Musicians report a high prevalence of annual musculoskeletal pain (86-89%), attributed to prolonged playing times consisting of repetitive static and dynamic muscle activity. The aim of this study was to explore, compare and synthesise evidence on electromyographic (EMG) muscle activity in neck, shoulder and spinal musculature between painful and asymptomatic instrumental musicians. Ovid, Wiley, Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched in August 2016 for cross-sectional studies that compared EMG activity of neck, shoulder and spinal musculature between musicians with musculoskeletal p

On subjects with unilateral vestibular dysfunction, the application of a vibratory stimulation (100 Hz) to the two mastoids and the vertex, and to the right and left dorsal neck muscles produces a nystagmus directed towards the good ear in 85% of patients. Fixation must be suppressed by Frenzel's glasses or video nystagmoscopy. To be significant this nystagmus must appear in at least 3 of the 5 vibratory stimulated sites. On healthy subjects nystagmus is present in 6% of cases but never in those below 30 years. In subjects affected by central vertigo, nystagmus was elicited in 10% of cases and

Unlike other modes of loading, the tolerance of the human neck in tension depends heavily on the load bearing capabilities of the muscles of the neck. Because of limitations in animal models, human cadaver, and volunteer studies, computational modeling of the cervical spine is the best way to understand the influence of muscle on whole neck tolerance to tension. Muscle forces are a function of the muscle's geometry, constitutive properties, and state of activation. To generate biofidelic responses for muscle, we obtained accurate three-dimensional muscle geometry for 23 pairs of cervical muscl

To investigate the role of proprioceptors of different skeletal muscles in postural control, in normal subjects and patients with unilateral labyrinthine dysfunction (ULD), the effect of vibration on these muscles was studied by postulography. The subjects comprised 59 normal subjects and 12 patients with ULD due to resection of acoustic tumours. Sagittal body sway was observed during vibration to the triceps surae, tibialis anterior and upper dorsal neck muscles. No significant change in sway was observed in the frontal plane in normal subjects. Significant differences between normal subjects

BACKGROUND: Neck functional capacity is clinically relevant in sports medicine for performance support, screening, and injury prevention in sports characterized by acceleration, contact, and sustained precision demands. Ultrasound can quantify local muscle morphology and may improve interpretation of neck performance beyond crude anthropometry (e.g., neck girth) and global strength indicators.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether sternocleidomastoid (SCM) cross-sectional area (CSA) and neck anthropometry are associated with neck function (strength, endurance, range of motion), and whether SCM morp

BACKGROUND: Trumpet playing requires precise embouchure, breath control, and postural support, engaging facial and respiratory muscles as well as muscles within the abdomen, thorax, and neck. Research on muscle activity during trumpet playing focuses mainly on embouchure and its involved facial muscles, whereas studies investigating torso muscles are scarce.
METHODS: In this observational study, the activity of the abdominal, thoracal, and neck muscles of 24 male professional trumpet players between 20-45 years of age were measured with surface electromyography (sEMG) during playing. Electrod

Long-duration spaceflight poses several challenges to human health, including muscle loss and fat deposition. To mitigate these effects, exercise countermeasures are prescribed. This study aimed to measure neck muscle size and composition changes with long-duration spaceflight using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and examine associations with in-flight exercise modality and volume. Nine astronauts (mission duration: 7.1 ± 1.8 months) underwent pre- and post-flight 3T Dixon MRI of the cervical spine. Cross-sectional area (CSA) and muscle fat fraction (MFF) were measured bilateral

BACKGROUND: MyotonPRO allows for the non-invasive assessment of the mechanical properties of muscles (stiffness, tension and viscoelastic properties of the muscle). It has found use in various anatomical areas, including the neck and back. Since neck and back pain are common musculoskeletal complaints an accurate and reliable device is essential for accurate diagnosis.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to review the literature to determine whether MyotonPRO device is a reliable tool for estimating mechanical properties of the neck and back muscles.
METHODS: A literature search was per

OBJECTIVES: The digastric muscles have important roles in swallowing, chewing, speech, and landmark identification during neck dissection. The posterior belly of the digastric muscle (PBDM) is often useful for defining boundaries in surgical neck dissection as it contributes to the carotid, submandibular, and submental triangles. The cadaveric prevalence rate of anatomic variations in the digastrics has been reported to be 31.4% of the population with most occurring in relation to the anterior belly of the digastric muscle (ABDM). Few reports describe variations in the PBDM. While anatomic var

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT)-defined skeletal muscle depletion and malnutrition are demonstrated as poor prognostic factors in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), however to date, have only been explored in isolation. We aimed to describe body composition profile and examine the impact of nutritional status as well as independently and concurrently occurring body composition features on overall survival, treatment completion, unplanned admissions and length of stay (LOS) in patients undergoing radiotherapy (RT) or chemoradiotherapy (CRT) of curative intent for HNC.

BACKGROUND: Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and glutamate are associated with some headache conditions, and purinergic (P2X) and glutamatergic N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-related processes in the medulla can modulate the effects of trigeminal nociceptive afferent inputs into the brainstem on craniofacial sensorimotor circuits. This study aimed to test whether neck muscle activity can be induced in rats by noxious stimulation of the frontal dura or superior sagittal sinus that involves P2X or NMDA receptor-dependent mechanisms.
METHODS: While electromyographic activities of neck and cran

Critical traffic situations, such as vehicle collisions and emergency manoeuvres, can cause an occupant to respond with reflex and voluntary actions. These affect the occupant's position and dynamic loading during interactions with the vehicle's restraints, possibly compromising their protective function. Electromyography (EMG) is a commonly used method for measuring active muscle response and can also provide input parameters for computer simulations with models of the human body. The recently introduced muscle-contraction (MC) sensor is a wearable device with a piezo-resistive element for me

PURPOSE: Pectoralis major muscle flaps (PMMF) are a commonly used reconstructive modality to repair head and neck defects. As the use of free flap reconstruction is increasingly practiced in the head and neck, the role of the PMMF may be changing as well. This study sought to analyze indications and outcomes for PMMF following head and neck resections from one surgeon's experience.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review from December 1, 2013 through September 30, 2017 at a tertiary care academic medical center. Indications for the PMMF were examined as well as surgical outcomes. Basic de
