The authors reported familial brain tumors in which meningioma and acoustic neurinoma occurred in two siblings of each two families with no evidence of the neurocutaneous syndromes, nor the familial cancer syndromes. Case A-1 is a 49-year-old female admitted to the hospital because of bilateral visual disturbance in July of 1976. A suprasellar mass was observed by CT scan. Right frontal craniotomy and removal of the tumor were done in July of 1976. Histological diagnosis was meningothelimatous meningioma. Case A-2 is a 47-year-old female, a younger sister of case A-1. Tinnitus, hearing disturb

STUDY DESIGN: A case report of spinal neurocutaneous melanosis without cutaneous nevi.
OBJECTIVE: To show a case and review the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of neurocutaneous melanosis without cutaneous nevi.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Neurocutaneous melanosis is a rare congenital syndrome consisting of benign or malignant melanocytic tumors of the central nervous system and cutaneous nevi. Symptomatic neurocutaneous melanosis has extremely poor prognosis, even in the absence of malignancy. Because leptomeningeal lesions of the neurocutaneous melanosis usually undergo malignant tra

Garcia-Hafner-Happle syndrome, also known as Fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 epidermal nevus syndrome, is a new neurocutaneous phenotype, which has been identified in 2008 by Garcı'a-Vargas et al. The disorder is caused by a mosaic R248C mutation of the FGFR3 gene, which is characterized by a keratinocytic epidermal nevus, acanthosis nigricans, and neurological abnormalities like seizures, intellectual impairment, cortical atrophy, and underdevelopment of corpus callosum. The epidermal nevus syndromes represent a group of distinct disorders in which an epidermal nevus is associated with ab

The phacomatoses are disorders characterized by multiple hamartomas of the central and peripheral nervous system, eye, skin, and viscera. Many of these diseases have well-defined Mendelian patterns of inheritance because of a mutation of a single gene. In other instances, no clear patterns of inheritance or genetic susceptibility have been identified. In some cases, patients are at increased risk of malignancy. The combination of ocular and CNS manifestations seen in patients with the phacomatoses makes neuro-ophthalmologic evaluation particularly important in the diagnosis and management of t

PHACE(S) syndrome is a neurocutaneous disorder of unknown etiology. The acronym refers to the commonest features of PHACE: posterior fossa malformations, large facial hemangiomas, cerebral arterial anomalies, cardiovascular anomalies, and eye anomalies. When ventral developmental defects such as sternal clefting or supraumbilical raphe occur, the PHACES acronym may be used. The hallmark feature of PHACE is the presence of one or more large facial infantile hemangiomas that occupy at least one facial segment. Infantile hemangiomas differ from the capillary malformation (port wine stain) of Stur

BACKGROUND: Sturge-Weber syndrome is a congenital neurocutaneous disorder characterized by facial port-wine stain, leptomeningeal angioma, and neurological disorders. Sturge-Weber syndrome can coexist with other disorders in a few patients; however, muscular abnormalities have not been reported in patients with Sturge-Weber syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: A Chinese girl presented with extensive port-wine stains, congenital bilateral glaucoma, and leptomeningeal angiomatosis. The neurocutaneous symptoms were consistent with the diagnostic criteria of Sturge-Weber syndrome. Meanwhile, episodes of

A case of linear sebaceous nevus syndrome (sebaceous nevus of Jadassohn) in an infant is reported. The clinical manifestation and the radiological features of the central nervous system abnormalities associated with this neurocutaneous syndrome are presented. We believe that this is the first reported case of this syndrome in combination with optic glioma.

White matter changes are seen in a spectrum of disorders in children and adolescents. Understanding their distribution and appearance helps to reach diagnoses in daily radiologic practice. This pictorial essay will outline the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearances of diseases with white matter changes including demyelinating diseases, dysmyelinating disorders/leukodystrophies, infections, autoimmune diseases, vascular causes, mitochondrial disorders and neurocutaneous syndromes, along with a brief overview of clinical aspects of the diseases such as typical age of presentation, etiology

PHACE syndrome is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome that describes the association of large segmental infantile haemangioma involving the head and neck, along with other systemic anomalies. Complex congenital heart disease has rarely been reported in this syndrome. We present a report of a patient with PHACE syndrome and truncus arteriosus.

Peripheral demyelinating neuropathy, central dysmyelinating leukodystrophy, Waardenburg syndrome and Hirschsprung disease (PCWH) is a rare manifestation of Waardenburg-Shah syndrome associated with mutations in the SOX10 gene. The phenotypic expression is variable, thus presenting a diagnostic challenge. Clinical manifestations of PCWH may mimic other neurocutaneous syndromes. A thorough history, careful physical examination, appropriate imaging studies and an index of suspicion are needed to diagnose this condition. We describe an adolescent girl with skin hypopigmentation and blue irides ass

Several neurocutaneous syndromes have been reported in association with tuberous sclerosis complex. The coexistence of intracranial features of Sturge-Weber syndrome in patients with a confirmed diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis complex has been recently described. Several hypotheses can be raised to explain this association. The coexistence of signs of both diseases in the same patient could be explained by abnormal neural crest development, and by mutually enhanced common altered pathways. Mutation characterization of tuberous sclerosis complex and a better definition of the clinical and neuro

A review of neuroimaging findings in diverse pathologies involving the temporal lobe in children is undertaken. Illustrative images of the developmental disorders that may cause temporal epilepsy in the pediatric context are provided. Brain malformations associated with hippocampal dysgenesis and related conditions such as epilepsy-associated tumors will be discussed with representative examples. Neurocutaneous syndromes that can involve the temporal lobe producing epilepsy or learning defects will be also discussed. Some other miscellaneous disorders occurring preferentially in the pediatric

A 6-year-old boy with skin lesions suggestive of neurofibromatosis developed a frontotemporal primitive neuroectodermal tumor and was subsequently treated with surgery, craniospinal irradiation, and chemotherapy. After the sixth cycle of treatment with vincristine sulfate, 9 months after diagnosis, the child developed a rapidly progressive bilateral deterioration in visual acuity. Retinal appearances were consistent with optic neuropathy. Gene studies for neurocutaneous syndromes were negative. Brain imaging at this time showed no tumor progression, and in the absence of other etiologies, we i

Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis is a rare neurocutaneous dysgenetic syndrome, which is characterized by unilateral lipomas in the subcutis of the face, skalp and skull, porencephalic cyst of the ipsilateral hemisphere, epilepsy, and severely delayed development. Furthermore a variety of skin lesions (choristomas) has been described. In the present case the skin lesions had the form of a linear nevus sebaceus. This condition is frequently combined with epilepsy and neurological disorders (Schimmelpenning-Feuerstein-Mims-syndrome). The latter seems not to be a very rare syndrome. The coinci

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SSW) is a congenital neurocutaneous disorder, which presents a port wine vascular malformation that covers the territory of the trigeminal nerve, neurological manifestations (ipsilateral leptomeningeal involvement, seizures and mental retardation) and ophthalmic signs (choroidal vascular malformation, glaucoma). There is no evidence to indicate that this is an inherited disease. Our patient had a small vascular malformation in the frontal and right upper eyelid, significant neurological involvement, and no ocular involvement. In SSW, not always the magnitude of the skin

Skin lesions can often be the only sign of an underlying systemic abnormality which will require further investigation. Several syndromic conditions are diagnosed after their cutaneous marker, which is in most cases a nevus. We report a neurocutaneous condition which we named "syndromic nevoid hypermelanosis" (SNH). We studied seven patients who presented with hyperpigmented disseminated macules (melanotic or pigmented nevi) as a cardinal sign. Neurological abnormalities were detected in all cases and skeletal dysmorphism in four. In spite of the genetic alteration that may be the cause of thi

The aim of this study was to describe a possible variant of encephalo-craniocutaneous lipomatosis syndrome. Three cases of congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face, associated with cutaneous, subcutaneous, and cerebral abnormalities, are presented. This neurocutaneous syndrome appears very similar to encephalo-craniocutaneous lipomatosis syndrome but lacks the typical eye lesions.
