Affective Computing for Late-Life Mood and Cognitive Disorders.

Affective computing (also referred to as artificial emotion intelligence or emotion AI) is the study and development of systems and devices that can recognize, interpret, process, and simulate emotion or other affective phenomena. With the rapid growth in the aging population around the world, affective computing has immense potential to benefit the treatment and care of late-life mood and cognitive disorders. For late-life depression, affective computing ranging from vocal biomarkers to facial expressions to social media behavioral analysis can be used to address inadequacies of current scree

Diabetes and mood disorders: shared mechanisms and therapeutic opportunities.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this manuscript is to provide a comprehensive and critical overview of the current evidence on the association between Diabetes mellitus (DM) and mood disorders [i.e., Major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD)], and therapeutic opportunities. METHODS: We searched in MEDLINE (via Ovid) for placebo-controlled clinical trials published in the last 20 years that assessed drug repurposing approaches for the treatment of DM or mood disorders. RESULTS: We found seven studies that aimed to verify the effects of antidepressants in patients diagnosed with DM

From cerebellar alterations to mood disorders: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown cerebellar abnormalities during depressive and manic states, although the specific cerebellar role in mood fluctuations remains poorly defined. Therefore, the study of pathologies characterized by frequent mood swings, such as bipolar disorder, is of great interest to investigate the relationship between the cerebellum and mood alterations. METHODS: A systematic literature search on the occurrence of mood disorders in patients with cerebellar pathologies (1st research strategy) and on the presence of cerebellar alterations in mood disorders (2nd research

Overcoming the Social Stigma on Mood Disorders with Dancing.

In our society, the social stigma against people who suffer from mood disorders is a very powerful factor that negatively affects the healing of patient. He is often isolated from the others for the fear of being judged "fool, crazy or dangerous" or discriminated and emarginated for his mental health problem. For this reason, a cornerstone of mood disorder rehabilitation is the bringing out of the patient from his isolation, the reintegration of the user in the social context with the increase and the improvement in the quality of interpersonal relationships in the family and in the external c

Suicidal Behavior in Mood Disorders: Response to Pharmacological Treatment.

Suicidal behavior is strongly associated with depression, especially if accompanied by behavioral activation, dysphoria, or agitation. It may respond to some treatments, but the design of scientifically sound, ethical trials to test for therapeutic effects on suicidal behavior is highly challenging. In bipolar disorder, and possibly also unipolar major depression, an underprescribed medical intervention with substantial evidence of preventive effects on suicidal behavior is long-term treatment with lithium. It is unclear whether this effect is specifically antisuicidal or reflects beneficial e

Mood disorders in restless legs syndrome (Willis-Ekbom disease).

OBJECTIVE: Restless legs syndrome (RLS), also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is a sensorimotor disorder that can result in considerable sleep disruption. This narrative review provides an overview of RLS diagnosis and reports epidemiologic evidence for an association between RLS and mood disorders. Possible links between RLS, sleep disturbances, and mood disorders are considered, and theoretical pathophysiologic pathways are discussed. Finally, pharmacologic therapies for RLS are summarized. DATA SOURCES: A PubMed search was performed using the search term restless legs syndrome in combinatio

Serum S100B represents a new biomarker for mood disorders.

Recently, mood disorders have been discussed to be characterized by glial pathology. The protein S100B, a growth and differentiation factor, is located in, and may actively be released by astro- and oligodendrocytes. This protein is easily assessed in human serum and provides a useful parameter for glial activation or injury. Here, we review studies investigating the glial marker S100B in serum of patients with mood disorders. Studies consistently show that S100B is elevated in mood disorders; more strongly in major depressive than bipolar disorder. Consistent with the glial hypothesis of mood

[Interpreting cognitive impairment in mood disorders in the elderly].

In the elderly, cognitive impairment is often associated with depression. Through two case reports, we would like to underline that cognitive impairment should not be reduced immediately to an organic disorder but should be interpreted considering its potential meaning in the psychic life of the patient. The case of Mme R. show that a psychic trauma can lead to cognitive dysfunction by regression mechanisms, and the story of Mme S. remind us that cognitive capacity can fluctuate according to intrapsychic conflicts even in the course of a neurodegenerative disease. Cognitive impairment in depre

Novel drugs and therapeutic targets for severe mood disorders.

Monoaminergic-based drugs remain the primary focus of pharmaceutical industry drug discovery efforts for mood disorders, despite serious limitations regarding their ability to achieve remission. The quest for novel therapies for unipolar depression and bipolar disorder has generally centered on two complementary approaches: (1) understanding the presumed therapeutically relevant biochemical targets of currently available medications, and using that knowledge to design new drugs directed at both direct biochemical targets and downstream targets that are regulated by chronic drug administration;

Romantic attachment in patients with mood and anxiety disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Romantic attachment is the establishment of a relationship with a partner and is strongly influenced by the individual's attachment style. While several studies have shown that attachment style may contribute to the development of psychopathology, less information is available for romantic attachment. The aim of the present study was to compare romantic attachment styles among patients with different mood and anxiety disorders and control subjects. METHOD: The study sample included a total of 126 outpatients, 62 of whom were affected by bipolar disorders, 22 by major depressive

Potential of levetiracetam in mood disorders: a preliminary review.

Panic disorder occurs less frequently in the elderly than in younger adults and rarely starts for the first time in old age. Panic attacks that begin in late life should prompt the clinician to conduct a careful search for a depressive disorder, physical illness or drugs that could be contributing to their presence. When panic attacks do occur in the elderly, the symptoms are qualitatively similar to those experienced by younger people. The elderly, however, may have fewer and less severe symptoms and exhibit less avoidant behaviour. As panic disorder is typically a chronic or recurrent condit

Pharmacotherapy of comorbid mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders.

Mood and anxiety disorders commonly co-occur with substance use disorders. Exploration of the neurobiology of substance use disorders and mood and anxiety disorders have found that the neural circuitry in mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders is clearly overlapping. These discoveries have encouraged the exploration of a number of pharmacotherapeutic agents in the treatment of co-occurring mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders. In this article, recent data on the pharmacotherapeutic treatment of mood and anxiety disorders in individuals with substance use disorders are reviewed. Some

Childhood adversity and vulnerability to mood and anxiety disorders.

Based upon epidemiological surveys, adverse childhood events are proposed to be risk factors for adult depressive and anxiety disorders. However, the extent to which these events are seen in clinical patient populations is less clear. We examined the prevalence of a number of proposed risk factors for depression in 650 patients with mood and anxiety disorders at the time of presentation for treatment in an outpatient subspecialty clinic. Emotional abuse, physical abuse, or sexual abuse (childhood adversity) was found in approximately 35% of patients with major depression and panic disorder, wa

Results of the DSM-IV mood disorders field trial.

OBJECTIVE: The DSM-IV mood disorders field trial, a multisite collaborative study, was designed to explore the reliability of a course-based diagnostic classification system for major depression, evaluate the symptom criteria for dysthymia, and explore the need for additional diagnostic categories for milder forms of mood disorder (e.g., minor and recurrent brief depression). METHOD: Five hundred twenty-four depressed subjects were recruited from inpatient, outpatient, and community settings at five sites and evaluated with structured interviews according to DSM-III and DSM-III-R criteria, wi

Copper excess in psychiatric disorders: a focus on mood spectrum disorders and sex.

BACKGROUND: Meta-analyses show increased copper (Cu) levels in major depression disorder. However, the association of Cu biomarkers with clinical classification in other mental health disorders has not been fully explored. METHODS: To this aim, we compared an extensive panel of Cu biomarkers, composed of Cu, ceruloplasmin (Cp) Cp activity, Cp specific activity, Cu not bound to ceruloplasmin (non-Cp Cu, also known as 'free' copper) in 171 consecutive patients affected by psychiatric disorders and in 61 healthy controls (HC) using MANOVA adjusting for the effect of sex and age, and studied thei
