Case report. Nasopharyngeal mucormycosis.

Successful management of nasopharyngeal mucormycosis in a 58-year-old leukemia patient is reported. High index of suspicion, localizing the disease to the nasopharynx, early diagnosis by biopsy, control of underlying debilitating leukemia, and aggressive therapeutic approach all contributed to the successful outcome. Review of the literature indicates this to be the first reported case of successful outcome of mucormycosis in a patient with acute myelogenous leukemia. Application and findings of computed tomography for evaluation of mucormycosis are discussed.

Nasopharyngeal reflux and neonatal apnea.

Although oropharyngeal dysfunction has been reported as a cause of dysphagia in newborns, to our knowledge oropharyngeal dysfunction and neonatal apnea have not been associated previously. We studied two infants in whom apnea and bradycardia developed primarily while feeding. The diagnosis was established by observation of the swallowing mechanism using cinefluoroscopy while the infant ingested a dilute barium meal. Thickened formula feedings and use of a special nipple resulted in complete cessation of apnea and bradycardia. Careful attention to the details that surround episodes of apnea is

Nasopharyngeal teratoma.--Report of a case.

A case of nasopharyngeal teratoma with the appearance of a hairy polyp in one month old infant is presented. The patient had a previous history of recurrent attacks of cough, dyspnea and cyanosis on being fed or in a certain body position (prone). The prone position shifted the tip of the tumor with its long stalk over the entrance of the larynx followed by upper airway obstruction. Prompt surgical extirpation prevented the risk of succeeding fatal respiratory event. This uncommon congenital teratoma arising from the nasopharynx should be taken into consideration in differential diagnosis of n

Retrospective Analysis of a Modified Irrigation Method for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Patients With Post-Radiation Nasopharyngeal Necrosis.

PURPOSE: Post-radiation nasopharyngeal necrosis (PRNN) is one of the most serious late effects of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) after radiotherapy. Standard conservative treatments are not always effective, and this study sought to investigate the feasibility of modified nasopharyngeal irrigation in the treatment of PRNN. METHODS: Between September 2011 and September 2018, 113 NPC patients with pathologically or radiologically diagnosed PRNN were analyzed retrospectively. All patients received the traditional conservative treatments of debridement of the necrotic tissues guided by an endosco

Nasopharyngeal brushing: a convenient and feasible sampling method for nucleic acid-based nasopharyngeal carcinoma research.

BACKGROUND: Tissue specimens for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) research are scarce because of sampling difficulties. Previous studies have suggested non-invasive nasopharyngeal brushing as an effective sampling method for NPC diagnosis. The present study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of nasopharyngeal brushing in the acquisition of NPC nucleic acids for research. METHODS: Nasopharyngeal brushing samples were acquired from 24 healthy individuals and 48 NPC patients. Tissues from 48 NPC and 18 nasopharyngitis patients were collected by endoscopic biopsy. The expression levels of tumor supp

Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis mimicking nasopharyngeal carcinoma on (18)F-FDG PET/CT in a young patient.

A 30-year-old woman presented with a painless left upper neck swelling for more than a week. Fibrolaryngoscope examination suggested nasopharyngeal carcinoma. FDG PET/CT was performed for an initial staging, which revealed intense activity in the soft tissue mass in the nasopharynx and cervical lymph nodes. However, biopsy from the nasopharyngeal lesion demonstrated tuberculosis.

Vertically transmitted nasopharyngeal infection of the human papillomavirus: does it play an aetiological role in nasopharyngeal cancer?

Despite identification of important risk factors, aetiology of nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) remained enigmatic. Oncogenic Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a cause of cervical and genital tract epithelial cancers, has recently been isolated from NPC tumour tissues, raising the question of whether HPV may play a role in NPC. Accumulating evidence showed that perinatal HPV transmission to newborns can occur through exposures to genital tract secretions, amniotic fluid, or blood during vaginal delivery in mothers with cervical HPV infection, with viral DNA fingerprint showing maternal-foetal concordance
