A multivariate multilevel analysis of youth motor competence. The Peruvian Health and Optimist Growth Study.

We use a multivariate multilevel model to study the links between physical fitness (PF) and gross motor coordination (GMC) and investigate the influence of predictors affecting their levels across age. We sampled 7918 Peruvians, aged 6-15 years, from sea-level, Amazon region and high-altitude. Composite markers of GMC and PF were derived (GMCz and PFz , respectively). BMI, biological maturation, and stunting were assessed. School characteristics were obtained via an objective audit. School contexts explained 35% of the associations between PFz and GMCz , whereas children's characteristics expl

Childhood vitamin A capsule supplementation coverage in Nigeria: a multilevel analysis of geographic and socioeconomic inequities.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a huge public health burden among preschool-aged children in sub-Saharan Africa, and is associated with a high level of susceptibility to infectious diseases and pediatric blindness. We examined the Nigerian national vitamin A capsule (VAC) supplementation program, a short-term cost-effective intervention for prevention of VAD-associated morbidity for equity in terms of socioeconomic and geographic coverage. Using the most current, nationally representative data from the 2008 Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey, we applied multilevel regression analysis on 19,5

Economic inequality and undernutrition in women: multilevel analysis of individual, household, and community levels in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Many people in developing countries are still struggling to emerge from the realm of extreme poverty, where economic improvements tend to benefit a small, affluent group of the population and cause growing inequality in health and nutrition that affects the most vulnerable groups of the population, including women and children. OBJECTIVE: To examine how household and community economic inequality affects nutritional status in women using information on 6,922 nonpregnant women aged 15 to 49 years included in the 2000 Cambodia Demographic and Health Survey. METHODS: Nutritional sta

Psychological outcomes of primary-school physical education interventions: a systematic review and multilevel meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Physical education (PE) offers opportunities for psychological learning, but evidence of benefit depends on the outcome, design, and instructional context. METHODS: This systematic review and multilevel meta-analysis included 74 reports from 70 trial families of primary-school PE interventions. Four databases covered English-language reports published from January 2000 through 31 May 2026. Randomized and nonrandomized controlled studies were distinguished from uncontrolled pre -post and short-term within-child designs. Multilevel models addressed dependent effects, with trial-fa

How much is sexual minority stress confounded with familial causes? A systematic multilevel meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Compared with heterosexual persons, non-heterosexual persons have worse mental health. Sexual Minority Stress Theory (SMST) explains the disparity as resulting from stigma and discrimination. To the extent that heterosexual genetic relatives reared with non-heterosexual persons also have worse mental health, SMST is falsified. We conducted a systematic meta-analysis of studies containing family-genetic comparison data to interrogate the empirical support for SMST. METHOD: We systematically identified 17 empirical studies in which twins or non-twin siblings reported on both their s

Sexual Partner Typologies Among Latino Men Living in Miami, Florida: A Multilevel Latent Class Analysis.

In the USA, Latino men are disproportionately affected by sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Characterizing the social context in which sexual behaviors occur, including substance use prior to sex and condomless sex, can inform prevention strategies. This paper presents an innovative analytic approach that blends multilevel latent class analysis (MLCA) with egocentric sexual network data to explore patterns of dyadic and personal characteristics of Latino men's sexual partners. From February 2022 to August 2023, social network data were collected fro

Propensity-matched analysis does not support angiosome-guided revascularization of multilevel peripheral artery disease (PAD).

BACKGROUND: This retrospective comparative cohort study evaluated the clinical outcome of angiosome-guided endovascular arterial reconstructions in chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) due to multilevel peripheral artery disease (PAD). METHODS: Patients treated in an endovascular fashion for CLTI with tissue loss due to multilevel PAD were analyzed. Limbs were classified as having undergone either angiosome-guided (direct) revascularization (DR) or nonangiosomic (indirect) revascularization (IR). DR was defined as uninterrupted in-line flow to the affected angiosome, revascularization thr

Do tribal children experience elevated risk of poor nutritional status in India? A multilevel analysis.

Economic progress in India over the past three decades has not been accompanied by a commensurate improvement in the nutritional status of children, and a disproportionate burden of undernutrition is still focused on socioeconomically disadvantaged populations in the poorest regions. This study examined the nutritional status of children under 3 years of age using data from the fourth round of Indian National Family Health Survey conducted in 2015-2016. Child undernutrition was assessed in a sample of 126,431 under-3 children using the anthropometric indices of stunting, underweight and wastin

Multilevel analysis of childhood nonviral gastroenteritis associated with environmental risk factors in Quebec, 1999-2006.

Childhood nonviral gastroenteritis is a priority for various public health authorities. Given that waterborne transmission is sometimes incriminated during investigation of gastroenteritis outbreaks, the authors hypothesized that watershed characteristics may influence the occurrence of this disease and could contribute additional insights for better prevention and control. The study described here aimed to investigate watershed characteristics in relation to nonviral gastroenteritis and specifically three bacterial and parasitic forms of childhood gastroenteritis to assess their relative impo

Marital conflict, sibling closeness, and youth adjustment in Mexican-origin families: A multilevel moderation analysis.

Marital conflict is a well-documented family stressor linked to youth maladjustment. However, limited research has examined protective factors that may buffer these effects in Mexican-origin families, where cultural values emphasizing familial harmony may intensify the negative impact of marital conflict. Guided by family systems theory, this multi-informant, longitudinal study investigated how mother- and father-reported marital conflict related to youth-reported adjustment and whether sibling closeness moderated these associations. Participants included 246 two-parent Mexican-origin families

Multilevel genome-wide analysis reveals shared genetic architecture between acute pancreatitis and body fat distribution.

BACKGROUND Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a heterogeneous inflammatory disease, and its risk and severity may be shaped more by body fat distribution than by overall obesity. However, the shared genetic basis between AP and depot-specific fat accumulation remains unclear. METHODS We meta-analyzed AP genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics from FinnGen, the Million Veteran Program, and the UK Biobank, including 18,045 cases and 1,285,319 controls. Four magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-derived fat distribution traits, namely intrapancreatic fat deposition (IPFD), liver fat (LF), visc

Association between emotion recognition and cognitive functioning in multiple sclerosis: a multilevel correlational meta-analysis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disease marked by both cognitive and socio-cognitive impairments, including difficulties in recognizing emotions. While deficits in processing speed, executive functions, and episodic memory are well known, growing evidence also points to impairments in emotion-recognition, particularly for negative emotions such as fear, sadness, or disgust. However, the extent to which these socio-cognitive difficulties are linked to broader cognitive dysfunction remains unclear, as individual studies report inconsistent findings. T
