Sarcomatoid Carcinoma of the Penis: An Uncommon Penile Neoplasm.

Sarcomatoid squamous cell carcinomas are extremely rare, high grade, aggressive variant of penile cancers. Sarcomatoid carcinoma are biphasic neoplasms with a combination of both sarcomatoid components and carcinomatous elements. These neoplasms are very rare in the urogenital system. We report a 53-year-old male presented with an ulcerated lesion on the glans penis. The rarity of this case reiterates the importance of thorough morphological and histological examination along with immunohistochemistry in diagnosing, staging, treatment and follow up of patients.

Immunohistochemistry as a diagnostic aid in cervical pathology.

As with biopsies from other sites in the female genital tract, immunohistochemistry is now being increasingly used in cervical pathology as an aid to diagnosis. In this review, I discuss applications of immunohistochemistry in diagnostic cervical pathology with a particular focus on recent developments. It is emphasised that immunohistochemistry is to be used as an adjunct to routine morphological examination and that no marker is totally specific or sensitive for a given lesion. Although much of this review focuses on glandular lesions, the value of markers, such as MIB1 and p16, in the asses

Ichthyosis uteri associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the endometrium - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ichthyosis uteri is an extremely rare condition in which the entire or extensive parts of endometrial lining are replaced by stratified squamous epithelium. Malignant potential of this entity is unclear and its association with dysplastic changes and primary squamous cell carcinoma of the endometrium and endometrial adenocarcinoma has been reported. However, lack of data makes difficult to interpret the significance of neoplasms arising from this condition. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report a case of ichthyosis uteri associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the endometrium in a 62

Molecular piracy: the viral link to carcinogenesis.

The vast majority of the human experience with viral infections is associated with acute symptoms, such as malaise, fever, chills, rhinitis and diarrhea. With this acute or lytic phase, the immune system mounts a response and eliminates the viral agent while acquiring antibodies to that specific viral subtype. With latent or chronic infections, the viral agent becomes incorporated into the human genome. Viral agents capable of integration into the host's genetic material are particularly dangerous and may commandeer the host's ability to regulate normal cell growth and proliferation. The oncog

Squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis manifesting after percutaneous nephrolithotomy for long standing calculus.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis is a rare neoplasm and is usually associated with long standing stone disease. The disease is aggressive in nature and usually has a poor prognosis. We report a case of renal lithiasis who underwent successful percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for renal pelvic calculus, and eight months later presented with a large invasive squamous cell carcinoma in the same location.

Micro-invasive squamous cell carcinoma arising in a pre-existing intraventricular epidermoid cyst. Case report and literature review.

The authors report the case of a 67-year-old woman with primary micro-invasive squamous cell carcinoma located in the lateral ventricle and originating from an epidermoid cyst. Radiological and histological features of the neoplasm are described and the relevant literature is studied briefly. Two consecutive surgical specimens were studied by light microscopy. In the histological sections of the subtotally removed material of the first operation, the cyst wall was layered by epithelium-the same as expected in an epidermoid cyst- and showed foci with mild to moderate dysplastic changes. [Second primary cancer in hematological malignancy experience in VGH-Taipei].

Seven patients of hematological malignancy with second primary cancer had been found at Veteran General Hospital from 1983 to 1988. The second primary cancers either developed subsequently or concurrently with the hematological malignancies. Four patients were diagnosed to be non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and three of them developed squamous cell carcinoma of lung(2) and hepatocellular carcinoma (1) at 44, 20 and 45 months after the initial diagnosis of on-Hodgkin's lymphoma. All three had received chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. Another one was found to have liposarcoma in the retroperitoneum conc

Primary clear cell thyroid carcinoma with squamous features.

A clear cell neoplasm of the thyroid with indistinguishable light microscopic features and similar tinctorial reactions for lipid and glycogen to those of clear cell renal carcinoma is described. However, electron microscopic examination disclosed cytoplasmic tonofibrils and keratohyaline granules as well as suggestive transitions between the tumor cells and acinar epithelium. The former appear to represent helpful "markers" for the distinction of this type of thyroid cancer from parathyroid or metastatic renal clear cell tumors. There is some evidence that not all clear cell thyroid neoplasms

Fine-needle aspiration of secondary neoplasms involving the salivary glands. A report of 36 cases.

Metastases or secondary deposits account for 16% of the malignant neoplasms involving the major salivary glands. A correct diagnosis of a secondary neoplasm is important to avoid unnecessary radical surgery and to guide further therapy. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is an excellent noninvasive diagnostic tool for evaluating salivary gland lesions. We reviewed 36 secondary malignant salivary gland neoplasms evaluated by FNAB. Ancillary studies were performed in selected cases. Follow-up included clinical correlation and review of histologic material. For 4 adenocarcinomas, 4 squamous cel

Significance of immunohistochemical overexpression of cyclooxygenase-2 in overall and disease-free survival of oral squamous cell carcinoma patients.

OBJECTIVE: In Pakistan, oral cancer ranks as the most common malignancy in males and the second most common malignancy in females. Cyclooxygenase-2 has been explored as an agent of carcinogenesis in oral and other neoplasms. This study aimed to observe the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 in oral squamous cell carcinoma, and to correlate the expression with patients' clinical features and overall and disease-free survival. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry for cyclooxygenase-2 was performed on a total of 100 oral squamous cell carcinoma formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded blocks. Expression was corre

Primary carcinoma of the ureter--a 24-year-study from south India.

This study from India has envisaged a characterization of primary carcinomas of the ureter using a review of all available Indian literature over a period of 32 years. The character of the tumor in the Indian patients was clinically; pain, abdominal lump and haematuria with most neoplasms being single, situated in the ureteric pelvis and such neoplasms being squamous cell in type. The others were transitional cell carcinomas. Similar ureteric neoplasms reported from Western literature showed that the reporting authors gave the predominant complaint as haematuria alone, the neoplasm being usual

Acantholytic Nodular Basal Cell Carcinoma.

Acantholysis is a microscopic finding describing the breakdown of desmosomes of keratinocytes and the formation of intraepithelial clefts after the loss of cohesion of keratinocytes. It can be observed in keratinocytic neoplasms, typically actinic keratoses and squamous cell carcinomas, and defines the acantholytic variants of these entities. Acantholysis has so far been reported in only 4 cases of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), mainly of the superficial type. A case of an otherwise typical nodular BCC showing features of acantholysis is presented here. Because BCCs are keratinocytic neoplasms,

Revisiting cercariform cells: Small cell carcinoma masquerading as cercariform cells.

Cercariform cells are slender cells with a bulbous end and a unipolar long cytoplasmic process, resembling Schistosoma cercariae. Since their first description in urothelial carcinoma, multiple studies have attempted to explore their utility in distinguishing metastatic urothelial carcinoma from other common malignant neoplasms, such as adenocarcinoma and squamous-cell carcinoma. Although not pathognomonic, they are most commonly encountered in urothelial carcinoma, but they can also be seen in other neoplasms, raising the possibility that this cytomorphological feature can be exploited to aid

Gingival Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Diagnostic Challenges and Clinical Implications.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the highly invasive malignancies globally, accounting for the vast majority of all oral cancers, that is, more than 90%. Carcinomas of the gingiva represent a distinct subgroup of OSCC, constituting approximately 12% of all OSCC cases. These neoplasms might mimic the inflammatory and reactive state of the periodontium, often leading to a delay in diagnosis and hence, poorer prognosis. A case of gingival squamous cell carcinoma in a 48-year-old female patient has been reported here, in which the patient had no risk factors for the development of thi

Metastatic HPV-related head and neck squamous cell carcinoma to the lung and mediastinal lymph nodes in aspirated cytology material: A diagnostic pitfall.

BACKGROUND: Although HPV-related head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) has good prognosis, a small proportion of patients develop distant metastases and have worse outcomes. Such metastases can be particularly difficult to diagnose in the lung and mediastinum, where they show extensive morphologic overlap with primary pulmonary neoplasms. This case series discusses metastatic HPV-related HNSCC in lung and mediastinal fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology. METHODS: The cytopathology archives were searched for lung and mediastinal FNA specimens of patients with HNSCC. Specimens were inc
