Association between change in sleep duration and posttraumatic stress symptoms in natural disaster victims: the mediating role of resilience.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the association between changes in sleep duration after disaster and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and the mediating role of resilience on the association. METHODS: Data were collected from 2951 Korean adults who were victims of a natural disaster and did not have any mental or medical illnesses before the event. They completed a long-term survey on changes in life for disaster victims using computer-aided personal interviews. Changes in sleep duration before and one month after experiencing a disaster were assessed using a self-reported que

Changes in alcohol consumption after a natural disaster: a study of Norwegian survivors after the 2004 Southeast Asia tsunami.

BACKGROUND: Many studies suggest that disaster exposure is related to a subsequent increase in alcohol consumption. Most of these studies have relied on retrospective self-reports to measure changes in alcohol use. The aim of the present study was to examine the association between disaster exposure and drinking behaviors more closely, analyzing data on both self-perceived changes in alcohol consumption and current drinking habits in groups with different extents of disaster exposure. METHODS: A sample of Norwegian adults (≥ 18 years) who resided in areas affected by the 2004 Southeast Asia t

Delayed post-traumatic stress and memory inflation of life-threatening events following a natural disaster: prospective study.

BACKGROUND: The causes of delayed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are debated, and the validity of late-onset PTSD has been questioned. AIMS: We aimed to examine predictors of delayed PTSD in a community sample of survivors of a natural disaster. METHOD: Norwegian survivors of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami (n = 532) responded to a questionnaire at 6 and 24 months post-disaster. The questionnaire measured PTSD symptoms, recalled exposure and immediate stress responses to the disaster, recalled perceived life threat, personality dimensions, social support and other subsequent adverse lif

Posttraumatic stress symptoms between parents and their children following a natural disaster: An integrated model under a dyadic approach.

OBJECTIVE: Various theories have been proposed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the effect of parental posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs) on their children. However, these theories focused on unique mechanisms for some factors and overlooked the combined role of different factors. This study aimed to construct a broad theoretical framework to comprehensively understand the mechanisms underlying the effect of parents' PTSSs on adolescents. We examined the combined role of parental PTSSs and marital conflict, and adolescents' self-differentiation, psychological inflexibility, and rumina

A massive natural disaster, the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the incidence of dialysis due to end-stage kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Disaster-related stress can increase blood pressure and the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. However, the role of massive disasters in the development of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) remains unknown. We investigated the incidence and different causes of dialysis initiation in patients with chronic kidney disease in a city affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. METHODS: This was a single-center, retrospective observational study. All patients who initiated or were treated with dialysis at Kesennuma City Hospital between 2007 and 2020 were enrolled. A short DSM-IV screening scale to detect posttraumatic stress disorder after a natural disaster in a Chinese population.

The objective of the study was to construct a short screening scale for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We used data from our previous study on PTSD among flood victims in 1998 and 1999 in Hunan, China, which was a representative population sample of 27,267 subjects from 16 to 94 years old. Multistage sampling was used to select the subjects from the flood areas and PTSD was ascertained with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: 4th Edition (DSM-IV). We randomly assigned 80% (n=21,762) of study subjects to construct the screening scale (construct model) and the remai

Understanding the Effectiveness of Emergency Medical Teams From Members' Perspectives: A Qualitative Analysis of Sustainability and Health System Strengthening in Natural Hazard-Related Disasters.

BACKGROUND: After natural hazards, Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) provide critical care when national systems are overwhelmed. While their short-term effectiveness is established, their contribution to long-term health system recovery remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: From the perspective of deployed members, this study explored the barriers and facilitators influencing the long-term effectiveness and sustainability of EMT interventions post-disaster. METHODS: This qualitative study used in-depth interviews with nine purposively sampled EMT members who had deployed to natural hazards. Using

Longitudinal Association Between Depressive Symptoms and Sleep Problems in Adolescents Following a Natural Disaster: Understanding the Role of Psychological Inflexibility.

Previous studies have investigated the temporal associations between depressive symptoms and sleep problems in traumatized adolescents. However, controversy remains regarding the directionality and underlying mechanisms of these associations, because within- and between-individual effects have not been differentiated. To examine this issue, the current study used the random-intercept cross lagged panel model (RI-CLPM) to assess the temporal associations between depressive symptoms, sleep problems and psychological inflexibility in adolescents following Typhoon Lekima. A sample of 1,341 adolesc

Natural disaster stress during pregnancy is linked to reprogramming of the placenta transcriptome in relation to anxiety and stress hormones in young offspring.

Prenatal stress can lead to long-term adverse effects that increase the risk of anxiety and other emotional disorders in offspring. The in utero underpinnings contributing to such phenotypes remain unknown. We profiled the transcriptome of placental specimens from women who lived through Hurricane Sandy during pregnancy compared to those pregnant during non-Sandy conditions. Following birth, longitudinal assessments were conducted in their offspring during childhood (~3-4 years old) to measure steroid hormones (in hair) and behavioral and emotional problems. This revealed a significant link be

Association between sense of coherence and health and well-being among older survivors of a natural disaster: a prospective outcome-wide study.

We examined whether pre-disaster Sense of Coherence (SOC) mitigated the impact of housing damage on health and well-being of older survivors after the 2011 Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. A panel survey was conducted in a city located 80 km west of the epicenter seven months before and three years after the disaster (3594 respondents). Among respondents with lighter property damage, higher SOC was inversely associated with mental distress (coefficient - 0.29, 95% CI (confidence interval) - 0.39, - 0.19, p < .01), unhappiness (coefficient - 0.33, 95% CI - 0.43, - 0.23, p < .01), low expectation o

Do current smokers use more cigarettes and become more dependent on nicotine because of psychological distress after a natural disaster?

Natural disasters increase nicotine dependence and cigarette consumption, but the exact mechanisms and conditions responsible for this increase are relatively unclear. This study explored whether posttraumatic stress and depressive symptoms were pathways to increased nicotine dependence and cigarette consumption after disaster exposure using a representative sample of current smokers who were living in New Orleans at the time Hurricane Katrina struck (n = 175), and a comparison sample of smokers from Memphis (n = 222) who were not directly impacted by Hurricane Katrina. We assessed whether nic

Drivers of natural disaster risk-reduction actions and their temporal dynamics: Insights from surveys during an imminent hurricane threat and its aftermath.

To improve preparedness for natural disasters, it is imperative to understand the factors that enable individual risk-reduction actions. This study offers such insights using innovative real-time (N = 871) and repeated (N = 255) surveys of a sample of coastal residents in Florida regarding flood preparations and their drivers during an imminent threat posed by Hurricane Dorian and its aftermath. Compared with commonly employed cross-sectional surveys, our methodology better represents relationships between preparedness actions undertaken during the disaster threat and their drivers derived fro
