Larval development of Dicrocoelium dendriticum in Cernuella (Xeromagna) cespitum arigonis under controlled laboratory conditions.

The larval development of Dicrocoelium dendriticum (Digenea: Dicrocoeliidae) in experimentally infected Cernuella (Xeromagna) cespitum arigonis (Schmidt, 1853), a species of mollusc important in the epidemiology of dicrocoeliosis in Spain, has been studied. A total of 948 specimens of this mollusc, distributed in five batches, were tested with individual doses of 50 to 150 parasite eggs, obtained from sheep, after 4 days without food. After infection these molluscs and control specimens were kept in an environmental simulation chamber at 20 degrees C, 50% relative humidity and 7 h of light per

Phase-shifts of the Bulla ocular circadian pacemaker in the presence of calmodulin antagonists.

Previous work has shown that light-induced phase shifts of the Bulla ocular circadian pacemaker require extracellular calcium, suggesting the possibility that the action of calcium as a second messenger via calmodulin is an element in the phase shifting mechanism. The calmodulin antagonists calmidazolium, trifluoperazine (TFP) and W7 were applied with phase shifting light pulses. Light phase shifts were not blocked by calmidazolium or TFP, suggesting that calmodulin does not mediate light-induced phase shifts. Period changes were observed with treatments of both TFP and W7, but not with calmid

Medicinal benefits of marine invertebrates: sources for discovering natural drug candidates.

Marine invertebrates are one of the major groups of organisms, which could be diversified under the major taxonomic groups of Porifera, Cnidaria, Mollusca, Arthropoda, Echinodermata, and many other minor phyla. To date, range of medicinal benefits and a significant number of marine natural products (MNPs) have been discovered from marine invertebrates. Seafood diet from edible marine invertebrates such as mollusks and crustaceans has been linked with various medicinal benefits to improve human health. Among marine invertebrates, spongers from phylum Porifera is the most dominant group responsi

Cephalopod behaviour.

Underlying all animal behaviors, from the simplest reflexive reactions to the more complex cognitive reasoning and social interaction, are nervous systems uniquely adapted to bodies, environments, and challenges of different animal species. Coleoid cephalopods - octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish - are widely recognized as the most behaviorally complex invertebrates and provide exciting opportunities for studying the neural control of behaviour. These unusual molluscs evolved over 400 million years ago from slow-moving armored forms to active predators of coastal and open ocean ecosystems. In th

Pathogen-Derived Carbohydrate Recognition in Molluscs Immune Defense.

Self-nonself discrimination is a common theme for all of the organisms in different evolutionary branches, which is also the most fundamental step for host immune protection. Plenty of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) with great diversity have been identified from different organisms to recognize various pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) in the last two decades, depicting a complicated scene of host-pathogen interaction. However, the detailed mechanism of the complicate PAMPs-PRRs interactions at the contacting interface between pathogens and hosts is still not well understood

Functional Characterization, Antimicrobial Effects, and Potential Antibacterial Mechanisms of NpHM4, a Derived Peptide of Nautilus pompilius Hemocyanin.

Hemocyanins present in the hemolymph of invertebrates are multifunctional proteins that are responsible for oxygen transport and play crucial roles in the immune system. They have also been identified as a source of antimicrobial peptides during infection in mollusks. Hemocyanin has also been identified in the cephalopod ancestor Nautilus, but antimicrobial peptides derived from the hemocyanin of Nautilus pompilius have not been reported. Here, the bactericidal activity of six predicted peptides from N. pompilius hemocyanin and seven mutant peptides was analyzed. Among those peptides, a mutant

Ex vivo development of Phasmarhabditis spp. associated with terrestrial molluscs.

The success of Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita (Schneider) Andrássy (Rhabditida: Rhabditidae) as a biological control agent of molluscs has led to a worldwide interest in phasmarhabditids. However, scant information is available on the lifecycle development of species within the genus. In the current study, the development of P. hermaphrodita, Phasmarhabditis papillosa, Phasmarhabditis bohemica and Phasmarhabditis kenyaensis were studied using ex vivo cultures, in order to improve our understanding of their biology. Infective juveniles (IJs) of each species were added to 1 g of defrosted homogen

Zinc source differentiation in hydrothermal vent mollusks: Insight from Zn isotope ratios.

Hydrothermal vent represents an extreme environment where metal-enriched fluids are in contact with chemosymbiotic animals. In the present study, Zn isotopic compositions were determined in multiple tissues of three dominant hydrothermal vent mollusks (the mussel Bathymodiolus marisindicus and two gastropods Chrysomallon squamiferum and Gigantopelta aegis) collected from a hydrothermal vent field (Southwest Indian Ridge in the Indian Ocean). We found approximately 1.78‰ differences in the δ66Zn values among the three vent mollusks despite of their similar range of Zn concentrations. The signif

Environmental concentrations of Roundup in combination with chlorpromazine or heating causes biochemical disturbances in the bivalve mollusc Unio tumidus.

Bivalve molluscs represent the most recognized bioindicators of freshwater pollution. However, their ability to indicate specific xenobiotics in complex exposures is unclear. In this study, we aimed to track the particular effects of the pesticide Roundup (Rnd) and the antipsychotic drug chlorpromazine (Cpz) on the mussel Unio tumidus at the simpler environmentally relevant models. We treated the mussels by Rnd (17 μg L-1), Cpz (18 μg L-1), the mixture of Rnd and Cpz at 18 °C (RndCpz), and Rnd at 25 °C (RndT) and examined their digestive glands after 14 days of exposure. We analyzed total anti

Apatite mineralization in teeth of the chiton Acanthopleura echinata.

Raman spectroscopy has been used to demonstrate, for the first time, that calcium mineralization in the core of the major lateral teeth of the chiton Acanthopleura echinata takes place as an ordered process, with crystalline carbonated apatite being the first mineral deposited. Deposition begins at the top of the tooth core, under the so-called tab region, progresses down the interior surface of the tab and lepidocrocite layer, and then extends outwards to the anterior surface. Mineralization is not initiated until the lepidocrocite layer has isolated the core of the tooth from the magnetite c

Cyanogenesis in animal-plant interactions.

When there is variation between individuals of the same plant species for a putative defensive chemical it is possible to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the chemical does indeed have a defence function for the plant. The polymorphism for cyanogenesis in Lotus corniculatus and Trifolium repens provides ample evidence that cyanogenesis has an important role in plant defence. This herbivore-plant interaction is, however, far from simple: the degree of selectivity varies between individuals of the same animal species and is influenced by differences in hunger and the type of food previously co

[Survey on Schistosomes of man and livestock in Senegal using specific identification given by chetotaxy of cercaria. I. New arguments for the validation of S. curassoni Brumpt, 1931, parasite of man and domestic Bovidae].

Study of Senegal cercariae emitted by naturally infected snails or by snails experimentally infected using eggs from human urine or from sheep liver, and study of the corresponding eggs. The relative position of the dorsal sensillae of cercariae is described by an "AD index" and the ratio length/width of eggs by an "L/l index." At the present time, we have not finished the epidemiological studies, certain experiments are imperfect and the isoenzyme analysis of the corresponding adults is incomplete. Nevertheless information given by the indices AD and L/l agree and lead us to admit the existen

A comparison of DNA extraction methods for high-throughput DNA analyses.

The inclusion of next-generation sequencing technologies in population genetic and phylogenetic studies has elevated the need to balance time and cost of DNA extraction without compromising DNA quality. We tested eight extraction methods - ranging from low- to high-throughput techniques - and eight phyla: Annelida, Arthropoda, Cnidaria, Chordata, Echinodermata, Mollusca, Ochrophyta and Porifera. We assessed DNA yield, purity, efficacy and cost of each method. Extraction efficacy was quantified using the proportion of successful polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of two molecular mar

[Contribution to the study of Microphallidae travassos, 1920 (Trematoda). XLV. Description of Maritrema feliui n. sp., parasite of shrews (Mammals) in Spain].

The authors describe and illustrate the morphology of the adult stage of Maritrema feliui n. sp. (Trematoda Microphallidae) obtained from the intestine of the shrew Crocidura russula (Hermann, 1780), definitive host of the fluke present in the estuary of the river Llobregat (Catalonia, Spain). The larval stages are found in two hosts obtained from the area: 1) Mercuria confusa (Frauenfeld) [= Pseudamnicola similis (Draparnaud)] (Mollusca: Hydrobiidae), and 2) Gammarus aequicauda (Martynov) (Crustacea: Amphipoda). The adult stage is anatomically related to the Maritrema with a mean size of the

Mollusk-Derived Peptides at the Food-Pharma Interface: Bioactivities, Preclinical Evidence, and Development Prospects.

Mollusk-derived peptides are an expanding class of marine bioactive molecules that link food-protein utilization with pharmaceutical peptide discovery. They are derived from taxonomically and biologically diverse sources such as edible gastropods, bivalves, cephalopods and highly modified conopeptides from cone snails. However, there is a lack of integrated understanding of sources, structures and functions of these peptides and their potential applications in food science, pharmacology, and venom research. In this review, the current knowledge related to mollusk-derived peptides from a food-p
