The impact of commuter war on military personnel.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. armed forces recently experienced a reduction in forces along with an increase in operational tempo. The Air Force and other branches supporting its mission share this common military burden and also experience a unique stressor. The Air Force has developed a military force that can fight by night and return home by day. The relatively new phenomenon of "commuter war" was especially evident during Operation Allied Force over Kosovo. METHODS: Military personnel (N = 540) participating in Operation Allied Force were administered a survey measuring morale, wellness behaviors

Associations Between Family Risk Factors and Child Neglect Types in U.S. Army Communities.

Recent theory and empirical research suggest that child neglect is a heterogeneous phenomenon characterized by various types. This study examined family risk factors associated with five neglect types including failure to provide physical needs, lack of supervision, emotional neglect, moral-legal neglect, and educational neglect in 390 substantiated cases of neglect in four U.S. Army communities. Family factors associated with elevated risk of each neglect type relative to other types were identified using multivariate regression. Relatively distinct sets of family risk factors were differenti

Moral Injury and Shame Mediate the Relationship Between Childhood Trauma and Borderline Personality Disorder, PTSD, and Complex PTSD Symptoms in Psychiatric Inpatients.

Moral injury (MI) has received increased research attention in the past decades. However, despite its detrimental mental health consequences, MI has not been studied in psychiatric patients. We aimed to establish the relationship between childhood trauma, MI, and borderline personality disorder (BPD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and disturbances in self-organization symptoms (DSO), a core diagnostic criterion of complex PTSD besides PTSD symptoms, and shame as a moral emotion in an inpatient psychiatric sample (N = 240). We found that the impact of childhood trauma on present BPD, PT

Scents of right and wrong: how odor-induced affect shapes moral judgment in adults and preschoolers.

Recent research suggests that incidental affect, including odor-elicited emotion, can shape moral judgment in adults. However, little is known about how this influence develops across early childhood. The present research examined whether pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant odors modulate moral evaluations of care and purity violations in adults and preschool-aged children. In Study 1, 36 undergraduates completed a within-subjects task under three odor conditions. In Study 2, 93 children aged 3 to 6 years completed a developmentally adapted version of the same task. Among adults, odor effects we

Moral injury and burnout among saudi educators under vision 2030: An interpretative phenomenological study of systemic ethical tensions.

Moral injury is a term that refers to the psychological and emotional impact of an individual's actions, or inactions, which violate their ethical standards and beliefs. This study examined how educators working at educational institutions in Saudi Arabia are experiencing both moral injury and burnout due to the increased reliance on standardized performance assessment and increased bureaucracy associated with the implementation of Vision 2030. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 educators representing a range of curriculum areas and locations throughout Saudi Arabia. Th

Minors, Moral Psychology, and the Harm Reduction Debate: The Case of Tobacco and Nicotine.

Harm reduction debates are important in health policy. Although it has been established that morality affects policy, this article proposes that perspectives from moral psychology help to explain the challenges of developing evidence-based policy on prohibition-only versus tobacco/nicotine harm reduction for minors. Protecting youth from tobacco is critical, especially since tobacco/nicotine products are legal for adults, who usually begin using when young. Although cigarettes and other combustibles are the deadliest tobacco products, other products such as smokeless tobacco and electronic cig

Ethical Perspectives on Body Donation Following Physician-Assisted Death.

The increasing availability of physician-assisted death (PAD) has opened up a novel means of making donated bodies available for anatomical dissection. This practice has come to the fore in Canada, but is unlikely to be confined to that country as legislation changes in other countries. The ethical considerations raised by this development are placed within the framework of the ethical guidelines on body donation promulgated by the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists. The discussion centers on understanding the ethical dimensions of moral complicity, and whether it is accept

Affecting future individuals: Why and when germline genome editing entails a greater moral obligation towards progeny.

Assisted reproductive technologies have greatly increased our control over reproductive choices, leading some bioethicists to argue that we face unprecedented moral obligations towards progeny. Several models attempting to balance the principle of procreative autonomy with these obligations have been proposed. The least demanding is the minimal threshold model (MTM), according to which every reproductive choice is permissible, except creating children whose lives will not be worth living. Hence, as long as the future child is likely to have a life worth living, prospective parents may be allow

Competence as a predictor of sexual and reproductive health outcomes for youth: a systematic review.

To examine the association between "competence" and adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) outcomes. Competence refers to the development of skills to perform tasks successfully in four areas including social and behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and moral competence. We conducted a systematic review of research published from 1985 through 2007. Inclusion criteria included use of multivariate analyses, a sample size of >or=100, publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and measurement of an ASRH outcome. We coded findings as protective, risk, or no association and as longitudinal or cr

Why Human Germline Editing is More Problematic than Selecting Between Embryos: Ethically Considering Intergenerational Relationships.

Do we have a moral obligation to genetically cure embryos rather than selecting between them? Such an obligation would be an ethical argument for human germline gene editing (hGGE) to avoid the inheritance of genetic conditions instead of using pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). In this article, the intuition that we do have such a moral obligation is critically evaluated. The article first develops a theoretical framework for discussing the ethical questions of hGGE. This framework is based on an exploration of the phenomenology of the germline, from both biological and philosophical p

Waiting to be born: the ethical implications of the generation of "NUBorn" and "NUAge" mice from pre-pubertal ovarian tissue.

Oncofertility is one of the 9 NIH Roadmap Initiatives, federal grants intended to explore previously intractable questions, and it describes a new field that exists in the liminal space between cancer treatment and its sequelae, IVF clinics and their yearning, and basic research in cell growth, biomaterials, and reproductive science and its tempting promises. Cancer diagnoses, which were once thought universally fatal, now often entail management of a chronic disease. Yet the therapies are rigorous, must start immediately, and in many cases result in premature failure of the body's reproductiv

Reducing moral distress through interdisciplinary collaboration: the impact of a weekly palliative care and neonatology conference.

BACKGROUND: Moral distress is the experience of knowing what ethically right action to take, but being unable to act accordingly, due to external factors. It is an experience common to providers working in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) where care for infants, often born at the edges of viability or with other life-limiting diagnoses, includes life and death medical decision-making in the context of uncertain prognoses. Palliative care, which aims to reduce suffering, can assist with staff moral distress by providing space for conversations regarding goals-of-care and end-of-life deci

The dark silence: Dark triad personality traits as predictors of quiet quitting intention.

Prior studies have found associations between dark triad personality traits and counterproductive work behaviours. However, the link between the dark triad traits and quiet quitting has not been investigated in the literature. Moreover, little is known about the psychological mechanism underlying this relationship. This study sought to investigate the link between dark triad personality traits and quiet quitting intention of senior-level managers. Additionally, the role of psychological entitlement and moral disengagement was evaluated in this relationship. A cross-sectional survey-based desig

Kant's discussion of the ethical implications of smallpox inoculation is presented here. In four fragments Kant analyzes the moral legitimacy of endangering other people in medical practice and especially endangering people who are incapable of giving consent. In addition, we re-evaluate the alleged "success story" of the development of smallpox prevention and review the technical and theoretical difficulties of smallpox inoculation at the time of Kant.

Commentary: Moral and Ethical Leadership in the Age of Diversity, Equity, Inclusiveness and Social Accountability.

This article weighs three important moral and ethical considerations for leaders in healthcare: their obligations to society, their privilege as leaders and how value goes beyond a simple cost analysis. Leaders highly motivated by the bottom line have avoided the long overdue action on moral and ethical considerations critical to a more just and fairer society. Leaders are now being tasked to develop strategies for health equity, anti-oppression, anti-racism, social justice, diversity, equity and inclusiveness, community engagement, the social determinants of health and environmental accountab

Medical decisions influenced by eugenics: Hungarian gynecological practices during the 1910s.

This study contributes to the discussion on the development of eugenics in Central-Eastern Europe by tracing the way that eugenic ideas entered into medical decision-making in Hungary. Through a case study that reviews the professional argumentation of the gynecological management of tuberculosis pregnancies, this paper shows that the subordination of individual reproductive rights to state interests was influenced by the ideas of eugenics, which had begun to enter into the professional public health discourse. A eugenically informed morality was envisioned, to guide decision-making in the int

Ethical issues related to caring for low birth weight infants.

BACKGROUND: Currently preterm births are the leading causes of newborn deaths and newborn mortality in developed countries. Infants born prematurely remain vulnerable to many acute complications and long-term disabilities. There is a growing concern surrounding the moral and ethical implications of the complex and technological care being provided to extremely low birth weight infants in neonatal intensive care units in the developed nations. RESEARCH PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the ethical and moral issues that neonatal intensive care nurses experience when caring for

Towards an Extended Cognitive Model of Moral Injury-The Role of Mental Defeat.

Moral injury (MI) is a proposed syndrome that develops when someone is exposed to, participates in, or fails to prevent an action that fundamentally violates their moral code and results in maladaptive cognitions about oneself and humanity. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disorder based on maladaptive cognitions that develops following a traumatic event. Decades of PTSD research underscore that the experience of mental defeat, or the perception that one was completely defeated during the traumatic event, plays a significant role in the development and maintenance of PTSD. Less work,

Constrained endurance in long-term family caregiving: Rethinking resilience through nursing ethics.

Resilience is an established concept in family-caregiver research, where it is used to describe how caregivers maintain functioning and adapt to sustained adversity. In long-term family care for older adults with disabilities, however, resilience is ethically ambiguous. Continued care may reflect adaptive capacity, relational commitment and caregiving competence, but it may also be shaped by dependency, moral obligation, cultural expectations and limited alternatives. This article critically examines the ethical implications of caregiver resilience and develops the concept of constrained endur

Moral universe of Muslim healthcare practitioners in the UK: balancing Islamic and secular ethics in palliative and end-of-life care.

In this paper, we evaluate the ethical challenges faced by Muslim healthcare professionals (HCPs) working in palliative and end-of-life care (P&EOLC) in the UK. Aiming to contribute to an empirical foundation on which ethical support systems for religious HCPs can be built, we compare Islamic moral frameworks with the secular ethics of the NHS (National Health Service) and assess how Muslim HCPs navigate the integration of both. This qualitative study includes 76 semistructured interviews with Muslim patients, family members and a variety of Muslim and non-Muslim palliative care providers.
