Evaluating Elastic-Plastic Wavy and Spherical Asperity-Based Statistical and Multi-Scale Rough Surface Contact Models with Deterministic Results.

The solution to an elastic-plastic rough surface contact problem can be applied to phenomena such as friction and contact resistance. Many different types of models have therefore been developed to solve rough surface contact. A deterministic approach may accurately describe the entire surface, but the computing time is too long for practical use. Thus, mathematically abbreviated models have been developed to describe rough surface contact. Many popular models employ a statistical methodology to solve the contact problem, and they borrow the solution for spherical or parabolic contact to repre

On the fit of statistical and the k-C* models to projecting treatment performance in a constructed wetland system.

The objective of this study was to assess the suitability of statistical and the k-C* models to projecting treatment performance of constructed wetlands by applying the models to predict the final effluent concentrations of a pilot field-scale constructed wetlands system (CWs) treating animal farm wastewater. The CWs achieved removal rates (in g/m(2).d) ranging from 7.1-149.8 for BOD(5), 49.8-253.8 for COD and 7.1-47.0 for NH(4)-N. Generally, it was found that the statistical models developed from multiple regression analyses (MRA) were stronger in predicting final effluent concentrations than

Two-part Statistical Model for Identifying Baseline Predictors of Chronic Postsurgical Pain.

BACKGROUND: A substantial proportion of patients report no pain after surgery, resulting in an excess of zero values that pose challenges for analysis using traditional statistical models. The current study was designed to test the hypothesis that a two-part model, commonly used in healthcare expenditures research, would demonstrate superior performance in predicting postsurgical pain when compared with traditional models and would secondarily better identify predictors of this clinically important outcome. METHODS: This study analyzed a prospectively collected single-center data set (n = 3,9

A statistical review of polygenic risk scores: from heuristics to model-based inference.

Polygenic risk scores (PRS) were initially developed as pragmatic tools to aggregate genome-wide association study (GWAS) signals for individual-level prediction, relying on heuristic strategies such as clumping and thresholding to approximate independence among variants. Although computationally efficient and widely accessible, these early approaches were sensitive to tuning parameters and limited in their ability to capture the diffuse signal characteristic of highly polygenic traits. As GWAS sample sizes expanded and biobank-scale resources emerged, methodological priorities shifted toward

Modelling of Rheological Properties of Pharmaceutical Powder Mixtures for Direct Compression: A Statistical Approach.

The rheological properties of pharmaceutical mixtures are exceedingly difficult to understand and control. Despite their impact on final product quality, no generally valid approach to define and predict mixture rheology has been discovered so far. The cause is a complexity of factors affecting the particulate mixture behaviour. This study aimed at addressing part of this problem by suggesting an approach to evaluate and subsequently predict flow properties of binary particulate mixtures from parameters of individual components to better guide the formulation development. This study investigat

Combining statistical and dynamical modelling to guide the design of cluster randomised trials for malaria.

Cluster randomised trials (CRTs) remain key for evaluating the community-wide impact of interventions against infectious diseases such as malaria. Randomising by cluster prevents contamination and enables both the direct and indirect effects of the intervention to be estimated. Although these trials are extremely informative, they can be logistically demanding and costly to carry out, which means it is important that these trials are well powered. Here, we present a framework for planning CRTs that measure malaria prevalence as the outcome using an established mathematical model of malaria tra

ViVo: A Temporal Modeling Framework That Boosts Statistical Power and Minimizes Animal Usage.

Preclinical tumor studies are often limited by high variability and small-sample sizes, reducing statistical power, and masking treatment effects. We present an exponential framework that estimates tumor growth rates (r) independently of initial burden and introduces Tumor Growth Rate (TGR) matrices to map treatment effects across time windows. Applied to a public xenograft data set and four additional mouse models, exponential fits achieved high agreement with raw data (median R2 = 0.937). When resampling matched group sizes (n = 3-7), our approach consistently outperformed conventional end p

An Improved Statistical Modeling Approach to Individual Anticholinergic Drug Use Trend Analysis.

Anticholinergic (AC) drugs are commonly prescribed to older adults for treating diseases and chronic conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, urinary incontinence, gastrointestinal disorder, or simply pain and allergy. The high prevalence of AC drug use can have a detrimental effect on the mental health of older adults. We aim to improve the prediction of future trends of AC drug use at the individual level, with pharmacy refill data. The individual drug use data presents challenges in the modeling, such as data being discrete-valued with excess zeros and having significant u

Statistical methods for the computation and parameter estimation of a fractional SIRC model with Salmonella infection.

This study analyzes the fractional order SIRC epidemic model under stochastic fractional differential equations in the Caputo sense. This article describes Salmonella infection in animal herds. For the deterministic system, we explain solution positivity and boundness. We also prove that the fractional stochastic solution exists and is unique. Other criteria considered include non-negativity of solutions, local and global stability analyses, Hyers-Ulam stability analysis, and sensitivity analysis for the deterministic system. Furthermore, according to the truncated Ito-Taylor expansion, we app

Modeling Lower-Order Statistics to Enable Decoy-Free FDR Estimation in Proteomics.

One of the chief objectives in mass spectrometry-based peptide identification in proteomics is the statistical validation of top-scoring peptide-spectrum matches (PSMs) in the form of false discovery rate (FDR) estimation. Existing methods construct a null model that captures the characteristics of incorrect target PSMs to estimate the FDR, most often with the help of decoys. Decoy-based methods, however, increase the computational cost and rely on the difficult-to-verify assumption that decoy PSMs constitute a sufficient and representative sample of the population of possible incorrect target

Anatomical variation in humeri: gender and side comparison using statistical shape modelling.

PURPOSE: The surgical management of proximal humeral fractures remains challenging. Anatomical reduction of the fracture has been reported as the keystone for a sufficient surgical fixation and successful outcome. However, mostly there is no example of its premorbid state. Literature suggests that the mirrored contralateral side can be used as a reconstruction template. But is this a correct technique to use? The purpose of this study is to define anatomical variation between humeri based on gender and side comparison. METHODS: Two different statistical shape models of the humerus were create

Constitutive Damage Model of Foamed Lightweight Concrete Using Statistical Damage Theory.

Foamed lightweight concrete has been applied in different fields of civil engineering because of its superior properties, but the related research considering internal pore damage is limited. Based on statistical damage theory and considering the uneven distribution of fracture damage and strength between the pores of light concrete, a damage constitutive model of foamed lightweight concrete was established based on the Weibull function. The parameters of the damage model were determined through a triaxial compression test, and the rationality was verified by combining the existing test data.

Enhanced head-skull shape learning using statistical modeling and topological features.

Skull prediction from the head is a challenging issue toward a cost-effective therapeutic solution for facial disorders. This issue was initially studied in our previous work using full head-to-skull relationship learning. However, the head-skull thickness topology is locally shaped, especially in the face region. Thus, the objective of the present study was to enhance our head-to-skull prediction problem by using local topological features for training and predicting. Head and skull feature points were sampled on 329 head and skull models from computed tomography (CT) images. These feature po

eSMC: a statistical model to infer admixture events from individual genomics data.

BACKGROUND: Inferring historical population admixture events yield essential insights in understanding a species demographic history. Methods are available to infer admixture events in demographic history with extant genetic data from multiple sources. Due to the deficiency in ancient population genetic data, there lacks a method for admixture inference from a single source. Pairwise Sequentially Markovian Coalescent (PSMC) estimates the historical effective population size from lineage genomes of a single individual, based on the distribution of the most recent common ancestor between the dip

Principal polynomial shape analysis: A non-linear tool for statistical shape modeling.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The most widespread statistical modeling technique is based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Although this approach has several appealing features, it remains hampered by its linearity. Principal Polynomial Analysis (PPA) can capture non-linearity in a sequential algorithm, while maintaining the interesting properties of PCA. PPA is, however, computationally expensive in handling shape surface data. To this end, we propose Principal Polynomial Shape Analysis (PPSA) as an adjusted approach for non-linear shape analyzes. The aim of this study was to assess PPSA's

Application of statistical shape modeling to the human hip joint: a scoping review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: This review aims to identify all examples of the application of statistical shape models to the human hip joint, with a focus on methodology, validation, and applications. INTRODUCTION: Abnormal hip joint morphology (eg, deformity secondary to Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease) is an important precursor to osteoarthritis. Clinical radiographs are often used to characterize deformity and provide indication for surgical correction, but it is unclear whether radiographs can adequately describe three-dimensional deformity. Statistical shape modeling, a method of describing a population of sha

Statistical modeling of cargo tank truck crashes: Rollover and release of hazardous materials.

INTRODUCTION: Cargo Tank Trucks (CTTs) are a primary surface transportation carrier of hazardous materials (hazmat) in the United States and CTT rollover crashes are the leading cause of injuries and fatalities from hazmat transportation incidents. CTTs are susceptible to rollover crashes because of their size, distribution of weight, a higher center of gravity, and the surging and sloshing of liquid cargo during transportation. This study identified and quantified the effects of various factors on the probability of rollover and release of hazmat in traffic crashes where a CTT was involved.

Statistical Shape Modeling to Determine the Anterior Pelvic Plane for Total Hip Arthroplasty.

The anterior pelvic plane (APP) defined by both iliac spines and the pubic symphysis, is essential in total hip arthroplasty (THA) for the orientation of the prosthetic cup. However, the APP is nowadays still difficult to determine in computer assisted orthopedic surgery (CAOS). We propose to use a statistical shape model (SSM) of the pelvis to estimate the APP from ipsilateral anatomical landmarks, more easily accessible during surgery in computer assisted THA with the patient in lateral decubitus position. A SSM of the pelvis has been built from 40 male pelvises. Various ipsilateral anatomic

Segmentation of abdominal organs in computed tomography using a generalized statistical shape model.

Segmentation of anatomical structures in computed tomography images remains an important stage in computer-aided diagnostics and therapy. Due to the complexity of anatomical structures in the abdominal cavity, the occurrence of anatomical variants and pathological changes of organs in computed tomography images, segmentation is still treated as a current research problem. The paper presents the segmentation method based on the generalized statistical shape model. The method was tested in the application to segmentation based on 40 cases of computed tomography with contrast: 20 cases were inclu
