[Multiple orgasms in women].

Two hundred women treated for neurotic disorders and 100 female health professionals and counselors were investigated by means of a questionnaire to establish, whether they can have two or more consecutive orgasms. Multiple orgasms were reported to occur mostly or often in 14% of neurotics and in 39% of the health professionals. Our results in female neurotics are in agreement with the classical data of Kinsey et al. (1953) and with the recent data of Hubalek (1986), who investigated 121 women presenting for suspected sterility. Our results in health professionals and counselors are close to t

[Preventive and cessation therapy of mental disorders in patients with the acute coronary syndrome].

An open prospective trial of 93 inpatients divided into two main groups (61 patients) - with mental disorders (31) and without mental disorders (30) and a comparison group (32 patients) was carried out. All patients survived the acute coronary syndrome (myocardial infarction, unstable angina). The efficacy and safety of both preventive and cessation therapy with pantogam active in mean doses 1.8 and 1.2 g /daily, respectively, was demonstrated in respect of heterogeneous depressive, anxiety and somatoform disorders of the neurotic level.

Neurotic depression and DSM-III.

The background for the removing of the concept of neurosis from the American diagnosing system is discussed. Results are presented showing how cases diagnosed as neurotic depression according to ICD-9, are distributed on various DSM-III diagnoses. It appears that half of the sample is diagnosed as major depression, one-fifth as dysthymic disorder and one-fifth as depressive adjustment disorder. Concerning the delineation between different unipolar depressive diagnoses in DSM-III, results from a twin study are presented showing that many cotwins have a different depressive diagnosis than their

[Comorbidity of anxiety-depression and its treatment].

The comorbidity of anxiety/depression, or the co-occurrence of anxious and depressive symptoms is an heterogenous concept. There is comorbidity when a whole anxious syndrome and a whole depressive syndrome last during a period of life. The association of minor anxious and depressive disorders in a same patient during a certain period of time is the definition of mixed anxious and depressive disorder. The comorbidity of generalized anxiety disorder and dysthymia is more frequent than each of these two disorders separately considered. The interpretation of comorbidity needs cautiousness. The res

The Moderation Role of Neuroticism for Anxiety among Burdened Dementia Caregivers: A Study on Care Giver-Recipient Dyads.

Caregiving burden proves to be a risk factor of anxiety disorders and anxiety affection. The current study investigates how an endogenous personality dimension - neuroticism - moderates the association between caregiving burden and anxiety affection. Between 2015 and 2017, the study deployed a cross-sectional survey of 674 (response rate = 89%) older adults who were hospitalized for dementia at two hospitals. From all primary caregivers of these patients, 661 agreed to participate in the survey which yielded 661 matched dyads as the final sample. Caregiving burden, neuroticism, and anxiety aff

Prevalence of Psychiatric Morbidity and Alcohol use Disorders Among Adolescent Indigenous Tribals from Three Indian States.

BACKGROUND: Among the Indian adolescents, the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity and alcohol use disorders (AUD) are 7.3% and 1.3%. However, no separate data are available for indigenous tribal populations. This study estimated the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity and AUD and associated socio-demographic factors among adolescents in the tribal communities in three widely varying states in India. METHODS: Using validated Indian versions of the MINI 6.0, MINI Kid 6.0, and ICD-10 criteria, we conducted a cross-sectional survey from January to May 2019 in three Indian sites: Valsad, Gujarat (

Job satisfaction and job tenure of people with mental health disorders: a UK Biobank cohort study.

AIMS: Job satisfaction plays an important role for the life quality and health of working individuals. While studies have shown that self-reported mental health conditions such as stress, anxiety and depression are associated with job satisfaction, a large population-based study exploring and comparing self-reported physician posed diagnosed conditions and their association with job satisfaction and job tenure is missing. This study addresses the gap along with exploring the impact of the neurotic personality trait and other possible contributing factors. METHODS: Sixteen mental health disord

Impact of Dementia, Depression, and Other Mental Disorders on Reoperation and Mortality Among Hip Fracture Patients: A Nationwide Danish Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the rising global burden of mental disorders, their impact on complication risk following hip fracture surgery remains unclear. We examined reoperation and mortality risks after hip fracture surgery, investigating patients with and without moderate to severe mental disorders. METHODS: Using a nationwide cohort design, we identified patients undergoing hip fracture surgery from the Danish Multidisciplinary Hip Fracture Register. Mental disorders (including organic disorders (dementia), substance use, schizophrenia, mood disorders, and neurotic disorders) and reoperations we

[The most frequent depressive disorders. Diagnosis, classification, symptoms and prognosis].

The most frequent depressive disorders--anxiety and panic syndrome, dysthymic (neurotic) illnesses and reactive depressive adjustment disorders--were classified according to the new international codes. It was also explained that theoretical aetiological assessment principles had to be replaced by duration and symptomatology as operational criteria. Further, a table was elaborated for diagnosing depressive syndromes from an intrapsychic, social and somatic standpoint. Epidemiological aspects of both German and international studies were discussed and prognostic factors highlighted.

Psychologic implications of the maltreated-child syndrome.

A retrospective investigation of 97 psychologically maltreated children showed a clear relationship between clinical symptoms and the intensity of the abuse. Parental neglect resulted in impairment of intellectual and locomotor development and emotional and behavioral disorders. Neurotic manifestations of regressive type appeared in nearly half the preadolescents who suffered severe psychological abuse. Children under 6 years of age presented functional symptoms, including regression in toilet training and sleep disorders secondary to inadequate mothering.

Ventilatory response to CO2. II. Studies in neurotic psychiatric patients and practitioners of transcendental meditation.

The prominence of respiratory symptoms in patients with neurotic psychiatric disorders is noted and the literature on the control of respiration is reviewed to attempt to explain this finding. A previous study demonstrated a positive correlation between the ventilatory response to CO2 (S) and neurotic personality traits in a group of normal subjects. This study attempted to follow up this finding and hypothesized that a group of neurotically disturbed patients would have a higher S value and a group of individuals who practiced a calming technique such as transcendental meditation (TM) would h

[Dimensions of bizarre, idiosyncratic thinking. Relationship between thought disorders and affect].

In the present study disorders of thinking were studied in normals, patients with neurotic disorders, borderline patients and both acute and chronic schizophrenics. Disorders of thinking were assessed by the Holtzman Inkblot Technique. By a factor analysis, different dimensions of disordered thinking characteristic of the different diagnostic groups could be identified. Among others two dimensions of schizophrenic thought disorder and one of borderline thought disorder could be identified. This latter dimension showed high correlations with anxiety and hostility. This was true for a dimension

The prevalence of psychiatric morbidity among adults living in institutions.

This paper presents prevalence data from the 1994 OPCS survey of psychiatric morbidity among adults permanently resident in institutions catering for people with mental health problems in Great Britain. It describes briefly the survey methods used, and how diagnoses of psychiatric morbidity were derived. Its main aim is to show the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity in different types of institutional settings. Residents were eligible for the survey if they were aged 16 to 64 at the date of sampling and were permanently resident at the establishment. Residents were defined as permanently resi

Psychoanalytic Contributions to Psychodynamic Psychiatry and Psychotherapy: Freud's Structural Hypothesis.

Psychoanalysis has long lost its historical influence on U.S. academic psychiatry. Psychoanalytic theory, however, provides us with a rich and remarkably comprehensive knowledge of human development, both normative and pathologic. This article describes a psychoanalytic concept that enriches our understanding of the mind and its disorders: Freud's structural hypothesis. This core concept provides a theoretical foundation for understanding the clinical features of both neurotic and personality disorders. It also informs a psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Psychocutaneous syndromes: a call for revised nomenclature.

We propose abandoning three outdated, pejorative diagnostic terms: 'trichotillomania', 'delusions of parasitosis', and 'neurotic excoriation'. These insensitive terms are offensive to patients and become a barrier to treatment. We suggest the following alternative patient-centred nomenclature: 'neuromechanical alopecia', 'pseudoparasitic dysaesthesia', and (simply) 'excoriation'. We briefly review clinical and historical aspects of these disorders.

Psychiatric comorbidity in Danish patients with narcolepsy type 1, narcolepsy type 2, and idiopathic hypersomnia: a case-control study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To examine the difference in psychiatric comorbidity of Danish patients with Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1), Narcolepsy type 2 (NT2), and idiopathic hypersomnia (IH). METHODS: Polysomnography (PSG), Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), and lumbar puncture were performed on 505 patients referred to a sleep clinic for diagnostic evaluation of hypersomnia. Diagnosis, clinical characteristics, electrophysiologic data, and cerebrospinal fluid hypocretin-1 (Csf-Hcrt-1) results were retrieved. Subsequently, the patients were identified in the Danish national health registers to collect inf

Independence of mitral valve prolapse and neurosis.

An association has been claimed between mitral valve prolapse and the neuroses, especially the anxiety states, panic disorders, and agoraphobia. In this study 103 patients with echocardiographically confirmed mitral valve prolapse were tested with the Eysenck Personality Inventory for neuroticism and with the General Health Questionnaire for the presence of neurotic symptoms. The scores for neuroticism and neurotic symptoms were not significantly different from those of patients with other cardiac diseases or from those of patients presenting in primary care. In addition 50 patients with agora

Obsessive-compulsive disorder: prevalence, comorbidity, impact, and help-seeking in the British National Psychiatric Morbidity Survey of 2000.

OBJECTIVE: There is little information about obsessive-compulsive disorder in large representative community samples. The authors aimed to establish obsessive-compulsive disorder prevalence and its clinical typology among adults in private households in Great Britain and to obtain generalizable estimates of impairment and help-seeking. METHOD: Data from the British National Psychiatric Morbidity Survey of 2000, comprising 8,580 individuals, were analyzed using appropriate measurements. The study compared individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder, individuals with other neurotic disorders

The right of falling ill. On pathological health behavior.

There are people who never permit themselves to fall ill. This negative illness is called by the present author: counter-hypochondriasis. Several defense mechanisms in counter-hypochondriasis are described, especially in relation to infantile roots. Pathological health is considered as a neurotic symptom formation in which disorders in object relationship are all-important.
