Effects of fusarium moniliforme isolates on tissue and serum sphingolipid concentrations in horses.

Disruption in sphingolipid (SL) metabolism is a biomarker of exposure to fumonisins. The role of altered SL metabolism in the pathogenesis of fumonisin toxicoses is not understood. A 27-d feeding trial in horses compared the toxic effects of 3 strains of Fusarium moniliforme: RRC 415, cultured from corn in MS; AU 2/3, cultured from feed associated with clinical signs of duodenitis-proximal jejunitis (DPJ) in horses in AL; and MRC 826, cultured from corn in South Africa and shown to cause equine leukoencephalomalacia (ELEM). These were cultured on corn and diluted with clean corn and grain mixe

Manganese Deficiency Is Required for High Itaconic Acid Production From D-Xylose in Aspergillus terreus.

Itaconic acid is used as a bio-based, renewable building block in the polymer industry. It is produced by submerged fermentations of the filamentous fungus Aspergillus terreus from molasses or starch, but research over the efficient utilization of non-food, lignocellulosic plant biomass is soaring. The objective of this study was to test whether the application of two key cultivation parameters for obtaining itaconic acid from D-glucose in high yields - Mn2+ ion deficiency and high concentration of the carbon source - would also occur on D-xylose, the principal monomer of lignocellulose. To th

Hexavalent chromium reduction by Cellulomonas sp. strain ES6: the influence of carbon source, iron minerals, and electron shuttling compounds.

The reduction of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), to trivalent chromium, Cr(III), can be an important aspect of remediation processes at contaminated sites. Cellulomonas species are found at several Cr(VI) contaminated and uncontaminated locations at the Department of Energy site in Hanford, Washington. Members of this genus have demonstrated the ability to effectively reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) fermentatively and therefore play a potential role in Cr(VI) remediation at this site. Batch studies were conducted with Cellulomonas sp. strain ES6 to assess the influence of various carbon sources, iron mi

The effects of forage provision and group size on the behavior of calves.

The effects of providing alternative forages to individual or group-reared calves on their behavior were examined in 2 experiments. In experiment 1, 24 calves were reared in groups of 3 or individually in straw-bedded pens from age 1 to 7 wk. One-half of the calves in each treatment were provided with ad libitum cut perennial ryegrass herbage. Grass intakes and time spent eating grass were greater for grouped calves than for individual calves. Providing grass reduced concentrate intake of grouped calves and reduced the time that all calves, but particularly individual calves, spent eating stra

Consumption and effectiveness of anthelmintic-medicated block supplements for the treatment of trichostrongyle nematodes in a northern Great Plains Bison Herd.

In high numbers, trichostrongyle nematodes decrease productivity and cause health problems in ruminants including North American bison (Bison bison). Treatment strategies used to limit their impact in cattle are also being used by bison producers, including free-choice group-treatments either as the sole option or in combination with squeeze chute treatments. There have been no published studies evaluating the efficacy of free-choice anthelmintic strategies for bison under pasture conditions, and so the present study evaluated the effectiveness of fenbendazole-medicated multinutrient blocks us

Evaluating Co-Ensiling Strategies to Valorise Duckweed as a Sustainable Feed Ingredient.

Duckweed (Lemnaceae) is a promising alternative feed crop, particularly in regions with nutrient surpluses and protein deficits, as it grows efficiently on nutrient-rich agricultural wastewater and provides protein-rich biomass. However, its high moisture content and rapid post-harvest spoilage pose major storage challenges. This study evaluated (co-)ensiling as a cost-effective preservation strategy for duckweed. Three separate experiments were conducted to assess the ensilability of duckweed alone and in combination with various agricultural co-substrates and additives, including corn silage

Emulsified polycolloid substrate biobarrier for benzene and petroleum-hydrocarbon plume containment and migration control - A field-scale study.

The objective of this field-scale study was to assess the effectiveness of applying an emulsified polycolloid substrate (EPS; containing cane molasses, soybean oil, and surfactants) biobarrier in the control and remediation of a petroleum-hydrocarbon plume in natural waters. An abandoned petrochemical manufacturing facility site was contaminated by benzene and other petroleum products due to a leakage from a storage tank. Because benzene is a petroleum hydrocarbon with a high migration ability, it was used as the target compound in the field-scale study. Batch partition and sorption experiment

Resources time footprint indicator extension for evaluating human interventions in provisioning ecosystem services supply.

The growing emphasis on ecosystem services (ES) has enhanced evaluation of their capacity. However, intensive human intervention in the provisioning ecosystem service (P-ES) supply driven by widening spatial gaps between supply sources and demand locations, compromises the long-term ES supply potential. The Resources Time Footprint (RTF) indicator provides numerical insights into these impacts in the form of occupancy rates by comparing resource utilization to allocated capacities over a person's lifespan. Nonetheless, its applicability to major P-ES is currently restricted due to the lack of

Aryepiglottic fold augmentation as treatment for late-onset dysphagia following surgical treatment of recurrent laryngeal neuropathy.

OBJECTIVE: Coughing and dysphagia have been described following prosthetic laryngoplasty (LP) with or without ventriculectomy/ventriculocordectomy (VE/VCE) for the treatment of recurrent laryngeal neuropathy. All previous case descriptions include patients with acute onset of clinical signs after surgery that persisted. The authors observed a late-onset of dysphagia and coughing months to years after LP ± VE/VCE. The condition was always associated with an abnormality of the aryepiglottic fold (AEF). Treatment options for those patients are limited. We suggest augmentation of the AEF as treatm

Redox-based dual-substrate fermentation enhances sustainable production of 3-hydroxypropionic acid by recombinant E. coli.

3-Hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP) is an important platform chemical for a circular bioeconomy since it is a precursor for the production of several high-value derivatives such as acrylic acid as well as biodegradable plastics. Escherichia coli is a promising host for 3-HP biosynthesis due to its well-characterized metabolic network and ease of genetic manipulation. In E. coli, 3-HP is produced from glycerol via a two-step pathway involving glycerol dehydratase and an NAD⁺-dependent aldehyde dehydrogenase. However, a major limitation in this process is redox imbalance, as both glycerol catabolism

Bacterial Nanocellulose/Copper as a Robust Laccase-Mimicking Bionanozyme for Catalytic Oxidation of Phenolic Pollutants.

Industrial effluents containing phenolic compounds are a major public health concern and thus require effective and robust remediation technologies. Although laccase-like nanozymes are generally recognized as being catalytically efficient in oxidizing phenols, their support materials often lack resilience in harsh environments. Herein, bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) was introduced as a sustainable, strong, biocompatible, and environmentally friendly biopolymer for the synthesis of a laccase-like nanozyme (BNC/Cu). A native bacterial strain that produces nanocellulose was isolated from black tea

Dietary Fatty Acid Composition Impacts the Fatty Acid Profiles of Different Regions of the Bovine Brain.

Fatty acid composition across functional brain regions was determined in bovine brains collected from cattle that were provided supplements of calcium salts containing either palm or fish oil. The Angus cattle were divided into two groups, with one group offered the supplement of calcium salts of palm oil and the other offered the calcium salts of fish oil (n = 5 females and n = 5 males/supplement) for 220 days. These supplements to the basal forage diet were provided ad libitum as a suspension in dried molasses. The fish oil exclusively provided eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5 n-3) and doco

Citrus peels prevent cancer.

BACKGROUND: Citrus comprises the largest fruit sector worldwide, and its fruit peels are the dominant 'residue' of the industry. Though not profitable, Citrus peels are industrially used for making some byproducts (cattle feed, molasses, ethanol, fiber) and for the extraction of bioactives (flavonoids, essential oils, d-limonene). Still huge amounts of peels are wasted by Citrus industries, juice and other vending sectors. PURPOSE: The biological potentials of these unutilized or 'wasted' Citrus peels are least exploited. Here we tested the anticancer potentials of Citrus medica (2 morphotype
