A national questionnaire survey on knee manipulation following total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Adequate range of knee motion is critical for successful total knee arthroplasty. While aggressive physical therapy is an important component, manipulation may be a necessary supplement. There seems to be a lack of consensus with variable practices existing in managing stiff postoperative knees following arthroplasty. Hence we aim to determine the current practice and trend among knee surgeons throughout the United Kingdom. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Postal questionnaires were sent out to 100 knee surgeons registered with British Association of Knee Surgeons, ensuring that the whole o

Onset of Berger disease after Staphylococcus aureus infection: septic arthritis after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Septic arthritis is rare in patients undergoing knee arthroscopic surgery. If the infection is due to Staphylococcus aureus, patients might experience fever, severe clinical syndromes, and extra-articular manifestations, including vasculitis and glomerulonephritis. We describe a case of onset of immunoglobulin A nephropathy (Berger disease) after S aureus septic arthritis complicating an anterior cruciate ligament surgical reconstruction. The patient had no previous history of renal disease, and renal function returned to normal after resolution of the knee infection. S aureus infection has be

Toward an epidemiology of poststroke spasticity.

Poststroke spasticity (PSS)-related disability is emerging as a significant health issue for stroke survivors. There is a need for predictors and early identification of PSS in order to minimize complications and maladaptation from spasticity. Reviewing the literature on stroke and upper motor neuron syndrome, spasticity, contracture, and increased muscle tone measured with the Modified Ashworth Scale and the Tone Assessment Scale provided data on the dynamic time course of PSS. Prevalence estimates of PSS were highly variable, ranging from 4% to 42.6%, with the prevalence of disabling spastic

Elbow arthroscopy: surgical techniques and rehabilitation.

Elbow arthroscopy allows for direct visualization into the elbow joint, minimizes the potential for postoperative edema and discomfort, as well as protects the ligamentous structures. Arthroscopic procedures for the elbow and postoperative management are described for patients who have undergone loose body removal, synovectomy, and capsulectomy. The effect of early mobilization on the elbow complex and the role that splinting may play, as well as the controversies surrounding the use of continuous passive motion are discussed. Arthroscopy can significantly reduce the time frame, as well as imp

[Continuous Passive Motion in Orthopaedic Rehabilitation of the Shoulder Girdle - A Literature Survey].

BACKGROUND: Continuous passive motion (CPM) of the shoulder is predominantly used during postoperative rehabilitation of the shoulder girdle. It is often used after rotator cuff repair (RM suture). Incapacity to work and therapy of shoulder diseases cause significant costs for the healthcare system in Germany. METHODS: In a literature analysis, studies and reviews of the CPM treatment in scientific databases were therefore identified and analysed with regard to the functional outcome particular after shoulder joint surgery. The quality of the studies was evaluated using the Cochrane Collabora

[Treatment of chondral lesions from knee injuries in the professional soccer players. Review of 34 cases].

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the results of Pridie chondroplasty as an efficient treatment to recover the complete activity in soccer players and compare this with others chondral repair techniques. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The patients were professional soccer players, all with a knee cartilage injury treated with the Pridie technique in an arthroscopic surgery between March 1999--December 2004. The age of the patients and the presence of a simple meniscal tear wasn't a fact to exclude a patient. Complex meniscal tear and a ACL rupture were an exclusion criteria. We deferred the support by 6 to 8 weeks.
