Extraskeletal Ewing's Sarcoma/Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor of the Breast in a Young Woman.

Extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumors (EES/PNET) of the breast are rare malignant soft-tissue tumors associated with a high recurrence rate. We present the case of a 17-year-old female who presented with a lump in the left breast. Ultrasonography and mammography revealed a large, ill-defined, hypoechoic, heterogeneous, dense lobulated lesion without calcifications. Fine needle aspiration cytology showed atypical cells. Computed tomography of the brain, chest, and abdomen ruled out extra-mammary origin and metastasis. Wide local excision of the lesion followed by histop

Gastrointestinal Neuroectodermal Tumor/Extraskeletal Ewing Sarcoma of the Ileum with Ulcerative Colitis.

INTRODUCTION: Malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumor (GNET), previously known as clear cell sarcoma-like tumor of the gastrointestinal tract, is an extremely rare and aggressive mesenchymal neoplasm characterized by high rates of recurrence, metastases, and mortality. Currently, there are no standardized guidelines for therapy. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of GNET in a 32-year-old male with a history of lymphoma and ulcerative colitis (UC), who also had synchronous multiple liver metastasis. To our knowledge, this is the first documented case of GNET in a patient with inflam

Neuroectodermal influence in odontogenic cyst and tumor: Evidence through CD56 immunoexpression.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: CD56, associated with neuroectodermal differentiation of the embryonal cells, is often considered a marker of neural lineage. Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are of particular interest because of their characteristic histopathologic features, high recurrence rate, and aggressive behavior. CD56 immunoreactivity in these lesions has been reported with very high frequency. The present study analyzes the immunoexpression of CD56 in ameloblastoma (AM) and OKC to infer neuroectodermal influence in the pathogenesis of odontogenic lesions and its correlation with clinicopatho

Primary diffuse leptomeningeal primitive neuroectodermal tumor presenting as chronic meningitis.

Primary diffuse leptomeningeal primitive neuroectodermal tumor is a rare meningeal neoplasm which can masquerade as chronic meningitis. While the clinical presentation and radiological features may provide a clue to this condition, meningeal biopsy is essential to clinch the diagnosis. A high index of suspicion and a low threshold for re-evaluating cases of neuroinfection that do not respond to empirical therapy are essential in this scenario. We present the case of a nine year old boy who was initiated on antituberculous treatment for chronic meningitis with hydrocephalus. Meningeal biopsy re

Transformed Testicular Teratoma to Embryonic-Type Neuroectodermal Tumor With Metastasis to Mediastinum.

Testicular teratomas may present in both prepubertal and adult men; however, the prognosis differs greatly between these 2 populations. In children, teratomas (prepubertal type) most often occur before the age of 4, are generally seen in their pure form, and behave in a benign fashion. In adults (postpubertal type), teratomas are usually part of a mixed germ cell tumor, and they have the potential to be found at metastatic sites, especially following chemotherapy for non-teratomatous germ cell tumor. Analyses of metastases from germ cell tumors and teratomas from the same patient have demonstr

Primary peripheral neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the adrenal gland: a rare entity.

PURPOSE: Ewing Sarcoma/Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor (ES/PNET) is a malignant small round cell tumor belonging to the Ewing Sarcoma Family of Tumors. It occurs more commonly in children and young adults. Its localization in the adrenal gland is extremely rare. We reviewed 35 cases of ES/PNET of the adrenal gland reported in the literature and presented our case. METHODS: Data were collected by searching for ES/PNET and adrenal gland key words on Google Scholar and PubMed in March 2018, including a case diagnosed in our department. We analyzed all reviewed cases for diagnosis, surgical and s

Ewing Sarcoma/Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor in the Adrenal Gland of a Child.

Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) typically occurs in long or flat bones, soft tissues, or less often, solid organs. Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor arising from the adrenal gland is extremely rare, especially in children, and only limited cases are reported previously. Herein, we review a case of a 22-month-old girl who presented to our department with abdominal pain, bulging of the left flank, and a nonfunctioning adrenal lesion which was found to be an adrenal ES/PNET. The patient was successfully treated with surgery and adjuvant ch

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor arising from an untreated congenital undescended testicle.

A 26-year-old male with a personal history of schizophrenia initially presented with a 13 cm pelvic mass corresponding to a cryptorchidic testis. The patient was treated with primary and second-line chemotherapy for metastatic germ-cell tumor followed by surgical consolidation. Final pathology revealed a primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) mixed with mature teratoma. Despite multidisciplinary management, significant patient non-compliance led to inadequate follow up and treatment delays ultimately resulting in death. To our knowledge, this is the only reported case of teratoma with malignan

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the spine: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors are extremely rare tumors in the spine; only 18 cases of extra-dural peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor cervical region have been reported. The aim of this report is to highlight the challenges in diagnosis and management of this condition. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of 5-year-old Moroccan boy, who presented with torticollis for 1 month. Computed tomography scan and Magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine revealed an extradural, dumbbell-shaped mass with extra-spinal extension at the left C1-C6 level. Multiple

BRAFV600E Mutation in Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy: Toward Personalized Medicine?

The melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare neoplasm that primarily affects the maxilla of infants during their first year of life. Complete resection is the conventional treatment and recurrence rates vary from 10% to 60%. The recurrent tumors grow more aggressively and can invade other anatomic structures, such as the nasal cavity, the orbit, and the skull base. The aggressive behavior of MNTIs may require radical resection, which may not be possible in some cases because of its rapid and invading growth together with invasion of vital structures. In these situations, adj

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor in a two-year-old paint horse.

A 2-year-old gelding presented with a history of lethargy and anorexia. Physical examination revealed pleural and abdominal fluid, as well as several masses in the scrotum. The horse became acutely dyspneic despite 7 days of supportive care. Because of the poor prognosis, the owners elected euthanasia. Gross necropsy findings included multiple masses in the scrotum and inguinal canals and along the dorsal peritoneal cavity. The neoplasm infiltrated the kidneys, liver, spleen, mesenteric lymph nodes, mesentery, and abdominal surface of the diaphragm. Histologically, the neoplasm is composed of

Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor metastasis to the abdomen via a ventriculoperitoneal shunt.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) include a heterogeneous group that originate from primitive neuroepithelial cells. PNETs are prone to cerebrospinal fluid seeding and central nervous system spread. Infratentorial PNET, or medulloblastoma, is a common brain tumor in children and metastatic spread to the abdomen via a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt has been described. Supratentorial PNETs are much less common. We present a rare case of a predominantly supratentorial PNET metastasizing to the abdomen via a VP shunt and discuss the radiological findings. This case demonstrates the small b

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the epigenetic involvement of RASSF1A in intracranial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) and compare the methylation patterns between medulloblastoma (MBs) and supratentorial PNETs (SPNETs). METHODS: The methylation status at the promoter regions of RASSF1A was examined by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP) in a cohort of 25 primary MBs, 9 primary SPNETs, 3 MB and 2 SPNET cell lines. RASSF1A-deficient PNET cell lines were treated with 5-aza-2'deoxycytidine, a demethylating agent, to explore the relationship between hypermethylation and the gen

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy: systematic review of the literature and presentation of a case.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, distinctive neoplasm of early infancy with rapid expansile growth and a high rate of recurrences. Most commonly the lesion affects the maxilla of infants during the first year of life, but it may also occur in the mandible, skull, brain, epididymis, and other rare locations. The origin of the tumor is the neural crest. The expansive, destructive, and rapid growth of MNTI and its effects on the surrounding tissues are the most obvious clinical features. Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (stPNETs) are malignant tumors. We saw within three years six children with stPNETs. In four of the six children radical resection could be achieved. All had craniospinal irradiation and chemotherapy according to the HIT-91 protocol. The two children with incomplete resection died due to tumor progression after 7 and 10 months. Two of the 4 children with complete tumor resection had local relapses 8 months after diagnosis and died after 14 and 18 months. One child had a diffuse meningeal relapse 12 months after diagnosis.
