Upstream petroleum degradation of mangroves and intertidal shores: the Niger Delta experience.

This article was inspired by a field reconnaissance survey of outcrops along the Nembe-Brass axis of the petroliferous Niger Delta. It reviews various tradeoffs of the impact of upstream petroleum (seismic and production) operations on the mangrove ecosystems in that region, the largest in Sub-Saharan Africa. Mangroves and intertidal shores are considered critical to the economic well-being of this region owing to the people's dual occupation in fishing and farming. The mangrove ecosystem provides a nutrient medium, which serves as a nursery and spawning ground for many fish species and other

Twinning rate in a rural mission tertiary hospital in the Niger delta, Nigeria.

Twin pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of pre-term deliveries, perinatal morbidity, mortality and maternal complications, especially in developing countries. A descriptive study of all women who had twin pregnancies in a rural mission tertiary hospital over a 7-year period was undertaken. There were a total of 3,351 deliveries and 99 cases of twin deliveries during the study period giving an incidence of 29.5/1,000 or one in 33.8 deliveries. Some 60% of the twins were delivered by caesarean section, while 36.4% had vaginal delivery. A total of 4% had vacuum delivery and a combinat

Ectopic pregnancy: an 11-year review in a tertiary centre in the Niger Delta.

Ectopic pregnancy still remains a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity in the first trimester of pregnancy and also a significant cause of reproductive failure in Nigeria. A descriptive review of 211 consecutive cases of ectopic gestation over an 11-year period was undertaken. Ectopic pregnancy constituted 9.5% of gynaecological admissions. In all, 86% were nulliparous and 62.6% were married. Abdominal pain and tenderness were the most consistent modes of presentation. Also, 95.3% presented as ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Induced abortion (72%) was the most common factor associated

The value of community participation in disease surveillance: a case study from Niger.

A team of researchers, including one behavioral scientist (S.M.N.) and three epidemiologists (L.Q., O.S. and S.N.) conducted community analyses to assess the social and cultural factors that affect the detection and reporting of disease cases in a surveillance system, using acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance in Niger as a case study. Over a 60-day period in the country, the research team reviewed written field reports and interviewed epidemiologists, nurses, community members and persons in governmental and non-governmental organizations. Overall, we found that the logistical difficult

[Endocrine diseases at the National Hospital of Niamey (Niger). Apropos of 195 cases].

The authors report 195 cases of endocrine diseases diagnosed in a department of internal medicine at the National Hospital of Niamey (Niger) from January 1982 to December 1986. Diseases of the thyroid gland were largely predominant (70.8%), with simple (34.9%) and nodular (19%) goiters. Hypothyroidism and thyroiditis were not frequent (2 and 2.6%, respectively). The rarity of thyroid cancers (1%) was in relation to the direct hospitalization of these patients in the surgical department. They were not included in this study. In spite of the magnitude of tuberculosis endemicity in Niger, primary

Clinical and immunological reactions to Aspergillus niger among workers at a biotechnology plant.

The workforce at a biotechnology plant producing citric acid by fermentation of molasses with a strain of Aspergillus niger was studied. A combination of a respiratory questionnaire and clinical assessment identified 18 subjects (4.9% of the workforce) with work related bronchospasm. In nine of these evidence of sensitisation to A niger was obtained by skin prick tests and radioallergosorbent test (RAST) using as an antigen an extract of the A niger culture fluid from the process. Of the 325 subjects without work related bronchospasm, only nine (2.7%) had a positive prick test. There were no s

[Urinary bilharziasis and sideropenic anemia. Study of their relation in 2 villages in Niger].

In order to assess Schistosoma haematobium as an aetiologic factor in sideropenic anaemias, we compared a village with high prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis and a village without urinary schistosomiasis as a control. In the infested village, anaemias (haemoglobin value lower than 12 g/dl) especially affects children between 5 to 14 years old (71%:45/68). Boys being the most infestated group with S. haematobium (prevalence:100%; mean egg output: 496 eggs/10 ml of urine) are also the most anaemic group (82%:23/28). Comparing the two villages shows that urinary schistosomiasis increases the

Food enzyme safety: an extensive lineage of safe Aspergillus niger production strains.

Aspergillus niger has been used for decades in the production of food enzymes and other fermented food ingredients. Ensuring the safety of microbially produced enzymes requires comprehensive safety assessments, supported by manufacturing best practices that consistently prevent the presence of fungal toxins at toxicologically relevant levels. This paper corroborates the safety of dsm-firmenich's Aspergillus niger production strain lineage, to support safety evaluations of enzymes produced by strains within this lineage. Toxicological data, including a full battery of genotoxicity tests and a 9

Thermal ecology and embryonic development in black caiman's (Melanosuchus niger, Spix 1758).

The black caiman (Melanosuchus niger, Spix, 1825) is a crocodilian species endemic to the Amazon biome, that nests within a defined nesting season bridging the local dry and wet seasons. Eggs are deposited in a mound of fresh and old vegetation, but little is known about the thermal relations of M. niger nests and their influence on embryo development rates and total incubation time. We present data for 7 wild nests from the southwestern Brazilian Amazon, gathered in 2019 and 2024. The mean incubation period from laying to hatching was 77.1 ± 8.3 days (SD; range 71.3-93.8 days). Nest temperatu

Surgical Complications of Typhoid Fever: First National Typhoid Conference in Niamey, Niger.

Typhoid intestinal perforation (TIP) is a life-threatening, late complication of typhoid fever that disproportionately impacts children in low resource settings and continues to have devastating consequences worldwide. Despite elimination of typhoid fever in most high income countries, typhoid fever and TIP remain endemic in many countries around the world as a result of inadequate investments in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and lack of access to vaccines. A first National Typhoid Conference was held in Niamey, Niger on July 22, 2023, where surgeons and other medical and health profes

First identification of Microsporidia MB in Anopheles coluzzii from Zinder City, Niger.

BACKGROUND: Malaria, a disease transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes, is a major public health problem causing millions of deaths worldwide, mostly among children under the age of 5 years. Biotechnological interventions targeting parasite-vector interactions have shown that the microsporidian symbiont Microsporidia MB has the potential to disrupt and block Plasmodium transmission. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional survey was conducted in Zinder City (Zinder), Niger, from August to September 2022, using the CDC light trap technique to collect adult mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles gamb

Enhanced removal of hydrocarbons BTX by light-driven Aspergillus niger ZnS nanobiohybrids.

Benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) are volatile aromatic compounds used in industries, however, they are hazardous when released into the environment. BTX degradation by Aspergillus niger cells combined with semiconducting zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanoparticles was explored in batch systems. Experiments were conducted individually for benzene, toluene, and xylene as well as in binary and trinary mixtures using A. niger cells-ZnS nanobiohybrids. The mechanism governing the removal of BTX by both A. niger cells and A. niger cells-ZnS nanobiohybrids were elucidated. Complete BTX degradation was achieve

Possible COVID-19-Associated Pulmonary Aspergillosis Due to Aspergillus niger in Greece.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes direct damage to the pulmonary epithelium, enabling Aspergillus invasion. Rapid progression and high mortality of invasive aspergillosis have been reported. In the present study, we report a rare case of possible COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) caused by A. niger in a Greek patient. Diagnosis was based on ECMM/ISHAM specific criteria and the new algorithm “BM-AspICU” for the invasive pulmonary aspergillosis diagnostic strategy. The fungal isolate was recovered in a non-bronchoalveolar lavage (non-BAL) sample

Community-level chlamydial serology for assessing trachoma elimination in trachoma-endemic Niger.

BACKGROUND: Program decision-making for trachoma elimination currently relies on conjunctival clinical signs. Antibody tests may provide additional information on the epidemiology of trachoma, particularly in regions where it is disappearing or elimination targets have been met. METHODS: A cluster-randomized trial of mass azithromycin distribution strategies for trachoma elimination was conducted over three years in a mesoendemic region of Niger. Dried blood spots were collected from a random sample of children aged 1-5 years in each of 24 study communities at 36 months after initiation of th
