Recurrent Catatonia due to Episodic Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Catatonia is regarded as a diverse type of motor dysregulation syndrome that includes mutism, immobility, catalepsy, negativism, stereotypies, and echo phenomena. Catatonia is known to coexist with a wide range of physical and mental health conditions, including mood disorders, schizophrenia, autoimmune disorders, and metabolic abnormalities. Albeit, the association between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and catatonia is underreported, and mechanisms are not well elucidated. Study. In this study, we present a case of a 36-year-old woman who developed episodes of catatonia duri

Healthcare provider burn-out: A war with uncertainty.

Referring to provider burn-out as a foe to be conquered is a palatable representation that fits within a familiar medical narrative-combating disease, fighting illness, curing and vanquishing the cancer. Even the words we use to describe our daily work-"on the front lines" or "in the trenches" or "fighting the good fight"-places us on a metaphorical battlefield. Is provider burn-out inflicted by another entity, and if so by whom or by what? Is it, by contrast, a disease or a condition? Is burn-out something that just happens or is it created? Clonazepam withdrawal-induced catatonia.

BACKGROUND: Catatonia is a often a complex syndrome. It has been divided into categories of simple and malignant, with the latter being a more severe form involving autonomic instability and/or fever and having a higher mortality rate. OBJECTIVE: There have been only two cases presented in the literature postulating benzodiazepine-withdrawal as a possible trigger for malignant catatonia. Here, the authors present a case of catatonia likely caused by abrupt benzodiazepine discontinuation; they also discuss neurobiological mechanisms relating to catatonia. METHOD: The authors report on a 60-ye

Efficacy of Zolpidem Tartrate in Benzodiazepine-Refractory Catatonia: A Case Report.

This study aims to describe the clinical response to a zolpidem challenge in a patient with benzodiazepine-refractory catatonia and highlight its potential role as an alternative pharmacologic intervention when standard therapies are ineffective or contraindicated. We report the case of a 25-year-old woman with schizophrenia and severe catatonia admitted to an inpatient psychiatric unit. Catatonic features included psychomotor slowing, mutism, negativism, staring, and stupor. The patient demonstrated no clinical improvement with benzodiazepine therapy and was unable to pursue electroconvulsive

Rethinking Catatonia in Neurodevelopmental Conditions: Toward a Refined Typology and Research Framework.

Catatonia is a transdiagnostic syndrome observed across psychiatric, medical, and developmental disorders. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR), it is not classified as a stand-alone disorder but as a specifier or syndrome that accompanies other conditions. This review examines the current state of knowledge on catatonia in children, adolescents, and individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly autism spectrum disorder and intellectual developmental disorders. Several DSM-5-TR criteria overlap with baseline behavio

Case report: Diagnostic challenges in an adolescent case of autistic catatonia.

Catatonia is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome involving a constellation of psychomotor disturbances including catalepsy, waxy flexibility, stupor, mutism, negativism, agitation, posturing, stereotypes, mannerisms, grimacing, echolalia, and echopraxia. Catatonia occurs in several conditions including psychotic, affective and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent deficits in communication, social interaction, restricted interests, repetitive behaviours and sensory sensitivities. Catatonia and Cognitive Impairments: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Catatonia is an underdiagnosed and undertreated neuropsychiatric syndrome characterized by catalepsy, negativism, mutism, muscular rigidity, and mannerism, often accompanied by autonomic instability and fever. Although there is growing interest in studying cognitive impairments before and after catatonia, little is known about the cognitive features of the syndrome. METHODS: This systematic review was registered at PROSPERO (CRD42022299091). Using a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) approach, we searched PubMed, ScienceDirect, and PsycArti

Updates on Somatoform Disorders (SFMD) in Parkinson's Disease and Dementia with Lewy Bodies and discussion of phenomenology.

Somatoform Disorders (SFMD) were recently described in Parkinson Disease (PD) and Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB). The present paper updates the observations in our cohort of patients and further details clinical phenomenology. Of 3178 patients consecutively referred to our Institutions from 1999, 1572 subjects had neurodegenerative diseases and 1718 psychiatric disorders. After 2-9 years of follow up, 488 patients were labelled as PD, 415 as Alzheimer Disease, 162 as DLB, 48 as Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, 48 as Multiple System Atrophy and 49 as Fronto-Temporal Dementia. Representation of the internal world in catatonic schizophrenia.

Catatonia, which until 1874 was called atonic melancholia, has remained a relative mystery despite many advances in the understanding of schizophrenia. Its typical symptoms are certainly distinctive: a motionless stupor, bizarre posturing, waxen flexibility, religious delusions, stereotyped movements, negativism, loss of will, confusion, and recurrent frenzy (Kahlbaum 1874). The processes which motivate this particular derailment of self and body have been sought in various organic etiologies, with little success. Arieti (1974) proposes several reasons for the paucity of case studies of the tr

Negative affect differentiation and adherence during treatment for thalassemia.

BACKGROUND: Although research has demonstrated the detrimental effects of excessive negative affect on treatment adherence and morbidity in chronic illness, rarely have researchers investigated the benefits of awareness of negative emotional experiences during treatment. PURPOSE: In this investigation, we examined the association of negative affect differentiation (the ability to report negative emotional experiences as separate and distinct from each other,) to treatment adherence in adult patients with the congenital blood disorder thalassemia. METHOD: Negative affect differentiation was a

Personality and cognitive processes: self-criticism and different types of rumination as predictors of suicidal ideation.

Self-criticism and rumination have been related to suicidality. In the present study, we investigated the extent to which different types of rumination (brooding and reflection) mediate the relationship between self-criticism and suicidal ideation. Two hundred and thirty-two healthy adults completed a range of psychological inventories at Time 1 and were followed up approximately 3 months later (Time 2). Brooding was more strongly associated with suicidal ideation than reflection. Hierarchical regression analyses confirmed that among those who completed measures at both time points, brooding r

The effects of rumination and negative cognitive styles on depression: a mediation analysis.

Research on cognitive models of depression has identified negative cognitive styles and rumination as risk factors for depression. The present study examined the hypothesis that rumination mediates the effect of negative cognitive styles on depression. Specifically, we evaluated the differential effects of two aspects of rumination, characterized by brooding and reflection, on the relationship between negative cognitive styles and level of depressive symptoms. A total of 115 college students and 38 patients suffering from depressive disorders completed a battery of questionnaires measuring lev

Ruminative self-focus, negative life events, and negative affect.

Ruminative thinking is believed to exacerbate the psychological distress that follows stressful life events. An experience-sampling study was conducted in which participants recorded negative life events, ruminative self-focus, and negative affect eight times daily over one week. Occasions when participants reported a negative event were marked by higher levels of negative affect. Additionally, negative events were prospectively associated with higher levels of negative affect at the next sampling occasion, and this relationship was partially mediated by momentary ruminative self-focus. Why ruminators are poor problem solvers: clues from the phenomenology of dysphoric rumination.

The phenomenology of dysphoric rumination and its consequences for problem solving were explored in 3 studies. In Study 1, self-focused rumination, compared with distraction, led dysphoric participants to rate their own biggest problems as severe and unsolvable and to report a reduced likelihood of actually implementing their solutions. Clues into the mechanisms behind these findings were explored in Study 2. The results showed that dysphoric ruminative thought is characterized by a focus on personal problems combined with a negative tone, self-criticism, and self-blame for problems as well as

[Psychologic iatrogenic disease in the postsurgical child].

In the present paper, we comment on the psychological and emotional disorders occurring after surgery. We surveyed 150 children that were admitted in several surgical units of our Children's Hospital. We used the Vernon's test in a questionaire. We reached a high level of comprehension. As a result, 121 valid questionaires were returned. The considerable amount of information was statistically studied with a computer, obtaining data on the following aspects: Filiation, frequency and percentage of every answer. Post-hospitalization behaviour evaluated by Vernon's test. Partial and total results

Repetitive negative thinking is associated with cognitive function decline in older adults: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Psychological problems such as depression and anxiety increase the risk of cognitive impairment in older adults. But mechanisms on the effect of psychological disorder on cognitive function is inconclusive. Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a core symptom of a number of common psychological disorders and may be a modifiable process shared by many psychological risk factors that contribute to the development of cognitive impairment. RNT may increase the risk of cognitive impairment. However, there are fewer studies related to RNT and cognitive function, and there is a lack of ep

Gender Invariance and Psychometric Properties of the Nonproductive Thoughts Questionnaire for Children.

Perseverative cognitions-rumination and worry-can contribute to mental and somatic health problems in adolescence. Girls usually report stronger rumination or worry than boys even in earlier years across the development age spectrum. Our aim was to test the gender invariance and psychometric properties of the Nonproductive Thoughts Questionnaire for Children (NPTQ-C). Study 1 involved 1,572 students (mean age = 15.39 years, SD = 2.26; 49% boy) recruited representatively from local schools. We applied confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to test the measurement model of perseverative cognitions.

A comparison of intimate partner violence between Jordanian nurses and Jordanian women.

Intimate partner violence is a serious international problem. It is not known if the extent of intimate partner violence for Jordanian nurses is similar to that of Jordanian women. Until the rate is known, implementation of nursing interventions for Jordanian women may be thwarted. The study purpose was to determine the rate of intimate partner violence among Jordanian nurses working in governmental health settings in a northern city of Jordan and to compare the rate to published statistics for a community sample of Jordanian women. A cross-sectional survey design was used for this study. A st
