Validation of novel naturalistic limb movement stimuli for studying biological motion perception in adults.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding how we perceive and interpret the movements of other living beings is fundamental to social interaction, survival, and navigating our dynamic environment. Traditional studies of biological motion perception have predominantly employed simplified stimuli, such as point-light displays, which sacrifice ecological validity for experimental control. METHODS: To overcome this limitation, we created a novel stimulus set featuring naturalistic videos of isolated hand and leg movements. These stimuli incorporated variations in viewing perspective (first-person vs. third-per

Shared and Unique Neural Codes for Biological Motion Perception in Humans and Macaque Monkeys.

Throughout evolution, living organisms have honed the ability to swiftly recognize biological motion (BM) across species. However, how the brain processes within- and cross-species BM, and the evolutionary progression of these processes, remain unclear. To investigate these questions, the current study examined brain activity in the lateral temporal areas of humans and monkeys as they passively observed upright and inverted human and macaque BM stimuli. In humans, the middle temporal area (hMT+) responded to both human and macaque BM stimuli, while the right posterior superior temporal sulcus

Visual area V5/hMT+ contributes to perception of tactile motion direction: a TMS study.

Human imaging studies have reported activations associated with tactile motion perception in visual motion area V5/hMT+, primary somatosensory cortex (SI) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC; Brodmann areas 7/40). However, such studies cannot establish whether these areas are causally involved in tactile motion perception. We delivered double-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) while moving a single tactile point across the fingertip, and used signal detection theory to quantify perceptual sensitivity to motion direction. TMS over both SI and V5/hMT+, but not the PPC site, significant

Abnormal Size-Dependent Modulation of Motion Perception in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Excitation/Inhibition (E/I) imbalance in neural networks is now considered among the core neural underpinnings of autism psychopathology. In motion perception at least two phenomena critically depend on E/I balance in visual cortex: spatial suppression (SS), and spatial facilitation (SF) corresponding to impoverished or improved motion perception with increasing stimuli size, respectively. While SS is dominant at high contrast, SF is evident for low contrast stimuli, due to the prevalence of inhibitory contextual modulations in the former, and excitatory ones in the latter case. Only one previ

Improved motion perception and impaired spatial suppression following disruption of cortical area MT/V5.

As stimulus size increases, motion direction of high-contrast patterns becomes increasingly harder to perceive. This counterintuitive behavioral result, termed "spatial suppression," is hypothesized to reflect center-surround antagonism-a receptive field property ubiquitous in sensory systems. Prior research proposed that spatial suppression of motion signals is a direct correlate of center-surround antagonism within cortical area MT. Here, we investigated whether human MT/V5 is indeed causally involved in spatial suppression of motion signals. The key assumption is that a disruption of neural

Perception of apparent motion in depth: a high-density electrical mapping study in humans.

We evaluated brain activity using 64-channel visual evoked potentials (VEPs) while subjects perceived apparent motion in depth. Checkerboard patterns (CBPs) within small and large circles were presented in turn as experimental conditions. Motion in depth was perceived when the CBP in the large circle was coarser than in the small circle; when coarseness did not change, no motion in depth was perceived. As control conditions only fine or coarse CBPs were presented. We used ANOVA to compare VEPs associated with experimental vs. control conditions and with coarse vs. fine CBPs. Negative potential

Brain idiosyncrasy during biological-motion perception is amplified in autistic individuals with intellectual impairment.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging research in autism spectrum condition (ASC) often overlooks brain idiosyncrasy by focusing on group averages and frequently excludes individuals with co-occurring intellectual impairment (II). METHODS: We investigated functional MRI correlates of passive biological motion (BM) perception, comparing typically developing controls (TDC; n = 33), autistic individuals without II (intellectually able; ASC-IA; n = 28), and autistic individuals with II (ASC-II; n = 19; defined by IQ or adaptive function < 85). RESULTS: While standard group-average analyses revealed the expecte

The Goal Bias Emerges During Motion Event Perception and Affects Language Production and Memory.

There is an asymmetry between the origin (Source; move from X…) and end-point (Goal; …to Y) of motion events in both language and memory: Goals are mentioned more often and remembered more accurately than Sources. Here, we pursue the hypothesis that this Goal bias emerges as an online attentional bias that occurs during event apprehension and itself connects to event memory and linguistic measures. We record participants' eye movements as they view or prepare to describe motion events and later test their memory of Goals or Sources. We find an online attentional bias for Goals over Sources dur

Cortical Motion Perception Emerges from Dimensionality Reduction with Evolved Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity Rules.

The nervous system is under tight energy constraints and must represent information efficiently. This is particularly relevant in the dorsal part of the medial superior temporal area (MSTd) in primates where neurons encode complex motion patterns to support a variety of behaviors. A sparse decomposition model based on a dimensionality reduction principle known as non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) was previously shown to account for a wide range of monkey MSTd visual response properties. This model resulted in sparse, parts-based representations that could be regarded as basis flow fields

Limb apparent motion perception: Modification by tDCS, and clinically or experimentally altered bodily states.

Limb apparent motion perception (LAMP) refers to the illusory visual perception of a moving limb upon observing two rapidly alternating photographs depicting the same limb in two different postures. Fast stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) induce the more visually guided perception of physically impossible movements. Slow SOAs induce the perception of physically possible movements. According to the motor theory of LAMP, the latter perception depends upon the observer's sensorimotor representations. Here, we tested this theory in two independent studies by performing a central (study 1) and peri

Neural communication through theta-gamma cross-frequency coupling in a bistable motion perception task.

Functional significance of the neural oscillations has been debated since long. In particular, oscillations have been suggested to play a major role in formation of communication channels between brain regions. It has been previously suggested that gamma coherence increases during communication between hemispheres when subjects perceive a horizontal motion in Stroboscopic Alternative Motion (SAM) stimulus. In addition, disruption of this coherence may change the horizontal perception of SAM. In this study, we investigated the changes of Cross-Frequency Coupling (CFC) in EEG signals from pariet

The visual perception of natural motion: abnormal task-related neural activity in DYT1 dystonia.

Although primary dystonia is defined by its characteristic motor manifestations, non-motor signs and symptoms have increasingly been recognized in this disorder. Recent neuroimaging studies have related the motor features of primary dystonia to connectivity changes in cerebello-thalamo-cortical pathways. It is not known, however, whether the non-motor manifestations of the disorder are associated with similar circuit abnormalities. To explore this possibility, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to study primary dystonia and healthy volunteer subjects while they performed a motion pe

Global motion perception deficits in autism are reflected as early as primary visual cortex.

Individuals with autism are often characterized as 'seeing the trees, but not the forest'-attuned to individual details in the visual world at the expense of the global percept they compose. Here, we tested the extent to which global processing deficits in autism reflect impairments in (i) primary visual processing; or (ii) decision-formation, using an archetypal example of global perception, coherent motion perception. In an event-related functional MRI experiment, 43 intelligence quotient and age-matched male participants (21 with autism, age range 15-27 years) performed a series of coherent

Audio-visual interactions for motion perception in depth modulate activity in visual area V3A.

Multisensory signals can enhance the spatial perception of objects and events in the environment. Changes of visual size and auditory intensity provide us with the main cues about motion direction in depth. However, frequency changes in audition and binocular disparity in vision also contribute to the perception of motion in depth. Here, we presented subjects with several combinations of auditory and visual depth-cues to investigate multisensory interactions during processing of motion in depth. The task was to discriminate the direction of auditory motion in depth according to increasing or d

A neural model of smooth pursuit control and motion perception by cortical area MST.

Smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEMs) are eye rotations that are used to maintain fixation on a moving target. Such rotations complicate the interpretation of the retinal image, because they nullify the retinal motion of the target, while generating retinal motion of stationary objects in the background. This poses a problem for the oculomotor system, which must track the stabilized target image while suppressing the optokinetic reflex, which would move the eye in the direction of the retinal background motion (opposite to the direction in which the target is moving). Similarly, the perceptual

Differential effects of shared attention on perception of heading and 3-D object motion.

When a person moves in a straight line through a stationary environment, the images of object surfaces move in a radial pattern away from a single point. This point, known as the focus of expansion (FOE), corresponds to the person's direction of motion. People judge their heading from image motion quite well in this situation. They perform most accurately when they can see the region around the FOE, which contains the most useful information for this task. Furthermore, a large moving object in the scene has no effect on observer heading judgments unless it obscures the FOE. Therefore, observer

The characteristics of interaction between color and motion perception in primary open angle glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To investigate the characteristics of interaction between color and motion perception in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and measure motion perception of B, G and R cones, thus find a more sensitive method to diagnose the visual nerve damage in POAG. METHODS: Motion perceptions of B, G and R cones were isolated by blue, green and red vertical line stimulus displayed on the yellow, purple and blue background respectively, then measured the displacement threshold and flicking threshold of motion perception from each cones in POAG, and compared it with the age-match normals. Activation of area V5 by visual perception of motion demonstrated with echoplanar MR imaging.

Cortical activation in visual association areas known to be responsible for the perception of motion was investigated in two volunteers who viewed a projected animated cartoon periodically "run" and "frozen" during collection of echoplanar MR images. Ten axial, contiguous, 5 mm thick, T2-weighted, gradient-echo images (TE 40 ms, TR 3000 ms) depicting BOLD contrast were acquired through the occipital lobe using a GE Signa 1.5 T system with an advanced NMR operating console. Images were analysed by time series regression modelling estimating power in the MR signal at the ON-OFF frequency of moti

[Ambulatory autonomy and visual motion perception in a case of almost total cortical blindness].

A 37-year-old man experienced cortical blindness following a bilateral stroke in the territory of the posterior cerebral arteries. Four years later, the measurement of visual field defects (Goldmann perimeter) showed persistence of bilateral blindness with a 2-degree preservation of macular vision and a perifoveal sparing between 10 to 30 degrees of eccentricity in the left inferior quadrant. Despite this visual impairment, the subject was able to perform visually-guided locomotion. Moreover he consciously perceived visual motion in the blind parts of his visual field. CT and MRI showed a lesi

Differential effects of ambivalent visual-vestibular-somatosensory stimulation on the perception of self-motion.

The direction of perceived self-motion was determined as a function of combined visual-vestibular and vestibulo-somatosensory stimulations about the earth's vertical z-axis by means of a rotary chair and drum system. The predominant influence of concurrent antagonistic vestibular stimulation on circular vection (CV) even at small accelerations has been demonstrated by several studies in the past. The results of the present paper do not confirm the generally assumed influence of the vestibular system on exocentric motion perception, but instead produce evidence of the dominance of the visual ch
