Household pit latrines as a potential source of the fly Musca sorbens--a one year longitudinal study from The Gambia.

OBJECTIVES: To assess whether the trachoma vector Musca sorbens was breeding in household latrines in a trachoma-endemic part of The Gambia. METHODS: Longitudinal study of flies emerging from 16 sentinel household latrines selected at random from a list of all latrines present in four Gambian villages. Latrines were surveyed and fly traps were set over the drop hole for 24 h once per month for a year. RESULTS: All the sentinel latrines were of the 'Gambian improved household latrine' design, which has a cement slab but is not ventilated or fly-proofed. The latrines were all in regular use by

Studies of wound myiasis among sheep and goats in North Sinai Governorate, Egypt.

Myiasis of man and animals is a real welfare problem of world wide distribution particularly in animal raising countries. Studies of myiasis of sheep and goats in North Sinai resulted in the identification of 21 species of myiasis producing flies. The predominant species was Musca domestica followed by Lucilia sericata and the least abundant was M. albina. In general, sheep were more infested with wound myiasis than goats. The overall infestation rate was high in summer, followed by spring then autumn. The least rate of infestation was winter. As to the different areas examined, the high rate

[Asthma caused by Lucilia Caesar larvae: clinical and immunologic study].

Lucilia Caesar larvae (LCL) are used as live fish bait by anglers. Five cases of asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis following exposure to LCL are reported. Three had work-related asthma as they were working on a fish bait farm or shop and two had asthma when they went fishing. In one subject exposure to LCL caused asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and contact urticaria. In four subjects peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) was monitored during exposure to LCL. In three out of four subjects there was evidence of LCL-related asthma. In one subject it was not possible to record PEFR during exposure to LCL, as

Envenomization with Snake Versus Scorpion Venom: Postmortem Repercussions on the Successional Dynamics of Carcass-Attracted Flies in a Forensic Context.

BACKGROUND: Animal venoms may alter postmortem carcass conditions and thereby influence carrion-associated insects. However, it remains unclear whether lethal envenomization affects adult Diptera as a broad assemblage-level response or as taxon-specific changes during decomposition. METHODS: Fifteen rabbits were assigned to control, snake-envenomized, or scorpion-envenomized treatments (with five carcasses each). Carcasses were exposed under semi-natural conditions, until complete dryness, over 11 days postmortem. Adult flies were collected daily for analyzing abundance at total, family, and

Seasonal Impact of Heroin on Rabbit Carcass Decomposition and Insect Succession.

This study investigates the succession of insects and the length of the decomposition of rabbit carcasses injected with heroin. In total, 24 rabbits (2-2.5 kg, Oryctolagus cuniculus domesticus L.) were used in the study. Twelve carcasses were exposed to insect activity in winter (January and February) and 12 in summer (July and August) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Three replicate experiments were conducted in each season. For each experiment, three rabbits were injected with varying doses of heroin, and the fourth rabbit was used as a control, being injected only with saline solution. Insects belo

Molecular characterization of esterase E3 gene associated with organophosphorus insecticide resistance in the New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax.

The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is one of the most important myiasis-causing flies in South America. It is responsible for severe economic losses to livestock producers, mainly because it causes mortality in newborn calves and reductions in the quality of leather and in the production of milk and meat. The economic losses caused by myiasis, along with those caused by other internal and external parasites, are the main factors limiting meat production. In Brazil, C. hominivorax has been controlled by applying insecticides, particularly organ

Bovine thelaziasis: a re-emerging parasitic disease of cattle and buffaloes.

Thelaziasis, also known as thelaziosis, is a neglected vector-borne disease caused by parasitic nematodes from the genus Thelazia, belonging to the family Thelaziidae. The disease is transmitted biologically by various fly species, including the genus Musca (family Muscidae), Phortica (family Drosophilidae), and Fannia (family Fanniidae). These flies act as intermediate hosts (IHs) by depositing infective third-stage larvae (L3) during their tear feeding. Thelazia spp., such as T. gulosa, T. skrjabini, and T. rhodesi, inhabit the ocular regions of various animals, including humans and birds. A

Diversity of Calliphoridae (Diptera) in Brazil's Tinguá Biological Reserve.

The Calliphoridae are flies of great ecological, medical and sanitary importance because they are decomposers of organic matter, mechanical vectors of pathogenic agents, and causers of myiasis. This paper attempts to ascertain the diversity of Calliphoridae in the Tinguá Biological Reserve and correlate meteorological data (temperature, relative humidity of the air, and precipitation) with the occurrence of these flies. The study was conducted at a site in the Tinguá Biological Reserve, located in the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Four traps were set up using ch

Stable flies preferentially oviposit on sites offering conspecific eggs with egg-derived bacterial semiochemicals.

In various dipteran taxa, selection of oviposition sites by gravid female flies is informed by the presence of adult conspecific flies, their eggs, or their larval offspring. Working with blood-feeding stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae), we tested three hypotheses: (1) stable flies preferentially oviposit on sites offering conspecific eggs with egg-derived airborne semiochemicals (message-bearing chemicals), (2) egg-borne bacteria elicit oviposition, and (3) egg- or egg bacteria-derived semiochemicals attract flies. Two-choice laboratory experiments, testing for fly attracti

Evaluation of insecticide ear tags containing ethion for control of pyrethroid resistant Haematobia irritans (L.) on dairy cattle.

A field study was conducted in central Argentina to evaluate the efficacy of ear tags containing 36% ethion against pyrethroid resistant populations of Haematobia irritans on grazing dairy cattle. The treated group consisted of 45 milking Holstein cows which received two tags per head and the control consisted of 22 dry cows from the same cohort. Treated and control groups were grazed on similar lucerne pastures separated for a minimum distance of 800 m but they were not isolated from other cattle herds on the same or contiguous properties. In both groups, horn fly estimation were made weekly

Influence of Clothing on Decomposition and Presence of Insects on Rabbit Carcasses.

The decomposition rate and insects attraction to carcasses are affected by a number of factors such as temperature, body mass, the presence of poisons, humidity, and insect activity. The present study was planned to investigate the influence of clothing on both the decomposition process and the presence of insects on rabbit carcasses. The study was performed in May 2016 and involved the use of 18 live mature rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus L.), which were euthanized by chloroform. Rabbit carcasses were divided into three replicates with six rabbits in each replicate. Rabbits in each replicate w

Impact of Cypermethrin persistence on stomoxyine abundance and Trypanosoma Vivax infection.

Stomoxyine biting flies play a pivotal role as mechanical vectors of Animal African Trypanosomosis (AAT), inducing painful bites and significant disturbances in cattle, thereby affecting productivity. This study delves into the dynamics of cypermethrin persistence on cattle, a key measure aimed at mitigating stomoxyine populations and the associated transmission of trypanosomes. Conducted within a cattle settlement in Ido, Ibadan, southwest Nigeria, data collection occurred biennially from 2016 to 2022. Cypermethrin application followed a restricted protocol triggered by high fly density. Stom

Shrubs and trees as natural insect protection for grazing animals in Switzerland and the alpine region: A systematic review of in vitro, in vivo and clinical trials.

Insect infestation in grazing animals is an increasing problem due to factors such as global warming and increasing resistance to insecticides, which have a direct impact on animal health and welfare. According to reports from farmers, observations in zoopharmacognosy and the ingredients of commercial insecticides, various indigenous trees and shrubs with an insecticidal or repellent effect grow or can be planted on pastures. The aim of our systematic review (designed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement) was to identify perenni

Shoo fly don't bother me: Flies track social primates and carry viable anthrax.

Flies-a small name for an enormous taxonomic group of over 110,000 described species that have unique ecological roles. Nonbiting flies ingest organic material in faecal matter or carrion, which is rich in microbes and nutrients that benefit both adults and their offspring (maggots). These are often referred to as "filth flies" because they are often pests in human settlements and responsible for the spread of enteric pathogens. Filth flies associate with human populations; however, whether this association is simply due to the presence of organic waste produced, or if flies move with social g
