Cervical and reticular projections of neurones located in S1 and S2 segments of the cat's spinal cord.

Sacral neurones (S1 and S2 segments) projecting to the cervical cord (C6 segment) and to the contralateral gigantocellular reticular nucleus (coGRN) were electrophysiogically studied on 7 adult cats under alpha-chloralose anaesthesia. Antidromic action potentials were recorded from 48 neurones following stimulation of their axons in both the C6 segment and coGRN. Two groups of investigated cells were distinguished in the gray matter of sacral segments: one distributed in laminae V-VI (12 neurones), the other located in medial part of lamina VII and lamina VIII (36 neurones). All cells from the

Post-tetanic potentiation, habituation and facilitation of synaptic potentials in reticulospinal neurones of lamprey.

1. Synaptic potentials evoked by electrical stimulation of cranial nerves were recorded in giant reticulospinal neurones (Müller cells) of lamprey. A variety of patterns of stimulation was employed to explore further the functional properties of the pathways intervening between the cranial nerve fibres and Müller cells.2. Simultaneous low intensity stimulation of two different cranial nerves produced excitatory short-latency synaptic potentials whose amplitudes summed linearly.3. Tetanic (10/sec) stimulation of a cranial nerve depressed the evoked short-latency synaptic response, but following

Central motor conduction in human chronic Chagas' disease.

The possible involvement of spinal alpha motor neurons, dorsal root ganglia and sensory fibers in human chronic Chagas' disease was previously demonstrated. More recently neuropsychological and sensory evoked potentials studies suggest the existence of central nervous system abnormalities in these patients. We assessed the state of central motor pathways in 46 patients with chronic Chagas' disease and 30 healthy volunteers by means of percutaneous cortical and spinal electrical stimulation. No significative slowness in pyramidal tracts (PT) conduction was found when comparing both groups. Neit

Abnormalities of bladder innervation in diabetes mellitus.

Electrophysiologic evaluation of the neural pathways involved in bladder and urethral function is described in 30 patients with diabetes mellitus. The study showed decreased conduction velocities in patients with the detrusor reflex as well as in detrusor areflexia. The findings indicated that diabetic vesical dysfunction is principally the result of segmental demyelination in the peripheral nerve supply to the detrusor muscle and urethra.

Conductive component after cochlear implantation in patients with residual hearing conservation.

PURPOSE: Changes in auditory thresholds following cochlear implantation are generally assumed to be due to damage to neural elements. Theoretical studies have suggested that placement of a cochlear implant can cause a conductive hearing loss. Identification of a conductive component following cochlear implantation could guide improvements in surgical techniques or device designs. The purpose of this study is to characterize new-onset conductive hearing losses after cochlear implantation. METHOD: In a prospective study, air- and bone-conduction audiometric testing were completed on cochlear im

Amplitude of sensory nerve action potential in early stage diabetic peripheral neuropathy: an analysis of 500 cases.

Early diagnosis of diabetic peripheral neuropathy is important for the successful treatment of diabetes mellitus. In the present study, we recruited 500 diabetic patients from the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University in China from June 2008 to September 2013: 221 cases showed symptoms of peripheral neuropathy (symptomatic group) and 279 cases had no symptoms of peripheral impairment (asymptomatic group). One hundred healthy control subjects were also recruited. Nerve conduction studies revealed that distal motor latency was longer, sensory nerve conduction velocity was slow

Electroacupuncture Involved in Motor Cortex and Hypoglossal Neural Control to Improve Voluntary Swallowing of Poststroke Dysphagia Mice.

The descending motor nerve conduction of voluntary swallowing is mainly launched by primary motor cortex (M1). M1 can activate and regulate peripheral nerves (hypoglossal) to control the swallowing. Acupuncture at "Lianquan" acupoint (CV23) has a positive effect against poststroke dysphagia (PSD). In previous work, we have demonstrated that electroacupuncture (EA) could regulate swallowing-related motor neurons and promote swallowing activity in the essential part of central pattern generator (CPG), containing nucleus ambiguus (NA), nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), and ventrolateral medull

Fiber Track Length Gradients in the Avian Sound Localization Circuit Require Conduction Velocity Gradients to Maintain Isochronicity.

The chicken brainstem sound localization neural network exhibits a case where fiber length varies continuously across the fiber arrays connecting n. magnocellularis and n. laminaris. Detailed morphometric measurements were taken to quantify these length gradients. For both ipsilateral and contralateral projections, the path lengths connecting the caudal low-frequency segments are longer than those at the rostral high-frequency end, with a linear path length gradient between them. The length and the length gradient of the contralateral projection increase from hatchling to 2-4 weeks. Synchronou

Loss of optic nerve oligodendrocytes during maturation alters retinal organization.

The myelin sheath facilitates signal conduction along axons in white matter tracts, and when disrupted, can result in significant functional deficits. Demyelination, observed in diseases like multiple sclerosis and optic neuritis, are associated with neural degeneration, however the extent of this damage on upstream circuitry is not well understood. Here we use the MBP-iCP9 mouse model to induce selective oligodendrocyte ablation in the optic nerve at P14 via a chemical inducer of dimerization (CID), resulting in partial demyelination of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axons with minimal inflammat

Sensory axons excitability changes in carpal tunnel syndrome after neural mobilization.

Increased mechanosensitivity of the median nerve in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) has been demonstrated during upper limb tension test 1 (ULTT1) when the nerve is passively elongated. However, the neurophysiological changes of the sensory axons during stressing activities are unknown. The aim of present study was to verify possible changes in the excitability of median nerve afferent axons following nerve stress in elongation, in subjects with and without CTS. Eight CTS hands and eight controls were selected. Recruitment properties of the median nerve were studied by analyzing the relationship

Application of"Spinal cord fusion" in spinal cord injury repair and its neurological mechanism.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severely disabling and catastrophic condition that poses significant global clinical challenges. The difficulty of SCI repair results from the distinctive pathophysiological mechanisms, which are characterised by limited regenerative capacity and inadequate neuroplasticity of the spinal cord. Additionally, the formation of cystic cavities and astrocytic scars after SCI further obstructs both the ascending and descending neural conduction pathways. Consequently, the urgent challenge in post-SCI recovery lies in repairing the damaged spinal cord to reconstruct a fun

Motor learning requires myelination to reduce asynchrony and spontaneity in neural activity.

Myelination increases the conduction velocity in long-range axons and is prerequisite for many brain functions. Impaired myelin regulation or impairment of myelin itself is frequently associated with deficits in learning and cognition in neurological and psychiatric disorders. However, it has not been revealed what perturbation of neural activity induced by myelin impairment causes learning deficits. Here, we measured neural activity in the motor cortex during motor learning in transgenic mice with a subtle impairment of their myelin. This deficit in myelin impaired motor learning, and was acc

Diagnostic and Screening Laboratory Tests in the Assessment of Patients With Small Fiber Neuropathy: An Evidence-Based Review-Report of the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine Small Fiber Neuropathy Task Force.

Small fiber neuropathy (SFN) presents with neuropathic pain, dysesthesia, and autonomic symptoms in the context of normal nerve conduction studies, necessitating specialized diagnostic approaches. This evidence-based review by the AANEM SFN Task Force evaluates the diagnostic utility of ancillary tests and appropriate screening laboratory investigations in the assessment of SFN. A comprehensive literature review was conducted using OVID MEDLINE and EMBASE from 1966 to January 2023. Studies were selected based on prespecified inclusion criteria requiring clinical symptoms consistent with SFN an

Sural Sparing Pattern and Sensory Ratio as Electrodiagnostic and Prognostic Markers in Pediatric Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the presence of sural sparing pattern (SSP) and sensory ratio in pediatric Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), their distribution to subtypes, and their relationship with demographic and clinical features with a focus on the disability and muscle strength. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study was conducted on pediatric GBS patients of both sexes with 2 years follow-up and two nerve conduction studies in which SSP and sensory ratio were calculated. Three subgroups of SSP were formed by separate calculation of median (SSP-m) and ulnar (SSP-u) and both medi

Axonal conduction velocity and input conductance in petrosal ganglion primary sensory neurones of the cat.

Petrosal ganglion chemoreceptor neurones were impaled with glass microelectrodes in an 'in vitro' preparation maintained at 36.5 degrees C. For each cell, the input conductance and the axonal conduction velocity were calculated from the voltage change produced by a hyperpolarizing pulse, and from the latency of the spike evoked by carotid nerve stimulation. In 34 neurones, the average values for these variables were 3.7 X 10(-8) Siemens and 10 m/s. The two parameters were related by a power function with an exponent of 0.9, which is lower than the value of 2 expected on the basis of simple lin

Analysis of conduction velocity in the H pathway. Part 1. Methodology and results in normal subjects.

An electrophysiological method is described for evaluating the conduction velocity in the different partial segments of the monosynaptic reflex pathway of the lower limbs in man. Using the latencies of M and H responses recorded from the soleus muscle elicited by stimulating the posterior tibial nerve at the popliteal fossa (pf) and the sciatic nerve at the upper thigh, the conduction velocities in the entire course (pf-to-spinal cord), in the proximal segment (upper thigh-to-spinal cord), and in the distal segment (pf-to-upper thigh) of the H circuit, were evaluated and expressed by mixed (se

Not only cross-sectional area: Echogenicity matters in nerve ultrasound studies of patients with motor multifocal neuropathy.

Nerve ultrasound (n-US) supports the diagnosis of multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN), though most studies focus on nerve enlargement (NE) and its distribution. This study explored nerve echotexture using ultrahigh-frequency ultrasound (UH-FUS) in 13 MMN patients (mean age 61.9 years, disease duration 147 ± 105 months). NE was detected in 77%, preferentially involving median nerve, yet conduction blocks corresponded to NE in only 15%. Notably, 92% showed mixed/hyperechoic echotexture, including three patients with normal CSA, suggesting microstructural remodeling beyond swelling. No hypoechoic n

Changes in electrophysiological findings suggestive of demyelination following Guillain-Barré syndrome: A retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) is the most common form of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in Western countries. However, electrophysiological descriptions of changes in abnormalities suggestive of demyelination after an AIDP episode are rare. We aimed to describe the clinical and electrophysiological features of AIDP patients after the acute episode, to investigate changes in abnormalities suggestive of demyelination and to compare with electrophysiological features of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP). Nodoventricular accessory atrioventricular connection associated with dual atrioventricular pathways: a case report and review of the literature.

A case is presented of a patient free from tachyarrhythmias or prior evidence of pre-excitation syndrome, in whom electrophysiologic study revealed evidence of dual AV nodal pathways associated with a nodoventricular bypass tract. Programmed atrial extrastimuli testing revealed that conduction through the fast AV nodal pathway was associated with a normal HV interval and normal QRS morphology. Conduction through the slow AV nodal pathway was always associated with a short HV interval and ventricular pre-excitation. No tachyarrhythmias could be induced with atrial extrastimuli or rapid atrial p
