysis were performed to determine whether the pedigree
