Embodiment, identity formation, and psychological late effects in adolescent and emerging adult cancer survivors.

OBJECTIVE: A cancer experience may complicate how young survivors relate to their bodies. To enhance our understanding, it is necessary to move beyond a narrow focus on bodily appearance. The current study examines how the multidimensional construct of embodiment is related to the developmental trajectories of identity formation and psychological late effects in young survivors. METHODS: Survivors completed self-report questionnaires on embodiment at Timepoint 4 and on identity synthesis and confusion, posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), cancer-related worries, and benefit finding at Timepo

Structural links from trait emotional intelligence to life satisfaction and depressive symptoms in women with breast cancer: post-traumatic responses as mediators.

PURPOSE: The diagnosis of a disease such as breast cancer (BC) can be experienced as a sudden, unexpected, and life-threatening event accompanied by considerable uncertainty. This experience can precipitate the development of post-traumatic symptoms and depression. Conversely, certain individuals exhibit the capacity to reframe this traumatic event and transform it into an opportunity for personal growth. Existing research shows that individuals with high trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) tend to experience fewer post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTS), and greater post-traumatic growth (PT

Psychological resilience and post-traumatic stress disorder as chain mediators between personality traits and cognitive functioning in patients with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Personality is a unique behavioral trait; cognition is how an individual knows and understands things. It is essential for everyday daily living. In patients with breast cancer, despite the growing body of research on personality and cognitive functioning, exploration of the underlying mechanisms is still relatively scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of Big Five personality traits on cognitive functioning and the mediating role of psychological resilience and post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) between personality traits and cognitive functioning in pati

Guided self-help as intervention for traumatic stress in parents of children with cancer: conceptualization, intervention strategies, and a case study.

Being a parent of a child diagnosed with cancer poses an enormous stressor. Indeed, several parents have difficulties adjusting to such a situation and react with symptoms of traumatic stress, depression, and reduced quality of life. However, there is little conceptual work on behavioral mechanisms that contribute to suboptimal adaptation in these parents. The authors present a conceptualization in which experiential avoidance and rumination are suggested to contribute to increased levels of traumatic stress and suboptimal adaption. Based on this conceptualization, a recently developed interve

The valence of attentional bias and cancer-related rumination in posttraumatic stress and posttraumatic growth among women with breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of self-reported attentional bias on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and posttraumatic growth (PTG) through the potential mediator of cancer-related rumination. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey design was used and women with breast cancer (N=170) were recruited. MEASURES: Attentional biases, cancer-related ruminations, PTSD symptoms, and PTG were assessed. RESULTS: Negative attentional bias and negative cancer-related rumination were positively related to PTSD symptoms following cancer diagnosis and treatments, but they were not related to PTG

Evaluation of posttraumatic psychological problems in cancer patients.

The introduction of the diagnosis 'posttraumatic stress disorder' (PTSD) in cancer patients in the diagnostic nomenclature and the application of assessment to investigate prevalence, risk factors and comorbidity are discussed. The diagnosis PTSD in cancer patients makes it necessary to modify the trauma criteria. Data to identify patients at risk for developing PTSD in the group of cancer patients are incomplete. Prospective, longitudinal studies are needed to define the characteristics and course of PTSD in the cancer setting. With these data it would be possible to identify the population a

[Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): the syndrome with multiple faces].

We choose to discuss from the PTSD's point of view because this diagnostic reference is commonly used. We wish outline its restrictive sight which could prevent the professional from having a diagnosis of PTSD. We don't want to say there is a PTSD everywhere but it appears to us that a traumatic reading can be a precious advantage for the clinician to establish a real therapeutic relation with some patients. Post-traumatic syndrome differs from the majority of other diagnostic categories as it includes in its criteria the presumptive cause of the trauma (criterion A). In the case that this syn

Holocaust cancer patients: a comparative study.

There is as yet no consensus on the long-term effects of severe life-threatening stresses. In an earlier study (Baider et al. 1992), we gained some understanding of this issue by addressing a specific question: How do individuals who have undergone severe stress in the past cope with a current stress? We investigated whether severe stress occurring in the past had a long-term effect on present coping capabilities. We addressed the question by studying a group of Holocaust survivors (severe past stress) who were diagnosed as having cancer (current stress) and compared them to a matched group of

Advance care planning impact on caregivers and end-of-life care in advanced cancer.

BACKGROUND: Advance care planning (ACP) may improve outcomes for patients with advanced cancer and their family caregivers, but the optimal approach is not known. This study compared the impact of facilitated versus patient-directed ACP on caregiver psychological symptoms and perceptions of goal-concordant end-of-life (EOL) care. METHODS: Adult patients with advanced solid tumors and their caregivers were recruited from 8 oncology clinics in western Pennsylvania. Participants were randomly assigned to complete facilitated ACP with a trained nurse facilitator or patient-directed ACP using writ

Holding it together: a longitudinal study of psychological distress and associated factors in mothers with cancer.

BACKGROUND: Women with cancer tend to report higher levels of psychological distress than men with cancer. A deeper understanding of how modifiable psychological factors are related to psychological distress in mothers with cancer could inform targeted prevention strategies. The aim of this study was to investigate how the modifiable psychological factors; parenting concerns, self-efficacy, and emotion regulation strategies, are associated with symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and posttraumatic stress in mothers with cancer. METHODS: In 2023, 222 mothers with cancer, aged 25–60 years,

Resilience as a mediator of quality of life in cancer patients in healthcare services.

Quality of life is a critical outcome in oncology, influencing treatment adherence and patient satisfaction. Haematology patients face psychological challenges, including emotional distress, depression and PTSD, which can affect their quality of life. Resilience and social support are protective factors that help patients cope with these challenges. This study aimed to assess the psychological adjustment of haematology patients by examining psychological outcomes (PTSD and depression), psychological resources (resilience and perceived social support), and quality of life. It also examined corr

Helping ourselves, helping others: the Young Women's Breast Cancer Study (YWS) - a multisite prospective cohort study to advance the understanding of breast cancer diagnosed in women aged 40 years and younger.

PURPOSE: Compared with older women diagnosed with breast cancer, younger women are more likely to die of breast cancer and more likely to suffer psychosocially in both the short-term and long term. The Young Women's Breast Cancer Study (YWS) is a multisite prospective cohort study established to address gaps in our knowledge about this vulnerable and understudied population. PARTICIPANTS: The YWS enrolled 1302 women newly diagnosed with stages 0-IV breast cancer at age 40 years or younger at 13 academic and community sites in North America between 2006 and 2016. Longitudinal patient-reported

CHRONIC MEDICAL CONDITIONS IN CROATIAN WAR VETERANS COMPARED TO THE GENERAL POPULATION: 25 YEARS AFTER THE WAR.

Many published reports have documented an increased prevalence of chronic medical conditions among veterans, but there were only a few studies that compared these increases with the general population. The aim of this study was to determine differences in chronic medical conditions between Croatian war veterans and the general population. This study included two groups of subjects, i.e. 1453 participants who are Croatian war veterans and 1429 participants from the general population. Medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests and specific diagnostic procedures were taken during sy

Cancer survivorship and psychological distress in later life.

Recent research in psychosocial oncology has pointed to the traumatic nature of the stress experienced by cancer survivors. Most of this research has focused on children, young adults survivors and their families. This investigation proposes a conceptual model for understanding general psychological distress (anxiety, hostility and depression) and symptoms of posttraumatic stress (hyper-arousal, avoidance and intrusiveness) that may be associated with cancer survivorship among older adults. Findings from a survey of 180 older adult, long-term cancer survivors are used to illustrate the key fea
