Nutmeg Poisoning With Electrolyte Abnormalities: A Case Report.

Nutmeg is a commonly used spice that contains myristicin, a compound with anticholinergic and psychoactive properties. Excessive consumption can lead to toxicity, causing psychiatric and anticholinergic symptoms such as tachycardia, dizziness, dry mouth, tremors, and nausea. Nutmeg poisoning is rare and not widely recognized. This report describes the case of a 33-year-old woman who accidentally ingested a toxic amount of nutmeg while cooking. She presented with symptoms of dry mouth, tremors, dizziness, and anxiety and was subsequently diagnosed with nutmeg poisoning. Blood tests revealed ele

Schimmelpenning Syndrome with Large Nevus Sebaceous and Multiple Epidermal Nevi.

Epidermal nevus syndromes are a group of rare multiorgan disorders. Schimmelpenning syndrome is a clinical variant of epidermal nevus syndromes. This congenital syndrome is characterized by the existence of nevus sebaceous and usually accompanied by abnormalities of the eyes, skeletal, cardiovascular, and central nervous systems. A 2-year-old girl presented with large, hairless, yellowish-brown plaques on the scalp and face along with multiple brownish-black verrucose plaques and brownish-black macules on almost all parts of the body. The skin-colored verrucose tumors were also found on the li

MRI evaluation of the temporomandibular joints in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: a retrospective review.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the MRI findings of children with rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) affecting the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) and correlate these findings with symptoms. MRI studies of the TMJ in 26 children with a clinical diagnosis of JRA were retrospectively reviewed. All studies included oblique and sagittal T1, T2*, proton density/T2, and coronal T1-weighted images. T1 and proton density/T2-images were repeated with the mouth open. Post contrast sagittal and coronal T1-images were obtained in 19 patients. All studies were done on either 1.5 Tesla or 3.0 Tesla units w

[The use of panoramic radiograph to observe abnormal movement of condyle].

The abnormal movement of mandible is one of the three chief symptoms of TMJDS, it is described usually by the degree and type of mouth opening. We use close and open mouth position panoramic radiographs of 144 cases with TMJDS to observe the relationship between the head of condyle and the articular eminence. It can show the different degrees of movement of condyle and the degree of movement of both sides to see they are in balance or not. We classified the movement of the condyle in to six types, and measure the degree of mouth opening on the same film. The rela-tionship between the result of

Mouth breathing, "nasal disuse," and pediatric sleep-disordered breathing.

BACKGROUND: Adenotonsillectomy (T&A) may not completely eliminate sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), and residual SDB can result in progressive worsening of abnormal breathing during sleep. Persistence of mouth breathing post-T&As plays a role in progressive worsening through an increase of upper airway resistance during sleep with secondary impact on orofacial growth. METHODS: Retrospective study on non-overweight and non-syndromic prepubertal children with SDB treated by T&A with pre- and post-surgery clinical and polysomnographic (PSG) evaluations including systematic monitoring of mouth br

Birth Defect Co-Occurrence Patterns Among Infants With Cleft Lip and/or Palate.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate 2- to 5-way patterns of defects co-occurring with orofacial clefts using data from a population-based registry. DESIGN: We used data from the Texas Birth Defects Registry for deliveries between 1999 and 2014 to Texas residents, including 1884 cases with cleft palate (CP) and 5289 cases with cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL±P) without a known syndrome. We identified patterns of defects co-occurring with CP and with CL±P observed more frequently than would be expected if these defects occurred independently. We calculated adjusted observed-to-expected (O/E) r

Fifteen-minute consultation: the infant with a tongue tie.

Tongue tie is an increasingly common cause for referral of infants to our general paediatric surgery service. In this article, we will explore the indications for tongue tie division in the newborn child, the practicalities of the procedure and the supporting evidence.

Developing a nurse-delivered frenulotomy service.

OBJECTIVES: Tongue tie (ankyloglossia) describes a short lingual frenulum that can lead to breastfeeding difficulties. It affects between 4% and 10% of infants and can be treated by frenulotomy. We developed a nurse-delivered frenulotomy service at a tertiary pediatric hospital and audited our results. STUDY DESIGN: Observational study. SETTING: Tertiary pediatric hospital. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: An outpatient tongue tie clinic was set up by an ear, nose, and throat consultant. Tongue tie division was undertaken using a standard technique without the need for anesthesia or analgesia, as per

Part 1. Understanding the embryology and genetics of cleft lip and palate.

Craniofacial birth defects are the fourth most common congenital anomaly in newborns. Cleft lip and cleft palate (CL/CP) are the most common and immediately recognizable craniofacial anomalies. Some are diagnosed prenatally on ultrasound; more often, they are first noted in the delivery room. The infant may have a cleft that is unilateral, bilateral, complete, or incomplete, and it may involve the lip only, the palate only, or both. Cleft lip and/or cleft palate are often isolated nonsyndromic occurrences; however, when associated with other abnormal physical findings, a recognizable syndrome

Unique dentition of lungfish.

Lungfish are a group of ancient fish, represented almost continuously in the fossil record from their first appearance in the Devonian to the present time. They have numerous unique characters in the dentition, found only among lungfish, as well as some that are shared with other groups of fish and with higher vertebrates, such as a thin layer of true enamel, instead of the enameloid found in the dentition of most fish. Unique characters include the diversity of forms of dentine in the tooth plates, as well as the organisation of the dentines and the unusual mode of continuous growth of the de

A Rare Case of Tamarind Seed Induced Oral Submucous Fibrosis in a 12-Year-Old Indian Boy.

Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic debilitating, potentially malignant disorder of the oral cavity. It is characterized by restricted mouth opening which results due to abnormal accumulation of collagen in the sub-epithelial layers leading to dense fibrous bands in the mouth. The pathogenesis of the disease is believed to be multifactorial. However, literature reports suggest a strong association of OSMF and arecanut chewing habit. The present paper presents a case of OSMF in a 12-year-old boy without arecanut chewing habit, but with a heavy practice of chewing tamarind seeds.

Congenital dilatation of the submandibular duct.

Congenital dilatation of the submandibular duct also known as imperforate submandibular duct is a rare condition of unknown etiology, clinically characterized as a well-defined, fluctuant swelling in the floor of the mouth, and microscopically defined as a cystic cavity covered with pseudostratified columnar epithelium consistent with a dilated salivary duct. A 1-month-old female presented with a translucent, smooth cystic swelling in the floor of the mouth causing breastfeeding difficulty. The lesion was surgically excised and microscopically, a cystic cavity lined with pseudostratified colum

A systematic review of the oral and craniofacial manifestations of cri du chat syndrome.

Cri du chat syndrome is an autosomal disorder. Because it affects few people in the population it is considered a rare disease, yet it is one of the most common autosomal chromosomal syndromes in humans. It entails pathognomonic alterations that affect the craniofacial and oral anatomy of patients. The aim of this study is to review these craniofacial and oral abnormalities in patients with Cri du chat syndrome. The PubMed Medline database was searched using two different strategies. First, we used "Dentistry" and "Cri du chat" as keywords; second, we used "Cri du chat" and "craniofacial." Sev
