OBJECTIVE: Impaired response inhibition is the core cognitive deficit in methamphetamine use disorder (MUD), and methamphetamine cue reactivity is a major factor that reduces inhibition efficiency. The authors sought to use cognition-guided neurofeedback to deactivate methamphetamine cue-related brain reactivity patterns in men with MUD to improve their response inhibition.
METHODS: A cognition-guided, closed-loop EEG-based neurofeedback protocol was employed. Methamphetamine cue-related brain activity patterns were identified offline using multivariate pattern analysis of EEG data from all c

EEG neurofeedback (EEG-NFB) is a promising tool for the treatment of depressive disorders. However, many methods for the presentation of neurobiological reactions are available and it is widely unknown which of these feedback options are preferrable. Moreover, the influence of motivation on NFB training success is insufficiently studied. This study analyzed the efficacy of a novel EEG protocol (FC3/Pz) based on findings for NFB in depression. The role of four feedback options (Rumination, Anxiety, Meditation Master, Moving Art) from the NFB software "Brain Assistant" and motivation in EEG-base

Primary headaches are highly prevalent and represent a major cause of disability in young adults. Neurofeedback is increasingly used in the treatment of chronic pain; however, there are few studies investigating its efficacy in patients with headaches. We report the results of a cross-over sham-controlled study on the efficacy of neurofeedback in the prophylactic treatment of tension-type headache (TTH). Participants received ten sessions of infra-low frequency electroencephalographic neurofeedback and ten sessions of sham-neurofeedback, with the order of treatments being randomized. The study

Anxiety disorders are a leading cause of morbidity and entail a lot of costs. Adolescence is characterized by social fears and poor emotion regulation abilities which together increase the likelihood of the emergence of anxiety disorders. This emotion dysregulation is potentially caused by the emotion regulating brain areas, such as the prefrontal cortex and temporal cortex, that are still undergoing developmental changes throughout late adolescence. Recently, new approaches have used functional magnetic resonance imaging-based neurofeedback to help participants gain control over emotion regul

Attention biases towards threat signals have been linked to the etiology and symptomatology of social anxiety disorder (SAD). Dysfunction of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) may contribute to attention biases in anxious individuals. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) neurofeedback (NF) training-targeting the dlPFC-and its effects on threat-related attention biases of individuals with SAD. 12 individuals with SAD participated in the NIRS-NF training lasting 6-8 weeks and including a total of 15 sessions. NF performance increas

OBJECTIVE: One of the brain signatures of the central neuropathic pain (CNP) is the theta band over-activity of wider cortical structures, during imagination of movement. The objective of the study was to investigate whether this over-activity is reversible following the neurofeedback treatment of CNP.
METHODS: Five paraplegic patients with pain in their legs underwent from twenty to forty neurofeedback sessions that significantly reduced their pain. In order to assess their dynamic cortical activity they were asked to imagine movements of all limbs a week before the first and a week after th

The capacity for subjects to learn to volitionally control localized brain activity using neurofeedback is actively being investigated. We aimed to investigate the ability of healthy volunteers to quickly learn to use visual feedback during real-time functional MRI (rtfMRI) to modulate brain activity within their anterior right insular cortex (RIC) localized during a blink suppression task, an approach of possible interest in the use of rtfMRI to reduce urges. The RIC region of interest (RIC-ROI) was functionally localized using a blink suppression task, and blood-oxygen level dependent (BOLD)

BACKGROUND: Functional magnetic resonance imaging neurofeedback (fMRI NF) is gaining popularity as an experimental treatment for psychiatric and neurologic disorders. However, concerns that fMRI NF acts as a placebo rather than through operant conditioning principles, as known for electroencephalography NF, have largely been disregarded.
METHODS: To examine these concerns, 25 healthy individuals underwent training to downregulate activity in the amygdala and subgenual anterior cingulate cortex, and to upregulate both regions concurrently as a bidirectional control condition, across six sessio

Self-regulation of specific brain regions can be achieved using neurofeedback with real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rt-fMRI). We leveraged this technique to dissect the role of two tightly interconnected areas implicated in face perception, by interleaving a visual task with upregulation of either the occipital (OFA) or fusiform face-responsive areas (FFA) in a trial-wise manner. Experimental participants (N = 22) successfully enhanced their target region when compared to yoked controls (N = 20). Regulation was face-selective, as evidenced by concomitant increases in other node

Dyspnea in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is often treated as the perceptual consequence of altered airflow, lung volume, gas exchange, or work of breathing. Yet breathlessness is not a unitary symptom or a direct readout of pulmonary dysfunction. It comprises at least three partially dissociable sensations-air hunger, breathing effort, and chest tightness-with distinct physiological triggers and affective salience. Current models suggest that conscious breathlessness emerges from the interaction of respiratory motor drive, corollary discharge, sensory afferent feedback, central

(1) Background: Neurofeedback (NFB) and biofeedback (BFB) have been shown to reduce stress, enhance physiological self-regulation, improve cognitive performance, and accelerate response times. Stimulating the sensorimotor rhythm (12-15 Hz) is particularly effective in improving working memory and selective attention. However, most studies on air force pilots focus on addressing post-traumatic stress disorder rather than investigating how these interventions might enhance performance and safety during flights, as explored in the present study. (2) Methods: Twelve Spanish Air Force fighter pilot

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with an unclear pathogenesis to date. Neurofeedback (NFB) had shown therapeutic effects in patients with ASD. In this study,we analyzed the brain functional networks of children with ASD and investigated the impact of NFB targeting the beta rhythm training on these networks. The Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) and Social Response Scale (SRS) were employed to evaluate the effects of NFB training on the behavioral abilities of children with ASD. We compared the differences in static and dynamic brain functional networks between ASD

OBJECTIVES: Aberrant movement-related cortical activity has been linked to impaired motor function in Parkinson's disease (PD). Dopaminergic drug treatment can restore these, but dosages and long-term treatment are limited by adverse side-effects. Effective non-pharmacological treatments could help reduce reliance on drugs. This experiment reports the first study of home-based electroencephalographic (EEG) neurofeedback training as a non-pharmacological candidate treatment for PD. Our primary aim was to test the feasibility of our EEG neurofeedback intervention in a home setting.

BACKGROUND: The world faces a mental health crisis with elevated rates of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress, leaving a profound impact on daily quality of life (QOL). Current treatments show varying degrees of efficacy and carry burdensome challenges. Evidence exists for use of an innovative neurotechnology to reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but the science is lacking for use in the general population.
PURPOSES: The purpose of this pilot study was to explore the effects of microcurrent neurofeedback on depression, anxiety, PTSD s

Neurofeedback training (NFT) is a non-invasive method and has been shown to be effective for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and various psychiatric disorders. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of NFT for patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) or Vascular Diseases (VD), so that we searched research articles from four databases, using the keywords neurofeedback, elderly, MCI, AD, VD, and dementia. As a result, 13 articles were identified regarding the effectiveness of NFT in patients with MCI and AD. Although each study di

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is characterized by significant cognitive impairments and affects up to 98% of patients. Neurofeedback (NF) offers a means to modulate neural network function through cognitive processes such as learning and memorization, with documented structural changes in the brain, most notably an increase in grey matter volume in targeted regions.
METHODS: The present 2-week, open-label, preliminary study aims to evaluate the efficacy on cognition of an adjunctive short and intensive (8 daily sessions lasting 30 minutes) alpha/theta NF training in a sample of subjects affected

Sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) activity has been associated with automaticity and flow in motor execution. Studies have revealed that neurofeedback training (NFT) of the SMR can improve sports performance; however, few studies have adequately explored the effects of a single session of such NFT or examined the possible mechanisms underlying these effects on sports performance. This study recruited 44 professional golfers to address these gaps in the literature. A crossover design was employed to determine the order of the participation in the NFT and no-training control conditions. The participants

This article describes the protocol for a randomized, controlled clinical trial of a neurofeedback (NF) intervention for Tourette Syndrome (TS) and chronic tic disorder. The intervention involves using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to provide feedback regarding activity in the supplementary motor area: participants practice controlling this brain area while using the feedback as a training signal. The previous version of this NF protocol was tested in a small study (n = 21) training adolescents with TS that yielded clinically promising results. Therefore, we plan a larger trial.
