In Vivo Scaphoid Motion During Thumb and Forearm Motion in Casts for Scaphoid Fractures.

PURPOSE: In nonsurgical treatment for acute undisplaced or minimally displaced scaphoid waist fractures, immobilization of both wrist and thumb can be an option. However, in vivo scaphoid motion during forearm and thumb motion with the wrist immobilized in a cast has not been measured. Therefore, we examined the in vivo kinematics of the scaphoid during forearm and thumb motion with cast immobilization. METHODS: Ten healthy right wrists of 10 male volunteers were included. These wrists were immobilized in a short-arm spica cast with the thumb in a position of volar abduction and then were sca

The motion-induced position shift depends on the perceived direction of bistable quartet motion.

Motion can influence the perceived position of nearby stationary objects (Nature Neuroscience 3 (2000) 954). To investigate the influence of high-level motion processes on the position shift while controlling for low-level motion signals, we measured the position shift as a function of the motion seen in a bistable quartet. In this stimulus, motion can be seen along either one or the other of two possible paths. An illusory position shift was observed only when the flashes were adjacent to the path where motion was perceived. If the flash was adjacent to the other path, where no motion was per

Motion--pancreatic endoscopy is useful for the pain of chronic pancreatitis: arguments against the motion.

Endoscopic therapy can be used to dilate strictures in the pancreatic duct, remove stones and drain pseudocysts. In addition, it provides an alternative to surgery for the management of pain in patients with chronic pancreatitis. Pain is a difficult problem in these patients, especially if substance abuse is present, and its medical management is generally unsatisfactory. The concept that pancreatic pain is related to increased pressure in the main pancreatic duct is unproven, and is not supported by the results of surgical intervention. Although pancreatic stenting is often technically succes

Illusory self-motion and motion sickness: a model for brain-gut interactions and nausea.

Motion sickness provides a unique setting for the study of nausea. Studies of illusory self-motion have linked nausea and objective measures of gastric dysrhythmias and the stress hormones vasopressin and epinephrine. Electrogastrographic methods utilize Ag-AgCl electrodes placed on the abdominal surface in the epigastric region to record electrogastrograms (EGGs), a noninvasive measure of gastric myoelectrical activity. The EGG frequencies of interest are the normal range (2.4-3.6 cpm), tachygastrias (3.6-9.9 cpm), and bradygastrias (1.0-2.4 cpm), and duodenal respiratory frequencies (10.0-15

Evaluating computed bony range of motion (BROM) by registering in-vitro cadaver-based functional range of motion (FROM) to a hip motion simulation.

BACKGROUND: While modern hip replacement planning relies on hip motion simulation (HMS), it lacks the capability to include soft-tissues and ligaments restraints on computed bony range of motion (BROM), often leading to an overestimation of the in-vivo functional range of motion (FROM). Furthermore, there is a lack of literature on BROM assessment in relation to FROM. Therefore, the study aimed to assess computed BROM using in-vitro cadaver-derived FROM measurements, registered to a CT-based in-house HMS, and to further investigate the effect of functional and anatomical hip joint centres (FHJ

Validating scapular motion measurements using an optical motion analyzer and gravity magnetic resonance imaging.

[Purpose] This study aimed to validate whether scapular motion measured using a pad with retroreflective markers and optical motion analyzer (VICON MX) can reflect the motion calculated by images using multi-posture (gravity) magnetic resonance imaging. [Participants and Methods] The participants were 12 healthy males (12 dominant-side shoulders). The measurement items were the scapular angle at shoulder flexion 140° and 160° and abduction 100°, 120°, 140°, and 160°. The scapular angle changes were extracted from the upward/downward and internal/external rotations. Angular changes were calcula

Wrist Motion Assessment in Tennis Players using Three-Dimensional Motion Capture and Dynamic Electromyography.

Background  Tennis players often present with ulnar-sided wrist pain, which may reflect repetitive stress and/or faulty mechanics. There is a role for investigating the biomechanics of tennis strokes and how they may relate to wrist pathology. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether three-dimensional motion capture technology and dynamic electromyography (EMG), when used to study groundstrokes in elite junior tennis players, reveals patterns of upper extremity motion that may correlate with the development of clinically relevant pathology. Case Description  Three-dimensional kinem

Reduced motion external defibrillation: Reduced subject motion with equivalent defibrillation efficiency validated in swine.

BACKGROUND: External defibrillators are used for arrhythmia cardioversion and for defibrillating during cardiac arrest. During defibrillation, short-duration biphasic pulses cause intense motion due to rapid chest-wall muscle contraction. A reduced motion external defibrillator (RMD) was constructed by integrating a commercial defibrillator with a Tetanizing-waveform generator. A long-duration, low-amplitude, tetanizing waveform slowly stimulated the chest musculature before the biphasic pulse, reducing muscle contraction during the shock. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate

Motion sickness susceptibility and visually induced motion sickness as diagnostic signs in Parkinson's disease.

Postural instability and loss of vestibular and somatosensory acuity can be part of the signs encountered in Parkinson's Disease (PD). Visual dependency is described in PD. These modifications of sensory input hierarchy are predictors of motion sickness (MS). The aim of this study was to assess MS susceptibility and effects of real induced MS in posture. 63 PD patients, whose medication levels (levodopa) reflected the pathology were evaluated, and 27 healthy controls, filled a MS questionnaire; 9 PD patients and 43 healthy controls were assessed by posturography using virtual reality. A Neural Model of MST and MT Explains Perceived Object Motion during Self-Motion.

UNLABELLED: When a moving object cuts in front of a moving observer at a 90° angle, the observer correctly perceives that the object is traveling along a perpendicular path just as if viewing the moving object from a stationary vantage point. Although the observer's own (self-)motion affects the object's pattern of motion on the retina, the visual system is able to factor out the influence of self-motion and recover the world-relative motion of the object (Matsumiya and Ando, 2009). This is achieved by using information in global optic flow (Rushton and Warren, 2005; Warren and Rushton, 2009;

Deficits of motion transparency perception in adult developmental dyslexics with normal unidirectional motion sensitivity.

We assessed motion integration ability in seven adult developmental dyslexics using unidirectional and bidirectional (transparent) random dot kinematograms (RDKs) that varied in the number of frames. All adult dyslexics performed as well as normally reading age-matched controls with unidirectional RDKs, regardless of frame number. However, using orthogonal motion transparent stimuli, deficits were obvious in six dyslexics and depended on frame number. Whereas controls needed on average only 4.4 frames (144 ms) to identify both directions correctly on 75% of presentations, dyslexics needed on a

Detection thresholds for object motion and self-motion during vestibular and visuo-oculomotor stimulation.

We compared the detection threshold for object motion with that of self-motion in space in healthy human subjects. Stimuli consisted of horizontal rotations of subjects' body with a fixation spot kept in fixed alignment with their heads (vestibular stimulus), rotation of the fixation spot relative to the stationary subjects (visuo-oculomotor stimulus), and a combination thereof by applying rotations of subjects body relative to the stationary object (sinusoidal oscillations, 0.025-0.4 Hz). Two series of experiments were performed. 1) One group of subjects was instructed to attend to, and to in

[The femoropatellar gliding motion during active knee stretching. Imaging using motion-triggered MR tomography].

By means of motion-triggered MRT it has been possible for the first time to demonstrate movements in the patello-femoral joint by means of MRT. Patello-femoral movement was studied during active extension of the knee between 30 degrees flexion and complete extension. The knees of 5 normal females and 7 normal males were studied together with 2 women with recurrent lateral patellar luxation. In normal women there was an average 16 degrees (10 to 18 degrees), in men an average of 12 degrees (10 to 14 degrees) of lateralisation of the patella during complete extension of the knee. In 1 patient th

Motion sickness induced by periodic accelerations: Effects of motion axis, frequency, and acceleration magnitude.

BackgroundCarsickness is a potential barrier to the acceptance of automated driving as it turns drivers into passengers, thus making them more susceptible to motion sickness. However, most of our current knowledge of how vehicle motion causes motion sickness comes from seasickness studies, using vertical motion only. Some more recent studies have investigated the relationship between horizontal accelerations and motion sickness, but with inconsistent methodology and sometimes conflicting results.ObjectiveTo quantify the effects of acceleration frequency and magnitude for periodic accelerations

Motion perception and biological motion processing in adults born with extremely low birth weight.

Individuals born with extremely low birth weight (ELBW, ≤ 1000 g) are at increased risk for long-term visual perceptual difficulties. Biological motion processing enables processing of animate and socially relevant movement. Studies of children born very preterm have found deficits in biological motion processing, but this has not previously been studied in adults born with ELBW. We compared biological and scrambled motion processing between ELBW and full-term controls and related motion processing with early neurodevelopmental level. Thirty-eight adults born ELBW and 29 controls from a region

An Upper Limb Exoskeleton Motion Generation Algorithm Based on Separating Shoulder and Arm Motion.

Many rehabilitation exoskeletons have been used in the field of stroke rehabilitation. Generating human-like motion is necessary for exoskeletons to help patients perform activities of daily living (ADL) while maintaining interaction quality and ergonomics. However, most of the current motion generation algorithms utilize inverse kinematics (IK) to solve the final configuration before generation, and do not consider the movement of shoulder girdle. Separately considering the shoulder girdle motion and arm motion, this paper proposes an algorithm integrated IK to generate human-like motion. The
