Effects of Moraxella bovis vaccination schedules on experimentally induced infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

An oil-adjuvant Moraxella bovis bacterin was administered to weanling calves, using different vaccination schedules. Calves were given a booster vaccination after 3 weeks and were challenge exposed 2 weeks later with virulent M bovis recovered from calves with clinical infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). The effects of different routes of vaccination and homologous and heterologous challenge exposure on the incidence, severity, and duration of induced IBK was evaluated. All calves given a placebo developed clinical IBK. Calves vaccinated subcutaneously in the neck had the shortest du

Moraxella catarrhalis Septic Arthritis Unveils Undiagnosed Systemic Lupus Erythematous in a Pediatric Patient.

Septic arthritis is uncommon in pediatric patients, who are less likely to have major risk factors such as underlying joint disease or prosthetic joints. It only rarely affects the elbow and is usually caused by Gram-positive cocci, with Staphylococcus aureus being the most common bacterial organism. We present the case of a 15-year-old previously healthy female who experienced new-onset monoarticular nontraumatic elbow pain and was found to have a synovial effusion growing from Moraxella catarrhalis. The atypical clinical presentation, coupled with the growth of an unusual organism, raised co

Serum antibody response to Moraxella catarrhalis proteins in stringently defined otitis prone children.

BACKGROUND: Moraxella catarrhalis (Mcat) is a frequent pathogen of acute otitis media (AOM) in young children. Here we prospectively assessed naturally-induced serum antibodies to four Mcat vaccine candidate proteins in stringently defined otitis prone (sOP) and non-otitis prone (NOP) children age 6-36months old following nasopharyngeal (NP) colonization, at onset of AOM and convalescence from AOM. METHODS: Serum IgG and IgM antibody against recombinant Mcat proteins, oligopeptide permease A (OppA), outer membrane protein (OMP) CD, hemagglutinin (Hag), and PilA clade 2 (PilA2), were quantitat

Diversity of Moraxella spp. strains recovered from infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis cases in Uruguay.

BACKGROUND: Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is the most common ocular disease that affects cattle throughout the world and it has a very significant economic impact. IBK is caused by members of the genus Moraxella and therapeutic and preventive measures have shown limited success. Vaccines, most of them chemically inactivated bacterins, generally induce a limited protection. METHODOLOGY: In this study, the genetic diversity of Uruguayan clinical Moraxella bovis and Moraxella bovoculi isolates was assessed by RAPD-PCR, ERIC-PCR and BOX-PCR fingerprinting. Also, antibiotic resistan

Whole-bacterial cell enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for cell-bound Moraxella bovis pili.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), caused by Moraxella bovis, is a disease of major importance in cattle industry. M. bovis has several virulence factors among which pili are crucial antigen for the protective capacity of vaccines against this disease. The production of vaccines against IBK therefore requires a reliable technique for cellular piliation level assessment on cells to be included as vaccine components. In this study we describe a specific whole-bacterial cell enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (bact-ELISA) capable of detecting pili antigen on M. bovis cell surface. A seq

beta-Lactam resistance and beta-lactamase isoforms of Moraxella catarrhalis isolates in Taiwan.

Moraxella catarrhalis is an important pathogen in both upper and lower respiratory tract infections. More than 90% of isolates worldwide produce beta-lactamase. The beta-lactamases produced by M. catarrhalis can be differentiated by isoelectric focusing (IEF) into BRO-1 and BRO-2 patterns. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of various beta-lactamase isoforms in clinical isolates of M. catarrhalis in Taiwan, as well as the relationships of these isoforms with antibiotic resistance. A total of 271 clinical isolates of M. catarrhalis were collected from 12 large medical laboratories in

Antimicrobial susceptibility of Moraxella bovis determined by agar disk diffusion and broth microdilution.

The antimicrobial susceptibility of 84 isolates of Moraxella bovis was evaluated by the standard agar disk diffusion and broth microdilution procedures. All isolates were resistant to cloxacillin by disk diffusion, with 97% of isolates having a minimal inhibitory concentration of greater than or equal to 2 micrograms/ml. Of the hemolytic isolates, 68% were resistant to streptomycin. A high frequency of susceptibility was recorded for all other antimicrobial agents tested. Quantitative data supported the use of sulfonamides, but not tylosin, for parenteral infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis: effects of vaccination on Moraxella bovis carrier state in cattle.

A study was conducted to determine whether vaccination of cattle while they were undergoing an acute episode of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), would cause vaccinated cattle to abort Moraxella bovis infection sooner than nonvaccinated cattle. Fourteen calves were allotted into two groups of seven calves each, and the eyes of each calf were exposed to a virulent culture of M bovis. Twenty days after calves were infected and showing signs of IBK, seven calves were vaccinated with M bovis pilus vaccine made from the exposure strain. Ocular and nasal discharges were collected and exa

Surgical treatment of fungating lesion of foot due to Moraxella phenylpyruvica. Case report.

We present a case report of a man who had an abscess-like lesion on his left foot. The lesion discharged pus, enlarged, and became thicker, so that we could not differentiate the real toes from the out-growths. Moraxella phenylpyruvica and Pseudomonas putrefaciens were identified; direct agglutination tests were postive M. phyenylpyruvica. He was given antibiotics and antituberculosis therapy and had topical treatments. The foul odor disappeared with treatment, and the lesions were removed surgically 3 months later. The M. phenylpyruvica finally disappeared after the surgery. The final conditi

Establishment and clinical application of a rapid RPA-LFS assay for detecting Moraxella catarrhalis.

BACKGROUND: Moraxella catarrhalis (M. catarrhalis) is an important opportunistic pathogen causing respiratory tract infections, and current detection methods are limited by low sensitivity, heavy instrument dependence or complex operation, which cannot meet the needs of rapid clinical and on-site testing. METHODS: The copB gene is a species-specific conserved gene of M. catarrhalis, which was selected as the target for specific detection. Primers and probe were designed using Primer Premier 5.0 software and online tools. The limit of detection was determined using standard strains, and the cl

Meningitis due to Moraxella nonliquefaciens in a paediatric patient: a case report and review of the literature.

Introduction.Moraxella nonliquefaciens is an unusual organism to be isolated from cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) and there exists only one case report of M. nonliquefaciens meningitis from a neonate. Moraxella species normally exist as part of the human upper respiratory tract flora and rarely cause invasive human disease. There are only a handful of case reports implicating the organism as a cause of endocarditis, bacteraemia, septic arthritis and endophthalmitis. Identification to the species level based on routine laboratory techniques has been challenging, with final identification often made

Pacemaker lead perforation of the right ventricle associated with Moraxella phenylpyruvica infection in a dog.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old neutered male Border Collie was presented with acute onset syncope, weakness and anorexia 10 months after transvenous pacemaker implantation. The patient was laterally recumbent, bradycardic (36 beats/min) and febrile (40.7°C) on presentation. An electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed recurrence of third-degree atrioventricular block with a ventricular escape rhythm. Fluoroscopy identified migration of the pacemaker tip through the apex of the right ventricle. Echocardiography failed to reveal any evidence of pericardial effusion or cardiac tamponade. Full postmortem

Genetic analysis of a pediatric clinical isolate of Moraxella catarrhalis with resistance to macrolides and quinolones.

During the surveillance conducted in 2012 by the Drug-resistant Pathogen Surveillance Group in Pediatric Infectious Disease, we isolated a strain of Moraxella catarrhalis that demonstrated resistance to both macrolides and quinolones from a male pediatric patient aged 1.5 years who had developed acute bronchitis. Then we evaluated the susceptibility of this strain to different types of antibacterial agents and conducted a genetic analysis. The results of the susceptibility evaluation showed that the MIC values of azithromycin, clarithromycin, and rokitamycin were >64 μg/mL, >64 μg/mL, and 4 μg

Molecular and phenotypic analysis of Moraxella spp. associated with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis in Uruguay.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is a common ocular disease of cattle, which is generally thought to be caused by Moraxella bovis. However, a recently characterized Moraxella, M. bovoculi, has been isolated from animals with IBK. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize strains of Moraxella spp. obtained from IBK cases in different geographic locations within Uruguay. Ribosomal gene sequencing indicated that there were two groups of isolates that showed homology with either M. bovis or M. bovoculi. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed the presence of two species as the iso

A Field Trial of a Pilated Moraxella bovis Bacterin for the Prevention of Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis.

Two field trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a Moraxella bovis bacterin in the control of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. The bacterin did not affect the incidence of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis in either trial but did appear to reduce the severity of lesions, treatments required and withdrawals from pasture required in one trial. Possible reasons for the apparently contradictory results are offered. It is suggested that the bacterin may be of some value when used in conjunction with other preventive measures.
