The effects of peer education on STD and AIDS knowledge among prisoners in Mozambique.

The study was designed to evaluate the impact of education on AIDS knowledge among prison inmates in Maputo, Mozambique. A 6-month follow-up study was carried out in 1993 among 300 prisoners. A knowledge, attitudes, and practices questionnaire regarding AIDS and STD was administered to each subject as part of the intake medical examination and after an educational intervention provided by 30 prisoner 'activists'. A large proportion of prisoners had high risk behaviours (65% had 2 or more sexual partners per month and 39% had a history of STD) and low AIDS knowledge at incarceration. Statistica

Child and maternal mortality during a period of conflict in Beira City, Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Child mortality rates have been declining in most developing countries. We studied child and maternal mortality risk factors for child mortality in Beira city in July 1993, after a decade of conflict in Mozambique. METHODS: A community-based cluster sample survey of 4609 women of childbearing age was conducted. Indirect techniques were used to estimate child mortality ('children ever born' method and Preceding Birth Techniques (PBT) and maternal mortality (sisterhood method). Deaths among the most recent born child, born since July 1990, were classified as cases (n = 106), and two

A comparative study of caesarean deliveries by assistant medical officers and obstetricians in Mozambique.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcome of caesarean delivery performed by assistant medical officers and specialists in obstetrics and gynaecology with particular attention to post-operative complications. DESIGN: We performed a nonrandomised analysis of 2071 consecutive caesarean deliveries at Maputo Central Hospital. Of these, 958 (46.3%) were performed by assistant medical officers (medical assistants trained for surgery) and the rest (53.7%) by specialists in obstetrics and gynaecology. The age and parity distributions of women in the two groups were almost identical. SETTING: University Hos

HIV-1 reservoir evolution in infants infected with clade C from Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: The persistence of HIV-1-infected cells during antiretroviral therapy is well documented but may be modulated by early initiation of antiretroviral therapy in infants. METHODS: Here, we longitudinally analyzed the proviral landscape in nine infants with vertical HIV-1 infection from Mozambique over a median period of 24 months, using single-genome, near full-length, next-generation proviral sequencing. RESULTS: We observed a rapid decline in the frequency of intact proviruses, leading to a disproportional under-representation of intact HIV-1 sequences within the total number of H

Adherence to COVID-19 Preventive Measures in Mozambique: Two Consecutive Online Surveys.

We assessed adherence to government recommendations implemented shortly after the introduction of COVID-19 in Mozambique in March 2020, through two online cross-sectional surveys in April and June 2020. We quantified adherence to preventive measures by a composite score comprising of five measures: physical distancing, face mask use, hand hygiene, cough hygiene, and avoidance of touching the face. 3770 and 1115 persons participated in the first and second round respectively. Wearing face masks, regular handwashing and cough hygiene all reached compliance rates of over 90% while physical distan

Mortality before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Manhiça district, Southern Mozambique.

INTRODUCTION: Mozambique reported its first COVID-19 case in March 2020, and the pandemic exposed significant vulnerabilities in its healthcare system. Measuring mortality attributable to COVID-19 in Mozambique, has been challenging due to limitations in health information systems and incomplete death documentation outside health facilities. By mid-2023, a total of 2,234 deaths from 233,334 cases were confirmed but the figures can be much higher.  METHODS : We conducted a trend analysis of mortality using data from the Manhiça Health and Demographic Surveillance System from the periods before

Domestic and International Health Expenditure and Health and Healthcare Use: Evidence From Mozambique.

Evidence on the relationship between public health expenditure and health is mixed and particularly scarce for low-income countries. Existing studies overlook the subnational distribution of expenditure and rarely distinguish between sources and governance over funding. We estimated the relationship between three types of health expenditure across 121 districts in Mozambique and multiple outcomes from 2008 to 2015. We generated a unique dataset covering individual outcomes from Demographic and Health Surveys and district-level domestic and international health expenditure, channelled to local

Cervical Cancer Outcomes in Mozambique: Impact of an International Gynecologic Oncology Training Program.

PURPOSE: Cervical cancer is the most common cancer among women in Mozambique and is a major health burden. Surgery for cervical cancer is currently performed at only one hospital in the country, Maputo Central Hospital. Before 2020, there were no gynecologists in Mozambique trained to care for women with cervical cancer. In 2017, the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) started a gynecologic oncology training program in Mozambique, and in 2020, the first three fellows graduated from this program. The main objective of this study was to report the outcomes of patients with cervical c

Snakebite in Nicoadala District, central Mozambique: a first assessment based on hospital records.

BACKGROUND: Despite the significant impact of snakebite on public health in the tropics, there is a notable lack of research on this topic in Mozambique. We present an assessment of snakebite incidence in Nicoadala District, central Mozambique. METHODS: We analysed hospital records of snakebite for a 6-y period (2015-2020). Data were obtained from registration books used in three health centres and descriptive statistics were generated to illustrate the results. RESULTS: Records document 430 reported cases of snakebite over the 6 y (71.7 per year). The highest incidence was in 2017 with 48.2

HIV-1 Antiretroviral Drug Resistance in Mozambique: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This systematic review assessed the prevalence of transmitted and acquired HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) and the associated risk factors in Mozambique. A search of the PubMed, Cochrane, B-On, and Scopus databases up to December 2023 was conducted and included 11 studies with 1118 HIV-1 pol sequences. Drug resistance mutations (DRMs) to NNRTIs were found in 13% of the drug-naive individuals and 31% of those on ART, while NRTI resistance occurred in 5% and 10%, respectively. Dual-class resistance (NNRTI + NRTI) was detected in 2% of the drug-naive and 8% of ART-experienced individuals. DRMs to pro

Immunogenicity of Reduced-Dose Monovalent Type 2 Oral Poliovirus Vaccine in Mocuba, Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: The monovalent type 2 oral poliovirus vaccine (mOPV2) stockpile is low. One potential strategy to stretch the existing mOPV2 supply is to administer a reduced dose: 1 drop instead of 2. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, controlled, open-label, noninferiority trial (10% margin) to compared immunogenicity after administration of 1 versus 2 drops of mOPV2. We enrolled 9-22-month-old infants from Mocuba district of Mozambique. Poliovirus neutralizing antibodies were measured in serum samples collected before and 1 month after mOPV2 administration. Immune response was defined as sero

Have You Heard of Schistosomiasis? Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices in Nampula Province, Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease which affects almost 300 million people worldwide each year. It is highly endemic in Mozambique. Prevention and control of schistosomiasis relies mainly on mass drug administration (MDA), as well as adoption of basic sanitation practices. Individual and community perceptions of schistosomiasis are likely to have a significant effect on prevention and control efforts. In order to establish a baseline to evaluate a community engagement intervention with a focus on schistosomiasis, a survey to determine knowledge, attitudes and practices relating

Skeletal tissues in Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) express the extracellular calcium-sensing receptor.

Molecular phylogenetic analysis suggests that the extracellular calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) emerged evolutionarily in association with the chordate-vertebrate lineage. Our studies overall explore the evolution of CaSRs, and the possible historical linkage of CaSRs to vertebrate skeleton as functional components of calcium homeostasis through regulated storage and/or release. We applied both reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) to evaluate Casr gene and CaSR protein expression, respectively, in skeletal tissues of a cichlid teleost, the Moz
