Forty-three former polio patients now complaining of new progressive muscle weakness (symptomatic patients) plus 13 former polio patients without new neuromuscular complaints were included in the study. The symptomatic patients reported high frequencies of other neuromuscular complaints and a decline in their functional level. Most frequent complaints were general fatigue, low backache, and muscle pain (97.7%, 86%, and 79.1%, respectively) and a decline in the ability to walk (80%). In a prospective follow-up averaging 2.1 years, the muscle strength of 26 muscles in all four limbs of each pati

A double blind cross-over study of eight patients with familial hypokalaemic periodic paralysis was made to assess the influence of acetazolamide on muscle strength. All patients had a reduced interictal muscle fibre conduction velocity. Five patients had no attacks at the time of the study. One patient withdrew from the study because of an adverse reaction. The muscle strength of 11 muscle groups was measured with a hand-held dynamometer. The sum of force improved significantly in the seven patients (mean increase: 17%, p less than 0.05; 95% confidence interval: 7.2-26.8%). Endurance tests sh

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Falls are a leading cause of disability and mortality in older adults. Muscle strength, neuromuscular activation, and balance, particularly the push-pull ratio (PPR), play key roles in fall prevention. The purpose of this study is to analyze among muscle strength, time to peak force (TP), and PPR between fallers and non-fallers in nursing home residents.
METHODS: A total of 51 older adults participated in the study. Participants were classified as fallers or non-fallers based on their fall history in the past year. Isometric muscle strength assessments were conducted u

BACKGROUND/AIM: Isokinetic strength assessment of the rotator cuff muscle is frequently applied in a variety of shoulder postures, but none of these consider muscular architecture, which is one of the most important aspects of improving strength development. This study aimed to examine the test and retest reliability and validity of the muscle architecture-based position (MABP), which is 25° abduction and 20° external rotation, in healthy subjects to be able to select a better isokinetic assessment position for shoulder rotator cuff muscles.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 54 healthy males

Imbalance in shoulder rotator muscles is a well-documented problem in swimmers, and it is important to implement land-based strength training programs. Meanwhile, the effects of a detraining period on swimmers' shoulder rotator muscles are unknown. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of a strength training program and detraining on the strength and balance of shoulder rotator cuff muscles in young swimmers, despite the continuity of usual water training. An experimental group (n = 20) and a control group (n = 20) of young male swimmers with the same characteristics (age, body

Maneuvering a motorcycle in racing conditions or for prolonged time is sufficiently demanding that on many occasions forearm muscles reach a state of functional failure when riders cannot properly brake or operate the throttle. This study intends to discriminate which ones of the several dynamometric parameters used in the literature to characterize the Force-time (F-t) curve during voluntary contractions are more sensitive to neuromuscular fatigue in simulated motorcycle-riding conditions. Thirty-three adults performed an intermittent fatiguing protocol (IFP) that simulated the brake-pulling

OBJECTIVE: Severe burns cause hypermetabolic responses and prolonged hospitalization, resulting in loss of body mass and muscle strength. This study aimed to determine whether long-term gains in lean body mass (LBM) after structured exercise programs are functionally meaningful and related to greater muscle strength in severely burned children.
STUDY DESIGN: LBM and muscle strength were measured at discharge and at 6, 12, 24, and 36 months after burn in 349 children. Body composition, including LBM, was measured via dual-emission X-ray-absorptiometry. Peak torque was measured using Biodex dyn

Protein intake, sources and distribution impact on muscle protein synthesis and muscle mass in older adults. However, it is less clear whether dietary protein influences muscle strength. Data were obtained from the Researching Eating Activity and Cognitive Health (REACH) study, a cross-sectional study aimed at investigating dietary patterns, cognitive function and metabolic syndrome in older adults aged 65-74 years. Dietary intake was assessed using a 4-d food record and muscle strength using a handgrip strength dynamometer. After adjusting for confounders, in female older adults (n 212), tota

Previous investigators have proposed that knee strength, hamstrings to quadriceps, and side-to-side asymmetries may vary according to soccer field positions. However, different results have been found in these variables, and a generalization of this topic could lead to data misinterpretation by coaches and soccer clubs. Thus, the aim of this study was to measure knee strength and asymmetry in soccer players across different field positions. One hundred and two male professional soccer players performed maximal concentric and eccentric isokinetic knee actions on the preferred and nonpreferred l

The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between the concentric hamstrings/quadriceps muscle strength (Hcon :Qcon ) and cross-sectional area ratios (Hcsa :Qcsa ) in professional soccer players with Hcon :Qcon imbalance. Nine male professional soccer players (25·3 ± 4·1 years) performed five maximal concentric contractions of the knee extensors (KE) and flexors (KF) at 60 s(-1) to assess Hcon :Qcon . The test was performed using the dominant (preferred kicking), and non-dominant limb with a 5-min recovery period was allowed between them. Only players with Hcon :Qcon < 0·60 (range:

This study investigated the relationship between peroneal muscle echogenicity and balance function in individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI). While prior research has examined peroneal muscle activity, reaction time, and balance, the impact of echogenicity-an indicator of myosteatosis/fibrosis-remained underexplored. Cross-sectional study. Sixty-two adults with CAI were included. Peroneal muscle size, echogenicity, and stiffness were assessed using ultrasound. Dynamic balance was evaluated via the Y balance test (YBT), and static postural control was evaluated during lateral step-dow
