Rewriting abortion: deploying medical records in jurisdictional negotiation over a forbidden practice in Senegal.

Boundary work refers to the strategies deployed by professionals in the arenas of the public, the law and the workplace to define and defend jurisdictional authority. Little attention has been directed to the role of documents in negotiating professional claims. While boundary work over induced abortion has been extensively documented, few studies have examined jurisdictional disputes over the treatment of abortion complications, or post-abortion care (PAC). This study explores how medical providers deploy medical records in boundary work over the treatment of complications of spontaneous and

Negotiation over self-control and activity: an analysis of balancing in the repertoires of Finnish healthy lifestyles.

This study analyses arguments for and against the notion of healthy lifestyles, and the construction of responsibility for health, in group discussions in Finland. With data from four focus groups, we identified five interpretative repertoires: a strong activity repertoire reflects the dominant cultural value of health and emphasizes self-control. Three other repertoires--illness, external barriers, and weak character--share the underlying values of the activity repertoire, but exemplify situations where the individual lacks control, seeking to justify deviations from the norm of activity. Negotiability of MB2 root canals using rotary or reciprocating systems: a randomized clinical trial.

This randomized clinical trial evaluated the ability to negotiate second mesiobuccal (MB2) root canals in maxillary molars using nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments in rotary and reciprocating kinematics. A total of 110 patients with MB2 canals were randomly assigned to two groups: EL - Easy Logic2 rotary instruments (n = 57) and X1B - MKLife X1 Blue reciprocating instruments (n = 53). Canals reached to full working length (FWL) were classified as "negotiable". In the X1B group, 96.2% of MB2 canals were negotiable, compared to 86% in the EL group, with no statistically significant difference (p

"This does not sound like me"? Vocal identity negotiation in one-to-one voice teaching.

BACKGROUND: In one-to-one voice teaching, teachers frequently evaluate and demand alterations toward idealized vocal targets. However, there is a paucity of research exploring the identity negotiation processes students undergo when exposed to unfamiliar vocal productions. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: This qualitative study explores students' understanding of the teacher-prescribed "correct voice" and traces their identity negotiation trajectory from their original voice to the mandated vocal output. METHODS: Utilizing a qualitative approach, in-depth data were collected from vocal students and analyzed

Negotiation impasses as meaningful outcomes: How AI is changing the cost structure of walking away.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is often expected to improve negotiation by strengthening information processing and analytical consistency. We argue that its effects on impasses are more selective. Extending the impasse cause, type, and resolution (ICTR) model, we distinguish two pathways. The first pathway is analytical augmentation: AI can reduce unwanted impasses caused by misunderstanding, poor option generation, and coordination failure. The second pathway runs through behavioral flexibility: Humans sometimes reach mutually acceptable agreements through aspiration adjustment, face-saving, a

Trade, power, and public health: a political economy analysis of Thailand's CPTPP negotiation process.

BACKGROUND: The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) has generated intense debate in Thailand, concerning its implications for public health, particularly intellectual property, and access to medicines. During 2018-2022, Thailand undertook an extended in-country process to provide evidence on its economic opportunity and public health challenges for the Cabinet decision. However, there is no evidence indicating whether Thailand has decided to join the CPTPP. This study examines Thailand's CPTPP negotiation process using a political economy framework, fo

From Prediction to Horizon: Clinicians' Negotiations of AI-Driven Personal Prognoses in Clinical Practice.

Computational methods and tools under the label 'artificial intelligence' (AI) are increasingly promoted as solutions to the challenges of under-resourced and understaffed healthcare systems, with predictive modelling positioned as a means to improve efficiency and individualise care. Yet little is known about how predictive algorithms are taken up in the everyday practices of clinical decision-making. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork with Danish cardiologists working with the CARDIAIHD algorithm, this article examines how AI-driven personal prognoses intersect with clinical reasoning and org

'Is it in your basic personality?' Negotiations about traits and context in diagnostic interviews for personality disorders.

What does it mean to claim that somebody's personality is disordered? The aim in this paper is to examine how the process of diagnosing personality disorders (PD) unfolds on a practical level. We take an in-depth look at PD interviews, paying close attention to the occasional discrepancies in the clinicians' and the patients' approaches to generalising the behaviour of patients to describe their personality. Clinicians are guided by the medical model and structured interviews in their approach. We regard the interview situation as interplay between the institution, the clinician and the patien

The roles of women empowerment on attitude for safer sex negotiation among Indonesian married women.

The situation of low women empowerment in household settings might influence women's attitude and ability to negotiate for protected sex in their marital relationship. This study aimed to investigate the association between women empowerment factors and the attitude for safer sex negotiation among Indonesian married women. The secondary data of 28,934 individual records of married women retrieved from the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS) was used. The dependent variable was the attitude for safer sex negotiation measured by women's acceptance toward a justification to ask he

Negotiating existential conflicts in later life: an empirically informed analysis of gender and age in psychotherapy with older adults.

BACKGROUND: This article explores the intersection between age and gender in a psychotherapeutic context with older adults through an existential lens. While awareness of gender- and age-related biases in mental health care is growing, their combined effects and the normative implications for clinical practice remain underexplored. The existential perspective allows psychological symptoms and personal struggles to be understood in relation to the fundamental conditions of human existence, against the backdrop of this intersection and broader structural conditions. METHODS: A secondary qualitat

Negotiating uncertainty and responsibility after a vestibular schwannoma diagnosis: a qualitative study of meaning-making and surgical decision-making.

BACKGROUND: A diagnosis of vestibular schwannoma (VS) confronts patients with complex treatment decisions under conditions of uncertainty. While previous research has focused on treatment outcomes, symptom trajectories, and predictors of treatment choice, less is known about how patients psychologically process the diagnosis and construct meaning before surgery. This study explored how patients experience uncertainty, regain agency, and negotiate responsibility during the preoperative period. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with twelve patients who underwent surgical resectio

Negotiating Intimacy and Silence: Family Disclosure Strategies Among Young Chinese Men Who Have Sex With Men Living With HIV.

This study examines how young Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV navigate the disclosure or concealment of their sexual orientation and HIV status within family contexts shaped by Confucian moral norms. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 24 participants and a constructivist grounded theory approach, the study identifies five disclosure strategies: prior disclosure of sexual orientation followed by HIV disclosure, prior disclosure of sexual orientation with withheld HIV disclosure, simultaneous disclosure of both identities, non-disclosure of both identities, and HIV discl

Women's attitudes towards negotiating safe sexual practices in Nigeria: Do family structure and decision-making autonomy play a role?

BACKGROUND: The risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is related to women's sexual attitudes, beliefs, and power dynamics within marriages in developing countries. Despite the interventions towards improving women's sexual health and well-being, women are disproportionately affected by the risk of STIs transmission compared with their male counterparts in most sub-Saharan African countries including Nigeria. This study examined the roles of family structure and decision-making autonomy on women's attitudes towards negotiating s

Negotiating sexual safety in the era of biomedical HIV prevention: relationship dynamics among male couples using pre-exposure prophylaxis.

Up to two-thirds of new cases of HIV transmission between gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in the USA are attributed to primary relationships. Understanding the relationship dynamics and sexual agreements of male-male couples can provide insight into HIV transmission patterns and prevention needs in this population. The daily use of antiretroviral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective in preventing HIV, but its negotiation and use within social and intimate relationship contexts remain understudied. We conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with 20 male

Navigating and Negotiating Sexual Identity and Attraction: A Queer Analysis of Heterosexual-Identified Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Heterosexual-identified men who have sex with men (H-MSM) defy dominant sexuality frameworks that assume coherence between sexual identity, attraction, and behavior. While extant models of sexual minority and heterosexual identity and attraction presume that H-MSM experience identity confusion and crisis, little research has examined how H-MSM experience sexual identity and attraction. This article is framed by Queer Theory and utilizes interpretative phenomenology to explore how a qualitative sample of 10 H-MSM navigate and negotiate their sexual identity and attraction. Results demonstrate t

Negotiating and Struggling for a New Life: Stigma, Spirituality, and Coping Strategies of People Living with HIV in Myanmar.

Although enacted and internalized stigma is a continuing problem for people living with HIV (PLWH) in Southeast Asia, there is little understanding of how PLWH cope with discrimination, exclusion, and other negative outcomes caused by HIV-related stigmatization. This article aims to bridge this gap by analyzing the lived experiences of HIV-related stigmatization and coping strategies among 30 people with HIV in Myanmar, a country heavily influenced by religion, especially Buddhism. Among the 30 study participants, 20 were female and 10 were male, with ages ranging from 18 to 50 years. Through
