Reticular erythematous mucinosis associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

We report the case of a 56-year-old woman with reticular erythematous mucinosis (REM). During her workup infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was detected. She developed a cerebral toxoplasmosis, salmonella sp. bacteremia and oral ulcerations with the presence of type I herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus. The relation of REM with the deposition of mucin in AIDS patients' bone marrow and HIV infection is discussed. To our knowledge, this is the first report where REM is associated with HIV disease.

Reticular erythematous mucinosis syndrome associated with psoriasis-like eruptions.

We report a case of reticular erythematous mucinosis syndrome associated with psoriasis-like eruptions. Although the two skin diseases are clinically distinct, they may be related in some ways.

Acral ichthyosiform mucinosis in association with Sjögren's syndrome: a peculiar form of pretibial myxedema?

Two Japanese women developed well-demarcated ichthyosiform plaques on the lateral aspect of their lower legs. Deposition of mucin was demonstrated throughout the papillary dermis, unlike the site of mucin deposition seen in pretibial myxedema. Their thyroid function was normal. The condition of both women was complicated by Sjögren's syndrome. One of them who presented with positive anti-microsomal and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies had goiter, suggesting that her malady was also complicated by Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Their skin manifestations differed from those described in cutaneous mucinos

Scleromyxedema.

Scleromyxedema is a rare, cutaneous deposition disorder from the group of mucinoses, which can affect multiple organs and is virtually always associated with a monoclonal gammopathy. Cutaneous manifestations are usually generalized, 2 to 3 mm sized, dome-shaped or flat-topped, waxy, slightly red to skin-colored papules and sclerodermoid indurations. Neurological, rheumatological, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, respiratory tract, renal and ophthalmologic manifestations can occur, with decreasing frequency. A serious and potentially lethal complication is the dermato-neuro syndrome which mani

Histological aspects of rhinosinusal polyps.

UNLABELLED: Contemporary cohort cross-sectional study. INTRODUCTION: Despite its importance for an accurate diagnosis, histology differences among nasal polyps and its clinical implications are rarely reported in the literature. The existing papers classify polyp samples without concern for prior treatments, which could influence the results attained. AIMS: carry out a morphological study, through light microscopy, of nasal polyps' structural alterations in the absence of any type of prior treatment and histologically classify it in relation to studies published in the literature. Papulonodular mucinosis: a systematic review on clinicopathologic characteristics, course and treatment options.

Papulonodular mucinosis (PNM) is a rare cutaneous mucinosis recognized as a rare variant of lupus erythematosus. There are no large-scale cohort studies characterizing its clinicopathological features or evaluating the effectiveness of various treatment options. This study aimed to review the literature on PNMs to identify its clinical and histological features and treatment outcomes. The search includes studies from the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases up to the March 1, 2024. A total of 37 studies, encompassing 44 patients, were included in the review. Of these, 20 were males a

Case report and review of solitary cutaneous focal mucinosis: a unique primary cutaneous mucinosis unrelated to mucinosis-associated systemic diseases.

Localized deposition of mucin in the upper dermis is referred to as cutaneous focal mucinosis. Patients with this condition either present with a single skin lesion (solitary cutaneous focal mucinosis) or numerous skin lesions (multiple cutaneous focal mucinosis). A man with solitary cutaneous focal mucinosis is described and the features of this condition are reviewed. Solitary cutaneous focal mucinosis has a slight male predominance and typically presents in adults, ranging in age from 29 years to 60 years, as a nodule or papule that is flesh-colored or white and most commonly located on an

Reticular erythematous mucinosis on the midline of the back.

We report the case of a 51-year-old man who presented with reticular macular erythema and erythematous plaques on the midline of the back of 10 years' duration that seemed to worsen on exposure to sunlight. Based on the clinical and histopathologic findings, a diagnosis of reticular erythematous mucinosis (REM) was made. The patient was treated with hydroxychloroquine 400 mg daily and the lesions resolved by the end of the second week of therapy.

Beyond Classification: A Unique Case of Self-Resolving Cutaneous Mucinosis Associated With Streptococcal Infection in a Child.

A 3-year-old boy presented with an unusual combination of indurated skin, sclerotic plaques with lichenification, and yellowish papules. Histopathology revealed diffuse dermal mucin deposits, and laboratory tests showed a positive throat culture for Group A streptococcus and elevated serum anti-streptolysin titers. An 10-day course of oral amoxicillin was associated with near-complete resolution of all dermatological findings within 4 months. This case represents a unique presentation of a self-resolving cutaneous mucinosis, likely associated with a streptococcal infection.

Self-healing Cutaneous Mucinosis in Adulthood: The Adult Counterpart of the Juvenile Variant of the Disease?

Self-healing cutaneous mucinosis (SHCM) is an idiopathic localized cutaneous mucinosis mainly described in children and characterized clinically by an acute onset of papules and nodules that exhibit a spontaneous resolution in a period ranging from weeks to few months. Histologically, a diffuse mucin deposition in the dermis and/or hypodermis associated with a proliferation of spindle-shaped cells and some large epithelioid gangliocyte-like mononuclear cells is usually observed. An uncommon adult variant of SHCM has also been reported; however, the clinicopathological features described in the

Congenital cutaneous mucinosis with spontaneous regression: an atypical cutaneous mucinosis of infancy?

The nomenclature and classification of cutaneous mucinosis is quite complex. An updated classification of idiopathic cutaneous mucinosis (lichen myxoedematosus), included three clinicopathological subsets: a generalized papular and sclerodermoid form, a localized papular form, and an atypical or intermediate form. Cutaneous mucinosis occurring in infancy is very rare. We report a 7-month-old boy with a history of multiple opalescent papules over his fingers and toes since birth. The lesions spontaneously regressed and became indiscernible after 5 years of clinical follow-up. The condition was

[Medullar cancer of the thyroid associated with dermal mucinosis].

INTRODUCTION: Dermal mucinosis can be associated with numerous pathologies, in particular involving the thyroid, but has never been described in the case of a medullar cancer of the thyroid (MCT). CASE-REPORT: A 69-year-old man consulted for a facial erythrosis, which had been developing for a few weeks without any identified triggering factor. The skin biopsy showed dermal mucinosis and tests revealed a sporadic medullar cancer of the thyroid with secondary bone, ganglion and medullar localizations. DISCUSSION: The association between medullar cancer of the thyroid and dermal mucinosis has

[Extensive primary cutaneous mucinosis associated with refractory anemia with excess of blast].

BACKGROUND: We describe an original case of a primary cutaneous mucinosis, associated with a refractory anemia with excess of blast. CASE REPORT: A 65 year-old female consulted for erythematous-purple blush reticulated and large plaques that progressively developed on the trunk and limbs. Biopsies showed abundant dermis mucin deposits with a perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate. The epidermis was normal. Laboratory evaluation showed refractory anemia with excess of blast, associated with cytogenetic abnormalities. After two years course, the progressive aggravation of the myelodysplastic syndr
