To investigate the more ideal graft for optimal repair of tympanic membrane perforation, we examined the use of septal perichondrium in myringoplasty. Twenty-five patients with ages ranging between 18 and 54 were included in this study. All had a persistent, symptomatic tympanic membrane perforation, and nasal obstruction. All patients were scheduled for myringoplasty by a transmeatal approach in combination with septoplasty under general anaesthesia. Twenty-three patients had intact graft material and had more than 5 dB HL improvement in conductive hearing thresholds at least three frequencie

A simple method for office closure of eardrum perforation using an atero-collagen graft used for dermal defects (Terdermis) without fibrin glue was developed. Eardrum perforations were successfully closed in 71.4% of all cases (63 ears) after the initial treatment. Neither skin incision nor the use of temporal fascial grafts was necessary in this method. The merit of the method is that there is no possibility of blood infection because no blood materials are used.

Although tympanic membrane perforations continue to be a significant source of otologic morbidity in the pediatric population, myringoplasty in children still elicits debate. The records of 76 patients under 18 who underwent 90 myringoplasties at the 12 de Octubre University Hospital (Madrid, Spain) over a recent 8-year period were reviewed. The overall short-term surgical success rate was 64.8%. The overall success rate evaluated at least one year after surgery was 58%. The audiological threshold improved in 68% per cent of successful cases. Surprisingly, females had lower graft take rates th

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronic acid fat graft myringoplasty (HAFGM) is an office-based technique for tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) treatment. It is simple, inexpensive, and performed under local anesthesia at the outpatient office department. We aimed to compare HAFGM technique to a recently described topical use of autologous platelet rich plasma myringoplasty (PRPM) in the repair of TMP. We also aimed to assess the hearing level improvement postoperatively.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective study in an adult tertiary care center between January 2015 and January 2016. Adult patients presenti

The purpose of this study is to compare the success rates of fat-graft myringoplasties harvesting adipose grafts from different donor sites (ear lobule vs abdomen). The clinical records of 61 patients (24 males and 37 females) who underwent fat-plug myringoplasty (FPM) were reviewed retrospectively. Fat from ear lobule (FEL) and abdominal fat were used as graft materials. The impact of age, gender, systemic diseases, topography of the perforation, utilization of fat graft materials of different origin on the tympanic membrane closure rate and the effect of FPM on hearing gain was analyzed. Chronic tympanic membrane (TM) perforations are a common problem in otolaryngology. However, there are controversies of how best to treat TM perforation. Recently, we successfully managed TM perforation with paper patch after trimming the perforated TM margin with the CO2 laser. The purpose of this report is to demonstrate the trial of this method and effectiveness. The authors conducted a retrospective case series from March 2000 to January 2005. Ninety patients underwent paper-patch myringoplasty with the CO2 laser. The procedure was performed in an office setting under local anesthesia. We

A retrospective study was performed on patients who underwent myringoplasty for either anterior or subtotal perforations over an 8-year period (from 1994 till 2004). We used the KTP-laser assisted anterior anchoring technique combining with anterior "pull-back" method. Patients' ages ranged from 6-62 years (median 36.5). The mean follow-up period was 2.8 years (minimum 6 months). The audiological results were analysed with the "Pytel software", which was developed in our department. As for the procedure, the drum remnant was freed from the malleus handle with the use of the laser and elevated

BACKGROUND: Tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) is the result of recurrent or chronic otitis media, iatrogenic or traumatic events. It may sometimes require a surgical repair, known as myringoplasty, with the purpose of rebuilding a barrier between the external and middle ear, and restoring a good hearing level.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to identify the prognostic factors that may affect the outcomes of myringoplasty.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was carried out by including all patients who had undergone myringoplasty for TMP in our Institution in the period
