This report assesses research on the interactions of UV radiation (280-400 nm) and global climate change with global biogeochemical cycles at the Earth's surface. The effects of UV-B (280-315 nm), which are dependent on the stratospheric ozone layer, on biogeochemical cycles are often linked to concurrent exposure to UV-A radiation (315-400 nm), which is influenced by global climate change. These interactions involving UV radiation (the combination of UV-B and UV-A) are central to the prediction and evaluation of future Earth environmental conditions. There is increasing evidence that elevated

Algal blooms frequently trigger CO2 limitation, under which diatoms not only survive but dominate. However, the cellular metabolic adaptations underlying this ecological phenomenon remain poorly understood. This study systematically investigated the coordinated carbon-nitrogen metabolic response of the typical diatom Skeletonema costatum (S. costatum) to CO2 limitation (300 ppm, 100 ppm) via stable isotope and multi-omics analysis. CO2 limitation triggered the carbon concentrating mechanism (CCM) and attenuated nitrogen isotope fractionation, redirecting carbon flux towards amino acid biosynth

Alkaline lakes are among the most bioproductive aquatic ecosystems on Earth. The factors that ultimately limit productivity in these systems can vary, but nitrogen (N) cycling in particular has been shown to be adversely affected by high salinity, evidently due to the inhibition of nitrifying bacteria (i.e., those that convert ammonic species to nitrogen oxides). The coastal plain of Coorong National Park in South Australia, which hosts several alkaline lakes along 130 km of coastline, provides an ideal natural laboratory for examining how fine-scale differences in the geochemistry of such env

Karst desertification causes severe soil erosion, hydrological imbalance, and biodiversity loss, thereby threatening ecosystem resilience and agricultural productivity. Soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) cycling underpin ecosystem stability, yet how agricultural management practices regulate multi-element cycling in degraded karst agroecosystems remains poorly understood. Here, we conducted a four-year field trial in a karst mango orchard in southwestern China and integrated metagenomic sequencing with comprehensive soil environmental profiling to investigate how C.

From the perspective of linking structural damage, oxidative stress and molecular regulation, this study clarified how antibiotic inhibited nitrogen metabolism in aerobic granular sludge (AGS). Long-term antibiotic stress severely damaged AGS structure, causing blurred boundaries, surface cracks and collapse zone. As a primary response, AGS continuedly increased extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion, which partially mitigated antibiotic toxicity through adsorption and shielding effects. However, persistent toxicity triggered 160.2% higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) level than t

The coordination of intracellular carbon and nitrogen levels is essential for optimal bacterial growth and, in rhizobia, for survival in the soil, root colonization, and symbiotic interactions with their host plants. Here, we show that the phosphotransferase system PTSNtr, a global regulator of carbon and nitrogen metabolism, modulates the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle activity and the accumulation of three major carbon storage polymers: glycogen, polyhydroxybutyrate, and exopolysaccharide in Rhizobium leguminosarum. The unphosphorylated form of the effector protein ManX is sufficient for the

Flexible supercapacitors (FSCs) are limited in flexible electronics applications due to their low energy density. Therefore, developing electrode materials with high energy density, high electrochemical activity, and remarkable flexibility is challenging. Herein, we designed nitrogen-doped porous MXene (N-MXene), using melamine-formaldehyde (MF) microspheres as a template and nitrogen source. We combined it with an electrospinning process to produce a highly flexible nitrogen-doped porous MXene nanofiber (N-MXene-F) as a self-supporting electrode material and assembled it into a symmetrical su

Saltwater intrusion (SWI) can result in the loss of dominant vegetation from freshwater habitats. In northern Australia, sea level is predicted to rise 17-50 cm by 2030-2070. This will exacerbate the impact of SWI, threatening Ramsar-listed habitats. Soil bacteria in these habitats play a significant role in biogeochemical cycling, regulating availability of essential nutrients such as nitrogen to vegetation. However, there is limited understanding as to how SWI will impact these soil bacteria. Floodplain soil samples were collected from the South Alligator River floodplain in Northern Austral

Research into the molecular machinery of eukaryotic unicellular organisms (protists) offers a unique opportunity to unveil the mechanisms of intricate cellular processes and complete life cycles at the level of a single cell operating as a whole organism. Knowledge of protistan molecular biology and life-cycle shifts as adaptations to varying physical-chemical features of the environment helps resolve important issues like evaluation of the balance between external abiotic triggers and internal molecular drivers of cell development. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of these processes is

Distillery sewage sludge (DSS), a typical organic byproduct generated during the production of Chinese Baijiu, has attracted increasing attention for its potential in agricultural resource utilization. However, the ecological effects of different DSS application methods on rhizosphere soil remain unclear. Using brewing sorghum rhizosphere soil as the research object, four application modes (unfertilized control, CK; spherical basal application, BF; spherical lateral application, LF; and powdered mixed application, MF) were comparatively evaluated for their impacts on soil nutrients, enzyme act

Atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NOx =NO+ NO2) play a pivotal role in the cycling of reactive nitrogen (ultimately deposited as nitrate) and the oxidative capacity of the atmosphere. Combined measurements of nitrogen and oxygen stable isotope ratios of nitrate collected in the Arctic atmosphere were used to infer the origin and fate of NOx and nitrate on a seasonal basis. In spring, photochemically driven emissions of reactive nitrogen from the snowpack into the atmosphere make local oxidation of NOx by bromine oxide the major contributor to the nitrate budget. The comprehensive isotopic compositi

Most often, urea cycle disorders have been described as acute onset hyperammonemia in the newborn period; however, there is a growing awareness that urea cycle disorders can present at almost any age, frequently in the critical care setting. This article presents three cases of adult-onset hyperammonemia caused by inherited defects in nitrogen processing in the urea cycle, and reviews the diagnosis, management, and pathophysiology of adult-onset urea cycle disorders. Individuals who have milder molecular urea cycle defects can lead a relatively normal life until a severe environmental stress t

The interaction between CO2 enrichment and nitrogen uptake under anthropogenic nitrogen inputs in the tropical coastal seas remains poorly understood. In this experimental study, we investigate the effects of elevated CO2 and impacts of various nitrogen sources such as river runoff, submarine groundwater discharge, industrial effluents, and atmospheric deposition, adding on NH4+ and NO3-uptake in tropical coastal waters. Using microcosm experiments along the west coast of India, a representative model system for tropical coastal ecosystems experiencing rapid anthropogenic development, we show

Soils in the riparian zone, the interface between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, may decrease anthropogenic nitrogen (N) loads to streams through microbial transformations (e.g., denitrification). However, the ecological functioning of riparian zones is often compromised due to degraded conditions (e.g., vegetation clearing). Here we compare the efficacy of an urban remnant and a cleared riparian zone for supporting a putative denitrifying microbial community using 16S rRNA sequencing and quantitative polymerase chain reaction of archaeal and bacterial nitrogen cycling genes. Although we

In living organisms, nitrogen arise primarily as ammonia (NH3) and ammonium (NH4(+)), which is a main component of the nucleic acid pool and proteins. Although nitrogen is essential for growth and maintenance in animals, but when the nitrogenous compounds exceeds the normal range which can quickly lead to toxicity and death. Urea cycle is the common pathway for the disposal of excess nitrogen through urea biosynthesis. Hyperammonemia is a consistent finding in many neurological disorders including congenital urea cycle disorders, reye's syndrome and acute liver failure leads to deleterious eff

Horizontal and profile distributions of nitrogen in marsh soils in different seasons were studied in a typical site within the Erbaifangzi wetland in Northeast China. Results showed that there was higher spatial heterogeneity for nitrate nitrogen (NO[Formula: see text]N) and ammonium nitrogen (NH[Formula: see text]-N), as well as available nitrogen (AN), in surface soils in July compared to that in September. Relative to July, the mean nitrogen contents in surface soils were slightly higher in September; however, in November, soils contained significantly lower NO[Formula: see text]N and NH[Fo

This review comprehensively summarizes the research progress in the electro-catalytic oxidation of nitrogen oxides (NO) and nitrogen gas (N2) to produce nitric acid/nitrate. In response to the global imbalance in the nitrogen cycle and the problem of NO pollution, the traditional high-energy consumption ammonia oxidation (Haber-Ostwald process) technology and end-of-pipe treatment techniques have limitations such as resource waste and secondary pollution. However, electro-catalytic technology can directly convert NO or N2 into high-value nitric acid/nitrate under mild conditions, achieving the

Elevated carbon dioxide (eCO2) levels can enhance crop yields but may simultaneously reduce quality, impacting both macronutrient and micronutrient concentrations, and potentially decreasing protein content in cereal grains. This study examined the effects of elevated CO2 (eCO2) and nitrogen (N) fertilization on crop growth, yield, and soil nitrogen cycling through a glass greenhouse experiment using Eutric Regosol soil. The experimental design incorporated two CO2 gradients: ambient CO2 (aCO2) at approximately 410 ppm during the day and 460 ppm at night, and eCO2 at approximately 550 ppm duri

Antibiotic resistance genes present a major public health challenge and have potential implications for global biogeochemical cycles. However, their impacts on biological nitrogen removal systems remain poorly understood. In the ammonia-oxidizing bacteria Nitrosomonas europaea ATCC 19718 harboring the multidrug-resistant plasmid RP4, a significant decrease in ammonia oxidation efficiency was observed, accompanied by markedly elevated levels of cyclic di-guanylate (c-di-GMP) and acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs), compared to plasmid-free controls. The results demonstrated that c-di-GMP facilitate

Thauera, as one of the core members of wastewater biological treatment systems, plays an important role in the process of nitrogen and phosphorus removal from low-carbon source sewage. However, there is a lack of systematic understanding of Thauera's metabolic pathway and genomics. Here we report on the newly isolated Thauera sp. RT1901, which is capable of denitrification using variety carbon sources including aromatic compounds. By comparing the denitrification processes under the conditions of insufficient, adequate and surplus carbon sources, it was found that strain RT1901 could simultane
