Mycotoxins are a group of secondary fungi metabolites present in foods that cause adverse effects in humans and animals. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a reliable and sensitive method to determine the presence of fumonisin B1, aflatoxin B1, ochratoxin B, T-2 toxin, ochratoxin A and zearalenone. A rapid, effective process, which involves microwave-assisted dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (MA-d-μ-SPE), has been proposed for the extraction and detection of 6 mycotoxins in peach seed, milk powder, corn flour and beer sample matrixes, for subsequent analysis by ultr

Mycotoxins are secondary fungal metabolites, toxic to humans, animals and plants. Under the influence of various factors, mycotoxins may undergo modifications of their chemical structure. One of the methods of mycotoxin modification is a transformation occurring in plant cells or under the influence of fungal enzymes. This paper reviews the current knowledge on the natural occurrence of the most important trichothecenes and zearalenone in cereals/cereal products, their metabolism, and the potential toxicity of the metabolites. Only very limited data are available for the majority of the identi

Dietary exposure of Hong Kong adults to mycotoxins and their metabolites including aflatoxins (AFs), ochratoxin A (OTA), fumonisins (FNs), deoxynivalenol (DON), acetyldeoxynivalenols (AcDONs) and zearalenone (ZEA) was estimated using the Total Diet Study (TDS) approach to assess the associated health risk to the local people. Sixty commonly consumed food items, collected in four seasons, were sampled and prepared as consumed. These mycotoxins were primarily found at low levels. The highest mean levels (upper bound) were: AFs, 1.50 µg kg(-)(1) in legumes, nuts and seed; OTA, 0.22 µg kg(-)(1) in

The estrogenic activity of ginseng has been the subject of conflicting reports. Cell proliferation, induction of estrogen-responsive genes, and isolated cases of adverse reactions such as postmenopausal vaginal bleeding and gynecomastia have been reported after ginseng treatment. Other studies report antiproliferative effects with no induction of estrogen-responsive genes. We developed estrogen receptor (ER) alpha and ER alpha competitive binding assays using recombinant receptors and [(3)H]-17 alpha-estradiol to detect phytoestrogens in extracts of Asian ginseng root (Panax ginseng C. The individual and combined effects of feeding fumonisin B1 (FB1; 0, 100, 200 mg FB1/kg) and moniliformin (M; 0, 100, 200 mg M/kg) were evaluated using a 3 x 3 factorial arrangement of treatments. Significant mortality (P < 0.05) occurred in chicks fed all diets containing 200 mg M/kg (50%-65%). Compared with controls and chicks fed FB1, both feed intake and body weight gain were decreased (P < 0.05) in chicks fed diets containing 100 mg M/kg. Chicks fed M had heavier heart weights (P < 0.05) than control chicks or chicks fed FB1. Compared with controls, chicks fed diets containing 200 mg M/kg

Twenty-five isolates of F. acuminatum, 38 of F. avenaceum, 1 of F. culmorum, 31 of F. oxysporum and 56 of F. sambucinum were obtained in 1983, 1984 and 1986 from cereal grains and soil from various parts of Norway. The isolates were grown on an autoclaved Uncle Ben's parboiled rice medium and examined for production of trichothecenes and other toxins and for toxicity in rat feeding tests. F. culmorum N46C(2) and Fusarium sambucimum 45-86-A produced zearalenone (F-2) 864 and 665 ppm, respectively and caused uterine enlargement in rats. Most of these isolates produced no known trichothecene myco

INTRODUCTION: Beauvericin (BEA), enniatin B (ENN B), and moniliformin (MON), mainly produced by Fusarium species, are often described as emerging mycotoxins due to their frequent detection in cereals and cereal-based products and their current lack of regulatory limits. Despite increasing evidence regarding their individual toxicities-including immunotoxic, genotoxic, reproductive, and cardiotoxic effects-information on their combined toxicity and the underlying mechanisms remains limited. To address this gap, this study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic effects, reactive oxygen species (ROS) ge

Extremely premature infants are a highly vulnerable patient group that might be exposed to a vast number of dietary and environmental contaminants, which may impact their health trajectories. This study assessed xenobiotic exposures in 26 extremely premature infants, with a special focus on dietary mycotoxins, using a dual analytical approach combining four sensitive, targeted LC-MS/MS methods and one non-targeted high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS) assay. A total of 187 matched biological samples comprising breast milk (n = 35), plasma (n = 48), urine (n = 52), and stool (n = 52) collec

Foodborne mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by filamentous fungi. At sufficient concentrations, ingested mycotoxins have been found to disrupt the microbiome and exert toxic effects on gastrointestinal, hepatic, renal, and other tissues. Toddlers are particularly vulnerable to ill effects due to increased intake relative to lower body weight and immature detoxification, metabolic, and immune function. Despite this susceptibility, their adverse health effects remain under-recognized in public health sectors, and data on mycotoxin contamination in foods marketed to young childr

Medicinal plants are used worldwide to treat a variety of ailments. Due to the provenance of medicinal plants, they are subjected to contamination by moulds, which may be responsible for spoilage and production of mycotoxins. The investigation was designed to throw light on mycological and mycotoxicological status of some medicinal plants from Pakistan and the result showed 30 % and 26.7 % samples were contaminated with aflatoxins and ochratoxin A, respectively. Mould contamination was present in 90 % samples, of which 70 % exceeded the permissible limits. Opium poppy, licorice root, and India

Wheat grain deterioration during storage poses a critical threat to food security, primarily driven by fungal succession and mycotoxin contamination. In this study, we simulated high-humidity (97%) and warm (28°C) storage conditions to characterize the dynamics of bacterial and fungal communities and their correlation with mycotoxin production. We identified three distinct phases of mycotoxin accumulation: a non-toxigenic early stage (D0-D6), an AFB1-only middle stage (D15-D25), and a multi-mycotoxin late stage (D35-D50) characterized by the co-occurrence of AFB1, ZEN, and DON. High-throughput

The health of humans and livestock is significantly compromised by the pervasive and serious issue of mycotoxin contamination in crops. Exploring ways to eliminate mycotoxin contamination is a global concern. In vivo biological prevention and treatment of mycotoxin damage demand a comprehensive understanding of its harm mechanisms, which is essential for developing comprehensive strategies. This study aimed to systematically review the mechanisms by which mycotoxin contamination damages the organism, causing oxidative stress, cellular apoptosis, autophagy, ferroptosis, and via the gut-liver ax

Exposure to T2 toxin is known to induce hepatotoxicity and gut dysbiosis, yet effective dietary interventions remain underexplored. This study investigates the hepatoprotective and microbiota-modulating effects of lycopene against T2 toxin-induced toxicity in mice. Mice were exposed to T2 toxin with or without lycopene supplementation at low and high doses. The hepatic function, oxidative stress markers, inflammatory gene expression, detoxification pathway activity, and gut microbiota composition were assessed using histological, biochemical, and molecular analyses. T2 toxin exposure resulted

Heat- and drought-tolerant sorghum is an attractive alternative to maize, yet its silage mycotoxin trade-offs remain unclear. We compared maize (Zea mays L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench; cultivars Goliath and Sucrosorgo 506) and 1:1 maize-sorghum silages after 60 d ensiling (microsilo scale), with or without a commercial multi-strain lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inoculant. All silages fermented well (pH 4.06 - 4.21; lactic acid 18.1 - 27.9 g/kg dry matter). Maize silage showed the highest Fusarium toxins-deoxynivalenol (DON) 499 - 516 and nivalenol (NIV) 173 - 216 μg/kg dry matter. In

Chronic exposure to mycotoxin-contaminated food and feed induces systemic toxicity in humans and animals, with emerging evidence identifying ferroptosis as a key mechanism driving this pathology. Key mycotoxins, including deoxynivalenol, aflatoxin B1, T-2 toxin, fumonisin B1, zearalenone, ochratoxin A, and patulin, trigger ferroptosis through interconnected pathways: iron metabolism disruption, lipid peroxides accumulation, Glutathione Peroxidase 4 (GPX4) antioxidant system imbalance, Ferroptosis Suppressor Protein 1 (FSP1) pathway modulation, and mitochondrial homeostasis disruption. This rev

Fungal keratitis (FK) is a vision-threatening infection in which Fusarium species not only invade the cornea but may also release mycotoxins that exacerbate tissue injury. Here, we established a corneal exposure model to delineate the direct effects of Fusarium-derived mycotoxins independent of live fungal infection, using deoxynivalenol (DON), fumonisin B1 (FB1), and T-2 toxin as representative compounds. Hstological analyses revealed that all three mycotoxins markedly impaired corneal epithelial repair, induced stromal disorganization, and promoted inflammatory cell infiltration. At the mole

Mycotoxin contamination in wheat is a major food safety concern; however, quantitative evidence linking fungal community signals, mycotoxin exceedance risk, and wheat quality traits in naturally contaminated wheat remains limited. In this study, wheat samples were collected from mycotoxin-prone monitoring sites under unusually rainy conditions in 2022 to explore early-warning indicators and post-harvest mitigation strategies. According to the National Food Safety Standard of China GB 2761-2017, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), deoxynivalenol (DON), and zearalenone (ZEN) exceeded the maximum limits in 52.2

With rapid globalization and the increasing demand for traditional Chinese medicines, quality and safety has become a critical priority for both domestic and international markets. However, traditional Chinese medicines are susceptible to contamination by pathogenic microorganisms during the process of cultivation, growth, processing, storage, and transportation, which can lead to mycotoxin contamination that adversely affect the quality and safety of traditional Chinese medicines, and may pose potential threats to human health. This review summarizes mycotoxin contamination, the common detect
