Being Born Large for Gestational Age is Associated with Increased Global Placental DNA Methylation.

Being born small (SGA) or large for gestational age (LGA) is associated with adverse birth outcomes and metabolic diseases in later life of the offspring. It is known that aberrations in growth during gestation are related to altered placental function. Placental function is regulated by epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation. Several studies in recent years have demonstrated associations between altered patterns of DNA methylation and adverse birth outcomes. However, larger studies that reliably investigated global DNA methylation are lacking. The aim of this study was to characterize

Analysis of incidence and risk factors of retinopathy of prematurity among very-low-birth-weight infants in North Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Although significant advances have been made in perinatal care, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) remains a serious complication in prematurely born individuals. There have been limited studies on ROP in Taiwan, and most of those existing reports are outdated. METHODS: This retrospective study included 252 very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of Chang Gung Children's Hospital over a 2-year period between July 2005 and June 2007. All infants were examined for ROP according to the guidelines published by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Nutrition in early life, epigenetics and lifelong health - evidence from cohort and intervention studies.

This review summarises evidence from cohort and intervention studies on the relationships between nutrition in early life, epigenetics and lifelong health. Established links include maternal diet quality with conception rates, micronutrient sufficiency before and during pregnancy with preterm birth prevention, gestational vitamin D intake with offspring bone health, preconception iodine status with child IQ, adiposity with offspring obesity and maternal stress with childhood atopic eczema. Animal studies demonstrate that early-life environmental exposures induce lasting phenotypic changes via

Alcohol dehydrogenase-2*3 allele protects against alcohol-related birth defects among African Americans.

Considerable variation in offspring outcome is observed after intrauterine alcohol exposure. The underlying mechanism may include genetic diversity in the enzymes responsible for alcohol metabolism. Of the known genetic polymorphisms, differences at the alcohol dehydrogenase-2 locus (ADH2) are likely most critical because the resulting enzymes are >30-fold different in their kinetic constants. To test whether differences in maternal or offspring ADH2 genotype are determinants of risk for alcohol-related birth defects, maternal-infant pairs (n = 243) were enrolled on the basis of maternal alcoh

Season of birth and reproductive performance: an analysis of family reconstitutions of 800 women born in The Netherlands at the end of the 19th century.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported associations between season of birth and reproductive characteristics such as menarcheal age, fecundability, and twinning, but the results are inconsistent with respect to the location of high- and low-risk seasons. To assess whether this disagreement could be due to the use of populations from different geographic areas and time frames instead of different etiologic pathways, we investigated the season-of-birth dependency of a variety of reproductive outcomes within one time- and area-limited population. METHODS: In a historic follow-up study, the re

Is there an association between family history of diabetes mellitus and long-term cardiovascular hospitalizations of offspring?

OBJECTIVE: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) was previously found to be an independent risk factor for long-term cardiovascular morbidity of parturients and their offspring. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between family history of diabetes mellitus (DM) in non-diabetic mothers and long-term pediatric cardiovascular hospitalizations of their offspring. STUDY DESIGN: In a hospital-based cohort study, the incidence of cardiovascular disorders was compared between offspring of non-diabetic mothers with and without a family history of DM. Cardiovascular hospitaliz

The association of maternal vitamin D status with infant birth outcomes, postnatal growth and adiposity in the first 2 years of life in a multi-ethnic Asian population: the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) cohort study.

Maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy has been associated with infant birth and postnatal growth outcomes, but reported findings have been inconsistent, especially in relation to postnatal growth and adiposity outcomes. In a mother-offspring cohort in Singapore, maternal plasma vitamin D was measured between 26 and 28 weeks of gestation, and anthropometric measurements were obtained from singleton offspring during the first 2 years of life with 3-month follow-up intervals to examine birth, growth and adiposity outcomes. Associations were analysed using multivariable linear regression. Of

Perinatal outcomes of multiple births in southwest Nigeria.

Compared to singletons, multiple births are associated with a substantially-higher risk of maternal and perinatal mortality worldwide. However, little evidence exists on the perinatal profile and risk of neurodevelopmental disabilities among the survivors, especially in developing countries. This cross-sectional study, therefore, set out to determine the adverse perinatal outcomes that are potential markers for neurodevelopmental disabilities in infants with multiple gestations in a developing country. In total, 4,573 mothers, and their 4,718 surviving offspring in an inner-city maternity hosp

Case-control study of birth characteristics and the risk of hepatoblastoma.

BACKGROUND: Hepatoblastoma is a malignant embryonal tumor typically diagnosed in children younger than five years of age. Little is known on hepatoblastoma etiology. METHODS: We matched California Cancer Registry records of hepatoblastomas diagnosed in children younger than age 6 from 1988 to 2007 to birth records using a probabilistic record linkage program, yielding 261 cases. Controls (n=218,277), frequency matched by birth year to all cancer cases in California for the same time period, were randomly selected from California birth records. We examined demographic and socioeconomic informa

The impact of the new Turkish regulation, imposing single embryo transfer after assisted reproduction technology, on neonatal intensive care unit utilization: a single center experience.

OBJECTIVES AND AIM: IVF has become an efficient and widely used treatment for infertile couples, however, it is responsible for an increasing number of multifetal pregnancies and adverse neonatal outcomes. This study aimed to assess a health service utilization in one neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), as a response to the 2010 Turkish reproductive regulation requiring single embryo transfer (SET). METHODS: All assisted reproductive technology (ART) pregnancies delivered at Zekai Tahir Burak Maternity Teaching Hospital between February 2010 and October 2011 were included in this study. Subj

Prenatal and perinatal factors associated with developing multiple sclerosis later in life: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Both genetic and environmental factors play roles in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) etiopathogenesis. The relationship between prenatal/perinatal factors/exposures and future MS occurrence in the offspring remains controversial. Here, we aimed to review the available evidence on prenatal/perinatal factors associated with later MS occurrence. METHOD: We performed systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus from inception to October 2020. We included original observational studies conducted on human participants addressing the association between prenatal/perinatal factors and M

Breastfeeding higher order multiples: enhancing support during the postpartum hospitalization period.

Higher order multiple birth (HOM) families require genuine and effective support in their quest to breastfeed their infants during the postdelivery hospitalization period. Evidence suggests that the impact of current policies and care practices on HOM breastfeeding requires careful examination. Recommendations for enhanced support include evidence-based breastfeeding of multiples practices, multiples-specific breastfeeding education for HOM families and health professionals, and establishment of an HOM breastfeeding consultation network. Equally important are coordinated breastfeeding care, de

The relationship between maternal birthweight and gestational age in twins and singletons and those of their offspring in Norway.

In order to elucidate whether maternal plurality affects offspring intrauterine growth, the relationship between birthweight and gestational age of twins and singletons and those of their first singleton liveborn children in Norway was studied using data from the Medical Birth Registry. The population-based sample consisted of 49,698 mother-offspring pairs (48,842 with singleton and 856 with twin-mothers). In bivariate analyses, no significant differences in mean birthweight and gestational age of offspring of twin and singleton mothers were found, although the mean birthweight and gestational

Multiple births and risk of epithelial ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Prevailing hypotheses about the causes of ovarian carcinogenesis predict that women with a history of multiple births (twins, triplets, etc.) should be at increased risk of epithelial ovarian cancer. However, the scant available evidence suggests that they may actually be at lower risk. To resolve this issue, we pooled data from eight studies involving 2859 parous women with epithelial ovarian cancer (case patients) and 7434 parous women without ovarian cancer (control women). In addition to assessing their history of multiple births (and the sex of the children, where

Cohort-based analysis of paternal opioid use in relation to offspring's BMI and plasma lipid profile.

A growing body of evidence suggests that opioid use may affect consumer's offspring by second-hand passive smoke exposure, as well as by transgenerational impacts mediated by genetic and epigenetic alterations of paternal gametes. In human studies, these effects are limited to investigating the neural, behavioral and cognitive characteristics of offspring. Only animal studies have investigated the metabolic parameters influenced by passive opium smoke exposure. Here, we conducted population-based analyses aimed to estimate the association of paternal opioid consumption, started before or after

Three live-birth pregnancies in a woman with Williams syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal Williams syndrome with their associated (cardiac) malformations is rarely encountered during pregnancy. METHODS: We report on a patient with Williams syndrome who has had 3 live-birth pregnancies. RESULTS: Several noncardiac, mainly fetal, complications need to be anticipated: premature labor, intrauterine growth restriction with subsequent small-for-gestational-age offspring, and recurrence of congenital heart disease or similar syndromes. CONCLUSION: The present case report illustrates that multiple live-birth pregnancies are possible in women with Williams syndrome, a

Maternal obesity, gestational diabetes, and central nervous system birth defects.

BACKGROUND: Maternal obesity and diabetes are both associated with increased risk of congenital central nervous system (CNS) malformations in the offspring and may share a common underlying mechanism. Our objective was to evaluate whether gestational diabetes influenced the association of prepregnancy maternal obesity and risks for CNS birth defects. METHODS: This Texas population-based case-control study evaluated births occurring January 1997 through June 2001. Data came from structured telephone interviews. Cases (n=477) were mothers of offspring with anencephaly (n=120), spina bifida (n=1
