A Profiling System for the Assessment of Individual Needs for Rehabilitation With Hearing Aids.

This study focuses on the development of a profiling system to specify the needs of hearing-aid candidates. As a basis for the profile of compensation needs, we used a slightly modified version of the Amsterdam Inventory of Disability and Handicap, combined with the well-known Client-Oriented Scale of Improvement (COSI). The first questionnaire results in scores for six audiological dimensions: detection, speech in quiet, speech in noise, localization, focus or discrimination, and noise tolerance. The goal of this study was to determine whether the six dimensions derived from the disability qu

Maternal morbidity in the first year after childbirth in Mombasa Kenya; a needs assessment.

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, few services specifically address the needs of women in the first year after childbirth. By assessing the health status of women in this period, key interventions to improve maternal health could be identified. There is an underutilised opportunity to include these interventions within the package of services provided for woman-child pairs attending child-health clinics. METHODS: This needs assessment entailed a cross-sectional survey with 500 women attending a child-health clinic at the provincial hospital in Mombasa, Kenya. A structured questionnaire, clin

Skin disorders among school children in rural Tanzania and an assessment of therapeutic needs.

Eight hundred and twenty primary school children were examined to assess the spectrum and prevalence of skin diseases in rural Tanzania. In all, 55% of the children had one or several skin disorders, but only 33% of all diagnoses in a cluster of 14% of the children required treatment. Tinea versicolor was found in 26.2%, pyoderma and dermatophytoses in less than 10%, while few children had scabies or eczematous lesions.

Assessment of urgent and ongoing contraceptive needs in an OB/GYN urgent care setting.

BACKGROUND: The potential that ongoing contraception and emergency contraception (EC) offer to reduce unplanned pregnancy and abortion is diminished by many barriers. Even when women seek care, their acute needs for those interventions may not be assessed. STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective chart review of charts of women potentially at risk for unplanned pregnancy who were provided care in an OB-GYN urgent care clinic in a tertiary care, training hospital. Information was collected about the patient's age group, her presenting complaint, the specialty of the resident who saw her and wheth

Needs assessment and social environment of people living with HIV/AIDS in Hong Kong.

The present study examined the needs and perceived social environment among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Hong Kong (N=289). Sizeable demands were expressed for medical treatment, provision of HIV-related information, financial assistance and psychological counselling. Physical health (about 38%) and social discrimination (about 24%) were the two commonly named 'most difficult aspects' of their life. In addition, over 50% felt that they were discriminated in different settings such as in the workplace and in social relationships. Social support was also often lacking among many PLWHA

Reliability and validity of a community needs assessment instrument for nursing homes in Taiwan.

Several studies have been conducted which identify the lack of nursing homes in the Taiwan area as a major problem. However, no research instruments were found which measure the perception of need for nursing homes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of a community needs assessment instrument for nursing homes in Taiwan, called the Perception Evaluation Tool (PET). A randomly selected sample of 319 subjects participated in the study. Results suggest the PET has appropriate reliability and validity.

Assessment of periodontal status and treatment needs of a disabled population using the CPITN.

The Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN) was used to assess the periodontal status of 213 handicapped persons attending seven institutions in Johannesburg. Fewer than 2% had healthy mouths, 8% had bleeding only, followed by calculus (46%), shallow pockets (40%) and deep pockets (4%). The mean number of sextants with bleeding or higher score was 5.9. Oral hygiene instruction was indicated for 98% and prophylaxis for 90% of the participants. The CPITN was easily used in the disabled population but may overestimate treatment need in view of the current understanding that periodo

The educational needs of people with systemic sclerosis: a cross-sectional study using the Dutch version of the Educational Needs Assessment Tool (D-ENAT).

The Dutch Educational Needs Assessment Tool (D-ENAT) systematically assesses educational needs of patients with rheumatic diseases. The present study aims to describe the educational needs of Dutch patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). The D-ENAT was sent to 155 SSc patients registered at the outpatient clinic of a university hospital. The D-ENAT consists of 39 items in seven domains. "Each domain has different number of items therefore we normalized each domain score: (domain score/maximum) × 100) and expressed in percentage to enable comparisons between domains." A total D-ENAT score (0-15

Education Research: Learning to Prognosticate: An Educational Needs Assessment with Senior Child Neurology Residents.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pediatric neuroprognostication is technically challenging and ethically complex. Despite its importance, little is known about how child neurology residents learn to estimate and communicate neurologic prognosis. Current educational interventions focus on communication but lack pediatric-specific focus. This exploratory qualitative study sought to describe how graduating residents conceptualize pediatric neuroprognostication, their educational experiences, and what gaps they identify in learning to prognosticate. METHODS: Semistructured, one-on-one virtual interview

Mapping Caregiver Needs' Assessment Tools for Family and Friend Caregivers: A Rapid Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Family and friend caregivers provide essential support across health and social care systems but remain inconsistently identified, assessed, and supported in routine practice. Although numerous caregiver needs' assessment instruments exist, many focus on burden, distress, or preparedness rather than explicitly eliciting caregiver-defined support needs, limiting their utility for care planning, care transitions, and system integration. METHODS: We conducted a rapid scoping review to identify and characterize caregiver needs' assessment tools developed for family and friend caregive

Advancing palliative medicine training in adolescent and young adult care: a needs assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs), defined as individuals aged 15-39 years, face unique medical, psychosocial, and existential challenges when living with life-limiting illness. Despite evidence supporting early palliative care integration, Canadian adult palliative care curricula lack formalized AYA-specific competencies. Healthcare providers consistently report insufficient preparation in this area. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional needs assessment survey was administered nationally to physicians who completed Canadian adult palliative care residency training between 201
