ParkMAE: a cross-linguistic masked autoencoder framework for robust Parkinson's disease detection from speech.

We introduce ParkMAE, a robust multilingual speech foundation model and comprehensive benchmarking system for Parkinson's disease assessment. We curated multiple large-scale speech datasets comprising approximately 750 h of pretraining data and 100 h of evaluation data across four languages and diverse clinical populations. Our self-supervised masked autoencoder approach, pretrained on this multilingual corpus, demonstrates superior performance achieving 39% F1 score for cross-linguistic diagnosis, outperforming existing acoustic markers (eGeMAPS) by a significant margin and maintaining compar

Learning graphic symbols in two languages: Effects of monolingual teaching.

PURPOSE: Limited research exists to guide augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) intervention for children from multilingual backgrounds. When a graphic symbol-based AAC system is provided to children, they need to learn the meaning of the graphic symbols. This study determined the effect of teaching the association between a graphic symbol and a spoken word in one language on the ability of bilingual children without disabilities to transfer this learning to their second language. METHOD: A one-group pre-test-post-test design was used. The ability of 30 English-Afrikaans bilingual

The impacts of language background and language-related disorders in auditory processing assessment.

PURPOSE: To examine the impact of language background and language-related disorders (LRDs--dyslexia and/or language impairment) on performance in English speech and nonspeech tests of auditory processing (AP) commonly used in the clinic. METHOD: A clinical database concerning 133 multilingual children (mostly with English as an additional language) and 71 monolingual children (7- to 12-year-old native English speakers) with listening concerns was analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: Language background had no significant effect on the 3 nonspeech AP tests, but the multilingual group performed

Uncovering the effects of bilingual language control on rational decisions: An ERP study.

A growing body of research suggests that the language in which bilinguals make decisions affects the rationality of such decisions. Furthermore, bilinguals constantly confront cross-language interference that requires complex language control processes to resolve this competition. However, the relationship between language control and decision-making is unclear. In the current study, we analyze electrophysiological and behavior data elicited from two groups of Chinese-English bilinguals. One group was trained in intensive language switching and then completed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and t

Frequency and predictability effects in first and second language of different script bilinguals.

Reading efficiently in a second language (L2) is a crucial skill, but it is not universally achieved. Here we ask whether L2 reading efficiency is better captured as a language specific skill or whether it is mostly shared across L1 and L2, relying on general language abilities. To this end, we examined word frequency and predictability effects in sentence reading, and tested the same readers in L1 and L2, recording participants' eye-movements. Participants were 57 undergraduate bilingual speakers of Hebrew and English, languages that use different scripts, allowing for a clearer distinction b

The language dependency of /m/ in native Dutch and non-native English.

In forensic speaker comparisons, the current practice is to try to avoid comparisons between speech fragments in different languages. However, globalization requires an exploration of individual speech features that may show phonetic consistency across a speaker's languages. We predicted that the bilabial nasal /m/ may be minimally affected by the language spoken due to the involvement of the rigid nasal cavity in combination with a lack of fixed oral articulatory targets. The results show that indeed, L1 Dutch speakers (N = 53) had similar nasal formants and formant bandwidths when speaking i

Effects of Bilingualism on Students' Linguistic Education: Specifics of Teaching Phonetics and Lexicology.

In the study of English in a bylingual environment, issues related to the need to develop students' phonetic and lexical competencies, which include communication, phonetic and auditory skills and lexical sufficiency, are of particular relevance. The motive of this study is the need to improve the methodology of teaching English in the context of student immersion in a foreign language educational environment, by implementing additional thematic courses in the general educational program aimed at improving the phonetic and lexical competencies necessary for successful learning in a bilingual e

Emerging issues in Israel: commentaries in a global context.

Communication disorders in Israel is a well-established professional field, requiring academic training and dual certification in speech pathology and audiology. Entry level is a BA in communication disorders (comparable to a MA degree in the USA) and 1 year of work under supervision. It is possible to continue studies towards higher degrees (MA and PhD). We face the same problems as in the rest of the world with need for trained professionals in the social services and the need to deal with multilingual and multicultural issues.

Brain-structural differences underlying dialect competence in the bilingual network.

Research in multilingualism has provided evidence for brain structural differences between monolinguals and bilinguals. Less is known about speakers who, apart from a standard language, also show competence in a variety (dialect) of this language ("bidialectals"). In these populations, cultural differences are minimized and language competence can be compared against a common ground. We hypothesize that bidialectals show brain-structural differences to non-bidialectals, and capitalize on one of the world's largest dialect corpus available for German. A competent dialect group (N = 26) and a gr

Neurocognitive mechanisms of mathematics vocabulary processing in L1 and L2 in South African first graders: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

SIGNIFICANCE: To learn mathematics, young children require accurate interpretations of mathematics vocabulary. When school language differs from children's home language, mathematics performance often decreases. Little is known about cortical activation during mathematics vocabulary processing in different languages. Although behavioral data highlight a difference in L1 and L2 mathematics learning, neuroimaging insights will help us to better understand how and why there is a difference in children's mathematical learning in multilingual societies. AIM AND APPROACH: We investigated behavioral

Unilateral cortical hyperexcitability in congenital hydrocephalus: a TMS study.

INTRODUCTION: Changes in cortical excitability are considered to play an important role in promoting brain plasticity both in healthy people and in neurological diseases. Hydrocephalus is a brain development disorder related to an excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricular system. The functional relevance of cortical structural changes described in this disease is largely unexplored in human. We investigated cortical excitability using multimodal transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in a case of congenital hydrocephalus with almost no neurological signs. METHODS

Positive emotion as a dynamic organizer in low-intermediate French learners' language learning: A qualitative CDST perspective.

Drawing on a Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST) perspective and the PERMA framework, this qualitative multiple-case study investigates the evolution of positive emotion experienced by undergraduate French majors in China who had completed six years of intensive French learning before entering university. In the Chinese context, where non-English foreign languages are typically introduced only at the tertiary level, such learners represent an atypical and underexplored subgroup. The study focuses on how positive emotion changed in a mixed-proficiency university context and how these changes
