BACKGROUND Rat bite fever (RBF) is a rare but fatal zoonotic disease caused by infections with various bacteria, which are transmitted from rats or other rodents. Only a few patients worldwide are diagnosed with RBF annually. RBF can be fatal if left untreated, with a mortality rate of about 10% in patients with severe RBF. CASE REPORT A case 37-year-old previously healthy man presented to the emergency department with acute gastroenteritis, sepsis and multi-organ failure requiring ventilatory support. He was later diagnosed with RBF due to Streptobacillus moniliformis. He recovered rapidly af

Chorioamnionitis is a potentially life threatening infection of the fetal membranes, commonly caused by ascending bacteria from the vagina and cervix. In our case, a healthy nullipara with a term pregnancy presented clinical signs of infection after induced labour with an intracervical balloon. Thick green and foul smelling amniotic fluid was observed and culture showed massive growth of Aerococcus christensenii, a facultative anaerob species found in the human vagina, previously only rarely alleged to cause invasive infection. Additional testing with 16S rRNA gene analysis also identified the

Ten cases of splenic abscess seen between 1964 and 1974 are reviewed. Pain referable to the abscess was the most common symptom, but was present in only five cases. Fever was present in all but one case. Tenderness in the region of the spleen was noted in six cases, in three cases the spleen was palpable and in one case a large mass in the upper left quadrant of the abdomen was palpated. Abdominal films were suggestive of the diagnosis in two cases, and the liver-spleen scan demonstrated a defect in three cases. Seven abscesses were caused by gram-negative bacilli of bowel origin; the etiologi

Rat bite fever (RBF), a worldwide occurring and most likely under-diagnosed zoonosis caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis, represents the most prominent disease of Streptobacillus infections. Recently, novel members have been described, from which a reservoir in rats and other animal species and a zoonotic potential can be assumed. Despite regularly published case reports, diagnostics of RBF continues to represent a 'diagnostic dilemma', because the mostly applied 16S rRNA sequence analysis may be uncertain for proper pathogen identification. Virtually nothing is known regarding prevalence i

INTRODUCTION: Rat bite fever is a rare zoonotic illness that presents with nonspecific symptoms. Rapid identification and treatment are essential to reduce morbidity or mortality.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old male presented to the emergency department with severe headache and arthralgias. His history was notable for multiple bites and scratches from pet rats. He was admitted for further evaluation after meeting systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) criteria for sepsis. A meningitis workup was unrevealing. He was treated for presumed rat bite fever with amoxicillin and discharged

Over the period 1981-92, 32 bacterial isolates were referred to the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit from infected dog-bite wounds and 10 isolates were submitted from blood cultures after dog bites or close contact with dogs. The isolates from the bite wounds were identified, or confirmed, as Pasteurella multocida (11 isolates), Pasteurella dagmatis (3), CDC group M-5 (9), CDC group EF-4a (8) and Streptococcus anginosus (1). Five of the 9 patients from whom CDC group M-5 was cultured had mixed infections: 2 with P. multocida one of which also had Bacteroides sp., one with P. dagmatis, one with

In August 2013, the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency was notified of a fatal case of rat-bite fever (RBF) in a previously healthy male, aged 10 years, who owned pet rats. Two days before his death, the patient experienced rigors, fevers, vomiting, headaches, and leg pains. His physician noted a fever of 102.6°F (39.2ºC), documented a normal examination, diagnosed viral gastroenteritis, and prescribed anti-nausea medication. During the next 24 hours, the patient experienced vomiting and persistent fever. He was confused and weak before collapsing at home. Paramedics reported

Spontaneous nephropathy in Bulgaria, which is observed frequently during meat inspection and which differs morphologically from the classical description of mycotoxic porcine/chicken nephropathy as made in Denmark, was found to have a multi-mycotoxic aetiology being mainly provoked by a combined effect of ochratoxin A, penicillic acid and fumonisin B1 in addition to a not-yet-known metabolite. Mean contamination levels of ochratoxin A were consecutively low (188.8 and 376.4 microg kg(-1)) in contrast to high contamination levels of fumonisin B1 (5564.1 and 3254.5 microg kg(-1)) and penicillic

INTRODUCTION: Synanthropic rodents of the genus Rattus are reservoirs of different zoonotic bacteria, such as Streptobacillus moniliformis and Spirillum minus. These are mainly transmitted by bites and can cause an infection called rat bite fever, which, if not treated quickly, can cause death. Given that currently the rat bite accident is not a mandatory notification event within the health system of the City of Buenos Aires, there is no record of it.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In order to obtain information about the problem, a survey was carried out through an interview to investigate variable

Rat bite fever (RBF) is a rare infectious zoonotic disease caused by two bacterial species: the Gram-negative rod Streptobacillus moniliformis and the Gram-negative coiled rod Spirillum minus. The association between RBF and skin vasculitis and arthritis has been observed. The aim of this paper was to present a case of rat-bite fever with symptoms of skin vasculitis and arthritis, associated with high titers of ANCA antibodies and anti-endothelial cell antibodies suggestive of primary vasculitis. The patient was successfully treated with antibiotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, l

BACKGROUND: Rat bite fever is a rare infection that can cause severe complications such as infective endocarditis with a mortality rate of 13% if left untreated.
CASE SUMMARY: We present the first reported fatal case of rat bite fever requiring mechanical circulatory support in a 48-year-old woman who presented with diarrhea, syncope, and lower back pain. Echocardiogram revealed tricuspid valve endocarditis, a large aortic root abscess, and a moderate-to-large membranous ventricular septal defect. After empiric antibiotics and extensive cardiac surgery, the patient remained in refractory card

BACKGROUND: Rat bite fever (RBF) is a rare but potentially fatal zoonotic disease caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis or Spirillum minus. In Asia, it is often caused by Spirillum minus and may present with atypical clinical features that complicate diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old female from Far-Western Nepal developed fever and progressive localized swelling of the right hand eight days after a rat bite. Classic systemic features like rash, polyarthritis, and lymphadenopathy were absent. Laboratory tests showed neutrophilia, thrombocytopenia, and elevated CRP, while blood cult

Sentinel surveillance plays a critical role in monitoring pathogen circulation, assessing potential threats for species conservation, and evaluating the risk of spillover to human populations. This study provides a comprehensive exploration of helminth parasites in the Mediterranean-distributed hedgehog species Atelerix algirus in Mallorca, Balearic Islands. Using an integrated approach that combines necropsies and morphological and molecular identifications using the COI gene, we identified 11 helminth taxa in 135 hedgehogs, representing half of those that died at the local wildlife hospital

Bacteria are relevant in rodent quality assurance programmes if (a) the animals are at risk and (b) presence in the animals makes a difference for animal research or welfare, for example because the agent regulates clinical disease progression or impacts its host in other ways. Furthermore, zoonoses are relevant. Some bacterial species internationally recommended for the health monitoring of rats and mice, that is, Citrobacter rodentium, Corynebacterium kutscheri, Salmonella spp. and Streptococcus pneumonia, are no longer found in either laboratory or pet shop rats or mice, while there is stil

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), constituted by repeating uronate and amino sugar units, are major components of mammalian extracellular matrices. Some indigenous and pathogenic bacteria target GAGs for colonization to and/or infection of host mammalian cells. In Gram-negative pathogenic Streptobacillus moniliformis, the solute-binding protein (Smon0123)-dependent ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter incorporates unsaturated GAG disaccharides into the cytoplasm after depolymerization by polysaccharide lyase. Smon0123, composed of N and C domains, adopts either a substrate-free open or a substrate-

Gastrointestinal parasites are well-documented in small mammals from north-central Chile, but little is known about endoparasites of rodents in southern Chile. A survey was conducted between January and February 2018 to evaluate gastrointestinal parasites and risk factors of wild rodents that live in rural areas in Northern Chiloé Island, Chile. A total of 174 fecal samples from rodents of six native and one introduced species were collected and examined using the Mini-FLOTAC method. Also, 41 individuals of four native wild rodent species were examined furtherly to determinate adult parasites

The dominant helminths infecting spiny mice (Acomys dimidiatus) in the montane wadis of the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt are spirurid nematodes, notably Protospirura muricola and Mastophorus muris. Both are relatively large robust stomach worms that accumulate in hosts resulting in high worm burdens. To ascertain whether the presence of spirurid worms or their burdens alters the host's likelihood of infection with other helminth species, we analysed a database containing quantitative data on helminth parasites of these mice (n = 431). This comprised of worm burdens recorded during 4 surveys, condu
