Effectiveness of abdominal hollowing and piriformis stretching exercises in spondylolisthesis patients: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spondylolisthesis is a clinically important cause of chronic low back pain, activity limitation, and reduced functional capacity. Exercise-based physiotherapy is widely recommended for conservative management, yet uncertainty remains regarding the added value of targeted core stabilization and hip-related stretching strategies in this population. Abdominal hollowing is intended to improve deep trunk muscle activation and lumbopelvic control, whereas piriformis stretching may reduce posterior hip tightness and movement-related discomfort. This trial aims to evaluate whether a

Foot orthoses for forefoot pressure reduction and the hypothesized role in calf muscle stretching: A systematic review highlighting an evidence gap.

BACKGROUND: Excessive forefoot plantar pressures are associated with pain, ulceration risk, and functional limitations in both healthy individuals and those with pathologies such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Limited ankle dorsiflexion, often related to gastrocnemius-soleus tightness, may contribute to forefoot overload. Although foot orthoses (FOs) are widely used to redistribute plantar loads, it remains unclear whether the existing evidence includes orthotic interventions designed to promote posterior chain flexibility. OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the effectiveness of foot orthos

Effects of static stretching programs performed at different volume-equated weekly frequencies on passive properties of muscle-tendon unit.

Whether static stretching (SS) frequency has an effect on increasing the range of motion (ROM) and decreasing muscle stiffness remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of two 6-week SS programs performed with different frequencies but generally the same duration of stretching on the passive properties of the medial gastrocnemius muscle-tendon unit. The study participants comprised 24 male volunteers randomly assigned to either the one-time/week group or the three-times/week group, performing 6 min of SS once per week and 2 min of SS thrice per week, respectively.

Physiotherapy-Led Rehabilitation of Foot Drop Following Lower Limb Gunshot Injury.

Gunshot injury (GSI) severely damages muscles and the nervous system, requiring long-term treatment and rehabilitation. This case report highlights the effectiveness of physiotherapy-led rehabilitation in a patient with lower limb injury and foot drop. After emergency treatment, the patient was diagnosed with common peroneal nerve injury (CPNI) and referred to a rehabilitation center, where evaluation revealed foot drop, discomfort, paresthesia, decreased mobility, and functional limitations. A structured rehabilitation program was then initiated that included education, orthotic devices, stre

Soft Wearable Robot Adaptive to Individual Shoulder Differences for Respiratory Rehabilitation.

In this paper, we present a wearable robot designed to perform scapular adduction and stretch the chest and back muscles using a cable-driven mechanism. The system is intended to provide respiratory muscle stretching for senior adults with limited scapular and thoracic mobility, relieve the sensation of dyspnea, and prevent the decline of respiratory function. The mechanism is based on modeling of the shoulder girdle motion, allowing for simple alignment adjustments and adaptation to different shoulder geometries. We verified the device functionality with two users. The results confirmed scapu

Hip position influences shear wave elastography measurements of the hamstring muscles in healthy subjects.

Ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE) has recently emerged as a non-invasive tool for assessing muscle stiffness. The majority of studies utilizing SWE have focused primarily on upper-extremity muscles, with little attention attributed to lower-extremity muscles. In addition, of the studies that have been published, various joint and muscle positions have been examined, rendering it difficult to compare results across studies. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to examine lower extremity medial hamstring muscles (semitendinosus and semimembranosus) and to determine how hip position

Vibrations and their applications in sport. A review.

In sport, mechanical vibration is used as a massage tool and/or for training purposes. Two varieties of vibration training (VT) can be distinguished: strength exercises with superimposed vibratory stimulation (VS exercises) and motor tasks performed under whole body vibration (the WBV training). Vibratory massage has been used extensively since the beginning of the 20th century while VT is a relatively new technique. In the research literature, the main subjects addressed have been acute and cumulative effects of VS on flexibility and strength. Marked enhancement effects were obtained in mediu

Bradykinin B2 receptor contributes to the exaggerated muscle mechanoreflex in rats with femoral artery occlusion.

Static muscle contraction activates the exercise pressor reflex, which in turn increases sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) and blood pressure (BP). Bradykinin (BK) is considered as a muscle metabolite responsible for modulation of the sympathetic and cardiovascular responses to muscle contraction. Prior studies have suggested that kinin B2 receptor mediates the effects of BK on the reflex SNA and BP responses during stimulation of skeletal muscle afferents. In patients with peripheral artery disease and a rat model with femoral artery ligation, amplified SNA and BP responses to static exercise

Muscle cyclo-oxygenase-2 pathway contributes to the exaggerated muscle mechanoreflex in rats with congestive heart failure.

Cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzymes are responsible for the formation from arachidonic acid of prostaglandins, among other metabolites. Prior studies have suggested that inhibition of the COX pathway attenuates the responses of sympathetic nerve activity and blood pressure during static muscle contraction. Static muscle contraction activates the exercise pressor reflex, which in turn increases sympathetic nerve activity and blood pressure. Also, COX products contribute to exaggeration of the exercise pressor reflex in heart failure (HF). This dysfunction of the exercise pressor reflex has previously

Acute effects of static stretching on peak torque and the hamstrings-to-quadriceps conventional and functional ratios.

Recent evidence has shown acute static stretching may decrease hamstring-to-quadriceps (H:Q) ratios. However, the effects of static stretching on the functional H:Q ratio, which uses eccentric hamstrings muscle actions, have not been investigated. This study examined the acute effects of hamstrings and quadriceps static stretching on leg extensor and flexor concentric peak torque (PT), leg flexor eccentric PT, and the conventional and functional H:Q ratios. Twenty-two women (mean ± SD age=20.6 ± 1.9 years; body mass=64.6 ± 9.1 kg; height=164.5 ± 6.4 cm) performed three maximal voluntary unilat

Passive vs. active warm-up combined with stretching on hamstring flexibility and maximal voluntary contractions.

This study aimed to compare the effects of passive and active warm-up protocols combined with static or neurodynamic stretching on hamstring muscle function. Sixteen individuals (7 men and 9 women) performed three experimental sessions in a randomized order: 1) passive warm-up and static stretching, 2) passive warm-up and neurodynamic stretching, 3) active warm-up and static stretching (control condition). Passive warm- up consisted of 20 minutes in a 45°C hot-room. Active warm-up included 10 minutes of cycling and 10 minutes of sub-maximal contractions. Following warm-up, the participants wer

The Regulatory Effects of Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound Combined With Stretching on Muscle Tension Relief: Focusing on the Microstructural Mechanism.

While often associated with neurological conditions, muscle dysfunction may also result from primary myopathies and other non-neurological causes, contributing significantly to motor impairment and reduced quality of life. Conventional therapeutic approaches, including electrotherapy, cryotherapy and pharmacological interventions, exhibit limited efficacy and potential adverse effects. By comparison, low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has emerged as a promising research focus due to its non-invasive nature, safety profile and therapeutic efficiency. This study presents a novel approach fo
