BACKGROUND: The venous malformation is the most common congenital vascular malformation and exhibits the characteristics of local invasion and lifelong progressive development. Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) regulates endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, macrophages, vascular inflammation, and metabolism and also affects the development of venous malformations. This study aimed to elucidate the role of the lncRNA LEF1-AS1 in the development of venous malformations and examine the interaction among LEF1-AS1, miR-489-3p, and S100A11 in HUVEC cells.
METHODS: Venous malformation tissues,

The aim of this study was to identify the combinations of chronic comorbidities associated with length of stay (LOS) among multimorbid medical inpatients.Multinational retrospective cohort of 126,828 medical inpatients with multimorbidity, defined as ≥2 chronic diseases (data collection: 2010-2011). We categorized the chronic diseases into comorbidities using the Clinical Classification Software. We described the 20 combinations of comorbidities with the strongest association with prolonged LOS, defined as longer than or equal to country-specific LOS, and reported the difference in median LOS

Allergic asthma often coexists with different pathological conditions, called multimorbidities, that are mostly of allergic nature and share a common underlying inflammatory pathophysiological mechanism. Multimorbidities of allergic asthma may influence asthma control, its severity, and patients' response to treatment, and contribute to the overall socioeconomic burden of the disease. Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is known to play a central role in the pathogenesis of various allergic diseases, including asthma. Thus, IgE-mediated immunologic pathways present an attractive target for intervention in

The treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) can be challenging, especially in elderly multimorbid patients. Since incidence and prevalence rates of IBD are rising steadily, treatment of older patients with relevant and also rare comorbidities will be of increasing relevancy for caregivers. Here we report on a 74-year-old multimorbid patient with severe ulcerative colitis (UC) and hemophilia A. Because of the chronic active disease, therapy with a tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitor was started. He suffered from a severe infectious complication (pneumonia) under therapy with infliximab. Th

OBJECTIVES: We tested the hypothesis of high comorbidity between asthma/allergy and chemical intolerance (CI) and between asthma/allergy and building intolerance (BI), and high multimorbidity between asthma/allergy, CI, and BI.
METHODS: Population-based questionnaire data were used from 530 participants with asthma/allergy (allergic asthma, nonallergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, and/or atopic dermatitis), 414 with self-reported and 112 with physician-diagnosed CI, and 165 with self-reported and 47 with physician-diagnosed BI. Separate reference groups were formed for each of the five case gro

OBJECTIVES: We investigated patterns of multimorbidities among asthma, allergies, and respiratory illnesses in preschool children. We investigated multimorbidities of lifetime asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema, food allergy, pneumonia, and ear infections; and multimorbidities of current (in the last year before the survey) wheeze, dry cough, rhinitis, eczema, and common cold during childhood. We further analyzed whether prevalences of these multimorbidities were due to chance.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 72 kindergartens of Shanghai, China. Parents of preschool children

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity has been recognized as a major public health issue, negatively affecting health-related quality of life, including physical, functional, mental, emotional, and social domains, as well as increasing health care utilization. This exploratory study examines selected health outcomes associated with multimorbidity across older age groups/cohorts and gender, comparing Canada and Australia.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2008/09 Canadian Community Health Survey and the 2009 Australian HILDA survey. Seven major chronic conditions were identical across the two data sets,

OBJECTIVE: To show the extent to which the health of former prisoners was affected by incarceration in extermination camps after 5 and 30 years of leaving the camp, and to determine the etiological factors underlying particular dysfunctions.
METHODS: Medical records of former prisoners developed in 1950 (n=250) and 1975 (n=120) were then, after several decades, retrospectively analyzed and compared with the control group, randomized and matched according to age, sex, occupation, and environment. None of the subjects in the control group was a prisoner either at a concentration camp or at any

BACKGROUND: Increased serum uric acid has been considered a cardiovascular risk factor but no study has assessed its relation with hospital mortality or length of stay. On the basis of data obtained from a prospective registry, the prevalence of gout/hyperuricemia and its association with these and other clinical parameters was evaluated in an Italian cohort of elderly patients acutely admitted to internal medicine or geriatric wards.
METHODS: While the prevalence of gout was calculated by counting patients with this diagnosis hyperuricemia was inferred in patients taking allopurinol at hospi

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The impact of increasingly prevalent cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) multimorbidity on absolute survival remains unclear. We aimed to assess the association of CKM multimorbidity with mortality and life expectancy in US adults.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 46,543 adults (mean age 50.0 years) from NHANES (1999-2018). CKM conditions included type 2 diabetes (T2DM), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Over a 9.2-year median follow-up, mortality risk increased sequentially with the number of CKM conditions. Compared to participants withou

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and pancreatic steatosis (PS) are interconnected ectopic fat conditions linked to cardiometabolic dysregulation. Their combined effect on the long-term risk of cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM; ≥ 2 of diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and stroke) and cardiac remodelling remains unclear.
METHODS: We examined cross-sectional associations between PS and the severity of MASLD histology in a biopsy-proven MASLD cohort from China. Subsequently, using the UK Biobank, we assessed the long-term risk of

Asthma is one of the commonest noncommunicable diseases worldwide. Poor clinical outcomes have been reported in asthma amongst ethnic minority groups (EMGs) and reasons are likely to be multifactorial. There is a suggestion that underlying disease may behave differently amongst EMGs, alongside other factors including deprivation, cultural, religious, social, literacy, patient beliefs, healthcare access, treatment adherence, alongside greater burden of multimorbidity. Multimorbidity (presence of ≥ 2 long-term health conditions) in asthma is increasingly known to contribute to greater asthma bur

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity has become a major global public health challenge. However, existing research primarily emphasizes the identification of disease patterns at the population level and lacks the capacity to provide predictive insights into individual future pattern membership. Bridging this gap is crucial for personalized prevention and management.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to propose an innovative framework that integrates population-level multimorbidity pattern recognition with individual-level predictive modeling, thus advancing multimorbidity research from descriptive analysis to

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: Multimorbidity (MM) is highly prevalent in patients with heart failure (HF) and associated with worse outcomes; however, our understanding of the heterogeneity of MM in HF is limited. The purpose of this study was to identify and characterise MM classes among adults with HF.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a retrospective modified cross-sectional analysis of the combined baseline data repository of adults with New York Heart Association Class I-IV HF enrolled at a single healthcare centre. Comorbidities were assessed with the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), and laten

Delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE) and radiation late effects are a suite of conditions that become apparent months to years after initial exposure to radiation in both humans and non-human primates. Many of these disorders, including cardiac complications, insulin resistance, bone loss, hypertension, and others, are also more common among aging cohorts independent of radiation exposure. This study characterized disease incidence, age of onset, and multimorbidity for 20 common, chronic diseases in 226 irradiated and 51 control rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) from the Wake For

BACKGROUND: Over one-quarter of adults have multimorbidity. Patients with multimorbidity are more likely to struggle to afford their care than patients without multimorbidity, but their experiences with financial strain have not been fully described.
OBJECTIVE: We qualitatively explored the lived experiences of adults with multimorbidity to develop a framework describing financial strain in this patient population.
DESIGN: Using semi-structured interviews, we asked participants to describe scenarios causing financial strain, any exacerbating or alleviating factors, and emotional/behavioral r

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of multimorbidity of a hospital dental patients with high rates of aging in Japan and to identify multimorbidity patterns in older patients (aged 65 years and older) through cluster analysis. As the population ages, the number of patients with multimorbidity is rising, highlighting the need for efficient allocation of dental resources and collaboration with other healthcare professionals. However, the prevalence and patterns of multimorbidity in older dental patients have not yet been reported. Such data could support standardized approa

Existing studies on multimorbidity have largely excluded oral diseases in multimorbidity prevalence estimates. The reason behind this is somewhat unclear, as chronic oral conditions are highly prevalent, affecting over half the global population. To address this gap, we examined the relationship between social disadvantage and multimorbidity, stratifying by the inclusion and exclusion of oral conditions. For participants aged 30 y and over (n = 3,693), cross-sectional analysis was carried out using the US National Health and Nutrition Survey (2013-2014). Multimorbidity was defined as having 2

The prevalence of sleep apnoea is increasing globally; however, population-based studies have reported a wide variation of prevalence estimates, and data on incidence of clinically diagnosed sleep apnoea are scant. Data on the overall burden of comorbidities or multimorbidity in individuals with incident sleep apnoea are scarce, and the pathways to multimorbidity have only marginally been studied. To study the current epidemiology of sleep apnoea in Finland, overall burden of comorbidities, and multimorbidity profiles in individuals with incident sleep apnoea, we conducted a register-based, na
