Mesenchymal tumours of the thorax: CT findings and pathological features.

Mesenchymal tumours of the thorax are uncommon and may originate from the muscle, bone, cartilage, vessel, nerves, fat and fibrous tissue. These tumours occur at different sites including the lung, pleura, mediastinum or chest wall. Mesenchymal tumours tend to show protean and non-specific imaging characteristics. However, in some instances, the imaging characteristics of the tumour may allow a specific diagnosis to be made, such as with lipoid or vascular tumours.

Choroid plexus papilloma in a mature cystic teratoma of ovary: A rare case report.

Mature cystic teratoma of the ovary is the most common type of germ cell tumor. It constitutes approximately 20% of all ovarian neoplasms. As a rare occurrence, however, several types of benign and malignant tumours developing secondarily in dermoid cysts have been reported. Those of central nervous origin are almost exclusively gliomas of astrocytic, ependymal or oligodendroglial lineage. Choroid plexus tumors are unusual intracranial tumors which comprised of only 0.4-0.6% of all brain tumors. These are neuroectodermal in origin and similar in structure to a normal choroid plexus in the form

Incidental Finding of an Aspergillus Pseudoaneurysm in the Ascending Aorta of an Immunocompetent Patient.

Pseudoaneurysms of the ascending aorta are rare, yet they are life-threatening conditions and usually associated with poor outcomes due to insidious presentation. Many different etiologies have been associated with aortic pseudoaneurysms including; atherosclerosis, infections, connective tissue disorders, and traumatic causes. In addition, aortic pseudoaneurysms have been reported following thoracic surgeries, including aortic valve replacements, aortic dissection repair, and coronary artery bypass grafting. Aspergillus is amongst the infectious etiologies of pseudoaneurysms. Aspergillus speci

Angiogenesis in urothelial tumors of the upper urinary tract.

Angiogenesis is an essential process in the progression of malignant tumors. Tumors of the ureter and renal pelvis account for 5% of all urinary tract neoplasms. Little is known about angiogenesis in upper urinary tract urothelial tumors. We tried to demonstrate angiogenesis by using three endothelial markers CD31, CD34, von Willebrand factor and one pericytes marker (alpha-smooth muscle actin) in 26 cases. The pattern of CD31 immunolabelling was more complex and extensive than the vessel pattern shown by CD34 or factor VIII staining. In non-invasive tumors we observed that angiogenesis proces

[Clinically-amyopathic dermatomyositis: presentation of three cases].

Dermatomyositis is a connective tissue disease which has several factors involved in its etiology. Recently, the existence of a sub-type called amyopathic dermatomyositis has been accepted, whose cutaneous manifestations are indistinguishable from the ones that appear in the classic form of the disease. However, it is different from the classic form in that clinical findings of muscular involvement are initially absent. The association of these two sets of symptoms with the possible presence of an underlying neoplastic process has been described on numerous occasions, and has been the subject

[Histological findings on the relation between elastosis and breast neoplasms and dysplasia].

Connective tissue changes with particular reference to elastosis in malignant and dysplastic breasts are studied. Hyperelastosis was closely associated with carcinoma particular with scirrhous type also in the perineoplastic area; on the contrary the percentage of the phenomena in benign displastic disease is significantly low. Elastosis was located around carcinomatous tissue, mammary neoplastic ducts and also around veins and as scattered foci in the stroma. The site of production of elastic fibers is discussed. Elastosis accompanying carcinoma is considered more than a simple association bu

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor, mixed connective tissue variant, of the mandible: report of a case and review of the literature.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome that results in renal phosphate wasting with hypophosphatemia. In most cases, the underlying cause of TIO is a small mesenchymal neoplasm that is often difficult to detect, resulting in delayed diagnosis. One such neoplasm is the phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor, mixed connective tissue variant (PMTMCT), an unusual entity with unique morphologic and biochemical features. Most of these tumors are found at appendicular sites with only rare cases reported in the jaws. We describe a PMTMCT involving the mandible in a patient with a p

Primary umbilical adenocarcinoma. A case report and review of literature.

A case of primary adenocarcinoma of the umbilicus is reported along with a review of the literature and discussion of possible origins of glandular tissue within this area. Multiple connections are present within the umbilicus (vascular, lymphatic, and embryologic) that may give this area access to metastatic lesions. The primary tumors may originate within the usual umbilical tissue (skin and soft tissue). Glands that are not normally present in the region of the umbilicus rarely develop malignant neoplasms. As postulated, glandular tissue may arise either as metaplasia from squamous epitheli

[Recurrence of a Desmoid Tumour in a Scar at the Donor Site of a Latissimus Dorsi Flap].

A desmoid tumour, also known as aggressive fibrous tumour or desmoid fibromatosis, is a rare, benign tumour originating from connective tissue cells. Desmoid tumours account for approximately 0.03+% of all neoplasms and less than 3+% of all soft tissue tumours. The estimated incidence in the general population is 2 to 4 cases per million people per year [1]. Desmoid tumours are characterised by aggressive growth but typically do not metastasize. They often occur in young adults and preferably affect specific body regions such as the abdomen, shoulder, chest, or extremities. The exact cause of

Perineal hernia repair using an autologous tunica vaginalis communis in nine intact male dogs.

Perineal hernia in dogs is very problematic and mostly requires surgical reconstruction of the weak pelvic diaphragm. Tissue or synthetic grafts have been used for the correction after failure of the conventional herniorrhaphy. Aim of this clinical trial was to assess the possible use of the autologous tunica vaginalis communis as a free graft for perineal hernia repair in intact male dogs. Seven unilateral and 2 bilateral perineal hernias in nine intact male dogs free from testicular and scrotal neoplasms were included in this study. The median surgical time for unilateral herniorrhaphy was 7

Elastofibromatous changes in giant cell fibroma and amalgam tattoo: Unusual findings in common oral lesions.

Several cases of elastofibromatous lesion affecting the oral mucosa have been reported. Clinically, these lesions may appear as small exophytic lesions or less often as white lesions. Therefore, fibrous hyperplasia and leukoplakia are not uncommonly considered in clinical differential diagnosis. Microscopically, elastic and fibrous connective tissue deposition is seen. Rarely, elastofibromatous changes can be detected when assessing intraoral lesions, including cysts, salivary gland neoplasms, and epithelial dysplasia. Here we report two oral lesions showing elastofibromatous changes, expandin

[Abdominal wall repair after total resection of desmoid fibroma in a patient with diabetes mellitus type 1].

Desmoid fibroma (DF) is a rare connective tissue tumor comprising about 0.03-0.13% of all neoplasms. DF has a low potential for malignant transformation, but it is characterized by aggressive course and unfavorable prognosis. The main contingent of patients consists of women of reproductive age. Despite the nearly two-century history of study, there are certain unsolved problems including endocrine problems associated with this disease. We report a 30-year-old female with DF and diabetes mellitus type 1. Total resection of the affected right rectus abdominis muscle was performed in a single bl

Case report and literature review: cardiac tamponade as a complication of pericardial extramedullary hematopoiesis.

Pericardial effusion can cause cardiac tamponade physiology with resultant cardiogenic shock and death. Myelofibrosis, the replacement of marrow cavity by fibrous connective tissue, is a secondary complication of a group of disorders known as myeloproliferative neoplasms, which are clonal processes characterized by abnormal proliferative growth of one or more hematopoietic lineages. One consequence of myelofibrosis is the development of hematopoiesis at other anatomic sites, most commonly the spleen and liver, a phenomenon known as extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH). Herein we report a case of

A case-control study of prosthetic implants and selected chronic diseases.

We examined the association between prosthetic nonbreast implants and selected malignant neoplasms, connective tissue disorders, and neurologic diseases. We conducted a case-control study from an insurance claims database. We selected controls who had diseases for which no association with implants have been claimed or reported. Data were analyzed using both tabular and polytomous regression analysis methods, including methods to account for the large number of comparisons. All analyses exhibited positive associations between implants (both silicone and metal) and neurologic conditions, especi

Spatiotemporal expression pattern of neuroepithelial stem cell marker nestin suggests a role in dermal homeostasis, neovasculogenesis, and tumor stroma development: a study on embryonic and adult human skin.

BACKGROUND: Whereas keratinocytic bulge stem cells are well characterized, comparably little is known about cutaneous mesenchymal stem cells. The follicular connective tissue sheath is proposed as a niche for dermal stem cells. OBJECTIVE: Because the neuroepithelial stem cell marker nestin represents a marker for mesenchymal stem cells in various tissues, our aim was to characterize its spatiotemporal expression pattern in the skin with special reference to the follicular mesenchyme. METHODS: We studied immunohistochemically nestin expression over the course of human cutaneous embryogenesis,

Ulcerated dystrophic calcinosis cutis secondary to localised linear scleroderma.

Dystrophic calcinosis is a more common form of calcinosis cutis; calcium salts are deposited secondary to local inflammation, tissue damage and degeneration. Various conditions can cause dystrophic calcinosis, including connective tissue disease, infection, inflammatory processes, chronic venous stasis, cutaneous neoplasm and trauma. We report a case of ulcerated cutaneous calcinosis associated with a localised linear scleroderma or morphea. Healing of the ulcerations took place after four months of treatment with colchicine 1 mg per day.

A practical approach to the diagnosis of mixed epithelial and mesenchymal tumours of the uterus.

The current 2014 World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of mixed epithelial and mesenchymal tumours of the uterus includes categories of carcinosarcoma, adenosarcoma, adenofibroma, adenomyoma and atypical polypoid adenomyoma, the last two lesions being composed of an admixture of benign epithelial and mesenchymal elements with a prominent smooth muscle component. In this review, each of these categories of uterine neoplasm is covered with an emphasis on practical tips for the surgical pathologist and new developments. In particular, helpful clues in the distinction between carcinosarco

Musculoskeletal syndromes associated with malignancy.

Evidence has been presented supporting a causal relationship between malignancies and musculoskeletal syndromes. This discussion has dealt primarily with lesser known relationships, more common associations such as hypertrophic osteoarthropathy and dermatomyositis being reviewed elsewhere. The ones discussed herein closely mimic primary connective tissue diseases and offer an insight into the study of the pathogenesis of these primary diseases. In view of the natural history of malignant disease, the hope for such patients arises from the physicians early diagnosis and treatment of the underly

CLINICAL/METHODICAL ISSUE: Cystic pancreatic lesions (CPL) are diagnosed with increasing frequency. Because up to 60% of CPL are classified as malignant or premalignant, every CPL should be fully investigated and clarified. Serous CPL with low risk of malignancy must be differentiated from mucinous CPL with relevant potential malignancy (intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm IPMN) and mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN) as well as from harmless pseudocysts. STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS: Cross-sectional imaging with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a crucial ro
