A descriptive epidemiologic study utilizing a multi-disciplinary reporting format was undertaken to assess the impact of helmet usage on motorcycle trauma in North Dakota from 1977 through 1980. This approach yielded an 82.6% reporting increase compared to previous data collection techniques. More than 60% of the 2,934 crashes involved unhelmeted cyclists. Two-thirds of all crashes resulted in injury, with head, neck, and face (HNF) trauma accounting for 21.4% of all lesions. Compared to their helmeted counterparts, helmetless riders suffered HNF trauma 2.30 times as often, and were 3.19 times

BACKGROUND: On August 15, 2004, Louisiana's universal motorcycle helmet mandate was reinstated. Previous studies have shown that mortality and morbidity of motorcycle riders who crashed had increased during the 5 years the mandate was repealed. The objective of this study was to discern whether the reinstatement of the universal helmet mandate has resulted in a subsequent decrease in motorcycle-related mortality and morbidity in the state of Louisiana.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed observing the regularity of helmet use and the associated morbidity and mortality of motorcycl

Data from the Swedish Hospital Discharge Registry were analysed, years 1987-1994 inclusive. The registry includes all living patients admitted to Swedish hospitals. Patients admitted after moped or motor-cycle accidents were studied. A total of 4,716 mopedists and 8,927 motor-cycle riders were admitted in the given time frame. The median age of mopedists was 16 and that of motor-cycle riders 22 years. 85% of mopedists were male, while 95% of motor-cycle drivers and 55% of motor-cycle passengers were male. The injury distribution in both groups was quite similar with fractures and cerebral conc

Two-wheelers, including motorcycles, account for a significant portion of road traffic fatalities. Although several measures, including alcohol and helmet legislation, have been established, mortality rates remain high, specifically in low- and middle-income countries. This systematic review aims to identify and synthesize factors associated with fatal outcomes in motorcycle crashes. We conducted a systematic search across PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science from 2014 to April 2026. The studies included were observational (cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional) and examined fatal motorcycle

OBJECTIVE: Motorcycle (MC) rear-end collisions cause many serious injuries and deaths for MC riders. In Thailand, the MC crash investigation data revealed that 18% of all MC crashes were rear-end collisions, which accounted for 18% of all fatalities as well. The aim of this study was to investigate the causes of injuries and deaths from MC rear-end collisions and factors that contribute to their severity level. Between 2016 and 2020, 141 MC rear-end crashes were thoroughly investigated throughout Thailand.
METHOD: The ordinal logistic analysis was conducted to analyze factors contributing to

Motorcyclists are at high risk of head injuries, including skull fractures, focal brain injuries, intracranial bleeding and diffuse brain injuries. New helmet technologies have been developed to mitigate head injuries in motorcycle collisions, but there is limited information on their performance under commonly occurring oblique impacts. We used an oblique impact method to assess the performance of seven modern motorcycle helmets at five impact locations. Four helmets were fitted with rotational management technologies: a low friction layer (MIPS), three-layer liner system (Flex) and dampers-c

INTRODUCTION: An essential aspect of motorcycle rider education is how the instructor selection process impacts student learning, sometimes referred to as the human element, as it is a significant factor influencing curriculum success. Student and program achievements are partially contingent on instructors who understand the curriculum and facilitate student learning during instruction. Previous research on motorcycle rider education has emphasized a need for the examination of instructor selection and development, stating that quality education is reliant on instructors who are competent and

Developing countries are subject to increased motorization, particularly in the number of motorcycles. As helmet use is critical to the safety of motorcycle riders, the goal of this study was to identify observable patterns of helmet use, which allow a more accurate assessment of helmet use in developing countries. In a video based observation study, 124,784 motorcycle riders were observed at seven observation sites throughout Myanmar. Recorded videos were coded for helmet use, number of riders on the motorcycle, rider position, gender, and time of day. Generally, motorcycle helmet use in Myan

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data relating to Professional Motorcycle Speedway riders physical characteristics despite its growing popularity.
METHODS: The participants were divided into two categories depending on their Calculated Match Average (CMA); high performers (CMA>5.0, N.=16) and low performers (CMA<4.9, N.=16). Anthropometric data, isometric hand grip strength, isometric knee extension strength, dynamic stability of the upper and lower limbs and functional movement scores were measured to establish differences between high and low performing professional speedway riders.

Objective: To investigate trends of motorcyclist fatalities and identify at-risk populations by motorcyclist demographics and crash characteristics. Methods: We used the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) database (2000-2016) to track fatality rate trends, which were quantified by using Poisson mixed-effects regression models comparing 2000-2001 and 2007-2008, as well as 2009-2010 and 2015-2016. Results: The overall fatality rate per 100,000 population increased from 2000 to 2016, defined by two trend lines-before and after the economic recession in 2008-2009. The overall fatality rate

Motorcycle and moped injuries remain a significant cause of motor-vehicle related morbidity and mortality. There is a paucity of literature describing the skeletal injuries of moped riders and how these compare to those of motorcyclists, however. This study seeks to examine the skeletal injuries sustained in such incidents and determine if there are significant differences. Hospitalized riders injured on powered two-wheeled vehicles (PTW) between 2004 and 2007 were entered into a registry along with their presentation and clinical course. This registry was sorted by PTW type. Riders with injur

This study analyses fatal crash patterns, and identifies the risk factors contributing to motorcycle versus non-motorcycle fatal crashes using binomial logistic regression on two-, four- and six-lane National Highways (NHs) in India utilizing police fatal crash data. The distribution of victims' mode by striking vehicles shows that percentage share of striking vehicles (truck) against the victims' vehicles (motorcycle) is 44%, 52% and 37% on two-lane NH-8, four-lane NH-24 and six-lane NH-1, respectively. Nine explanatory variables pertaining to fatal crash, victim, roadway and environment are
