Identification of novel members of the bacterial azoreductase family in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Azoreductases are a family of diverse enzymes found in many pathogenic bacteria as well as distant homologues being present in eukarya. In addition to having azoreductase activity, these enzymes are also suggested to have NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase (NQO) activity which leads to a proposed role in plant pathogenesis. Azoreductases have also been suggested to play a role in the mammalian pathogenesis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In view of the importance of P. aeruginosa as a pathogen, we therefore characterized recombinant enzymes following expression of a group of putative azoreductase genes

Repair of urethral defects by an adipose mesenchymal stem cell‑porous silk fibroin material.

The aim of the present study was to determine whether it was possible to repair urethral defects with a material of adipose mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs)‑porous silk fibroin (SF). A total of 39 male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into a control group, an SF group and a bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU)‑labeled ADMSCs‑SF group (SSF group; n=13/group). Defects were made by resecting the posterior urethral wall. The defects in the SF and SSF groups were repaired using SF and BrdU‑labeled ADMSCs‑SF materials respectively. Then the anterior wall was sutured, and the urethral catheter was

Assessment of nosocomial urinary tract infections in orthopaedic patients: a prospective and comparative study using two different catheters.

Catheter-related nosocomial urinary tract infection in postoperative orthopedic and trauma patients was studied prospectively using nitrofuroxone-impregnated urinary catheters (study group) and regular silicone-coated Foley catheters. Fifty adults in each group were randomly assigned. In Group A, antibiotic-impregnated catheters were used, and in the other, non-antibiotic-impregnated urinary catheters were used (Group B). The variables studied were age, sex, type of surgery, duration of surgery, number of catheter days, days of intravenous line, and hospital days. In patients, urinary tract in

[The clinico-microbiological evaluation of the efficacy of using new drug forms of chlorhexidine--Corsodyl and Eludril--for the prevention of infectious complications in operations for endosseous implantation].

Prevention of infectious inflammatory complications of intraosseous implantation is a pressing problem. Chlorohexidine dosage forms Corsodyl and Eludril were used for this purpose. In the control group, furacillin was used. Microbiological studies showed that instillations of Corsodyl and Eludril solutions during the postoperative period did not modify normal oral microflora and led to disappearance of the most aggressive anaerobic bacteria in 1-3 days. These drugs are more effective that Listerine, and they are recommended for prevention of infectious inflammatory complications after intraoss

A systematic review of the management of short-term indwelling urethral catheters to prevent urinary tract infections.

BACKGROUND: Indwelling urinary catheterisation is a relatively common procedure in hospital settings, associated with potential risk of infection. Around 80% of urinary tract infections (UTIs) are associated with urinary catheters and the risk of infection increases in patients who are acutely ill. The objective of this review was to present the best available critically appraised evidence related to preventing infections associated with the use of short-term indwelling urethral catheters. This review is an update of a previous review published in 2004. REVIEW METHODS: The review considered r

Medicated Foley Catheters Do Not Prevent Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Infections of the urinary tract are among some of the most common infections treated in clinical practice. Numerous risk factors play an intrinsic role in the development of such infections, namely: age, sexual intercourse, prolonged use of feminine hygiene products, instrumentation, pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, obstructive uropathy such as prostatic enlargement or urethral strictures, compromised immunity, and constipation. A major cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in hospitalized patients is catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). This systematic review a

Biliary antibiotics irrigation for E. coli-induced chronic proliferative cholangitis and hepatolithiasis: A pathophysiological study in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: The gram-negative bacteria secreted endotoxin, Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), plays important roles in the formation and recurrence of hepatolithiasis and chronic biliary inflammation in patients of Southeast Asia. We aimed to elucidate the anti-inflammatory effect and mechanism of local antibiotics irrigation on chronic proliferative cholangitis (CPC) and hepatolithiasis. METHODS: Escherichia coli was injected into rabbit bile ducts to induce CPC. Rabbits were divided into sham operation (SO), povidone-iodine, Metronidazole plus chlorhexidine, ofloxacin, furacillin, Neosporin® G.U., a

Hepatotoxicity in mice of a novel anti-parasite drug candidate hydroxymethylnitrofurazone: a comparison with Benznidazole.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of Chagas disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, relies on nifurtimox and benznidazole (BZL), which present side effects in adult patients, and natural resistance in some parasite strains. Hydroxymethylnitrofurazone (NFOH) is a new drug candidate with demonstrated trypanocidal activity; however, its safety is not known. METHODS: HepG2 cells dose response to NFOH and BZL (5-100 µM) was assessed by measurement of ROS, DNA damage and survival. Swiss mice were treated with NFOH or BZL for short-term (ST, 21 d) or long-term (LT, 60 d) periods. Sera levels of cellular injury ma
