Mixed anaerobic-aerobic infections may occur in a variety of anatomical locations and are usually related to the spread of bacteria from a proximal mucosal surface. Much has been learned about the pathophysiology and treatment of mixed anaerobic-aerobic infections from the study of intra-abdominal sepsis related to spillage of colonic contents. There is an average of five microorganisms at the infected site: three anaerobic and two aerobic pathogens. In a thirty months prospective study, 61 patients treated in an Intensive Care Unit received erythromycin (E) (3 g/24 h) and latamoxef (L) (2 g/24 h) as soon as acute peritonitis was surgically confirmed. Five days later, E + L were stopped and nitro-imidazol (NI) was prescribed while searching for a possible infection. We studied 50 strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) isolated from 50 patients with hospital-acquired bacteraemia, identified by prospective surveillance at the University of Virginia Hospital between March 1981 and September 1982. The in-vitro activity (as measured by geometric mean MICs, mg/l) of Sch 34343 against aerobic and anaerobic bacteria was compared with that of 14 other selected beta-lactam antibiotics including aztreonam, latamoxef (moxalactam), ceftazidime and imipenem. 18 neonates with bacteriologically confirmed Flavobacterium meningitis and ventriculitis were treated with various antibiotic regimens, including the use of intraventricular antibiotics. Cefmenoxime, a new semisynthetic third-generation cephalosporin, was evaluated in 105 patients (45 men and 60 women) with the following infections: skin or skin structure (33), pulmonary (22), urinary tract (30), and septicemia (20). One hundred and two febrile episodes in neutropenic patients were treated with intravenous tobramycin and latamoxef.
