Examination of the role of implicit clinical judgments during the mental health intake.

We examined the characteristics of therapists' implicit clinical judgments during the mental health intake. Following the intake sessions with new clients, we conducted 129 semistructured interviews with 47 therapists. We found that 82% of therapists and 75% of interviews included reference to implicit clinical judgments. Therapists referred to these judgments as a cognitive process that relied on knowledge acquired through past clinical experiences and was primarily based on nonverbal cues and affective communication. Therapists used implicit processes when evaluating how to facilitate a good

Sexual Coercion by Women: The Influence of Pornography and Narcissistic and Histrionic Personality Disorder Traits.

Largely overlooked in the literature, this study investigated factors influencing women's use of sexual coercion. Specifically, pornography use and personality disorder traits linked with poor impulse control, emotional regulation, and superior sense of sexual desirability were considered. Women (N = 142) aged 16-53 years (M = 24.23, SD = 7.06) were recruited from community and student populations. Participants completed the Narcissistic and Histrionic subscales of the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4, in addition to the Cyber-Pornography Use Inventory to explore the influence of their p

Children with autism spectrum disorders who do not develop phrase speech in the preschool years.

There is uncertainty about the proportion of children with autism spectrum disorders who do not develop phrase speech during the preschool years. The main purpose of this study was to examine this ratio in a population-based community sample of children. The cohort consisted of 165 children (141 boys, 24 girls) with autism spectrum disorders aged 4-6 years followed longitudinally over 2 years during which time they had received intervention at a specialized autism center. In this study, data collected at the 2-year follow-up were used. Three categories of expressive language were defined: nonv

Issues in the use of visual supports to promote communication in individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

PURPOSE: Visual supports are widely used and generally regarded as an effective resource for intervention with individuals who function on the autism spectrum. More cross-contextual research into their efficacy is required. METHOD AND OUTCOMES: In this article, we selectively review the research literature around visual supports based on an original conceptual model that highlights their contribution in the interpersonal social and communicative milieu of classrooms, homes and other daily living contexts. Attention is drawn to a range of practical and research issues and challenges in the use

[Syndrome of cerebral non-dominant hemisphere].

In this review the meaning of cerebral hemispheric function is discussed with special emphasis in non-dominant cerebral hemisphere and particularly in the lesion of commissural, association, projection of white matter fibers. Clinical characteristics depend on etiology, localization, extension and particularly the period of brain development. The following are common findings in these patients: left hemiplegia, abnormal prosody and non verbal communication, anomalies visiospatial perception, organization, and social interaction. Similar symptoms are also present in some developmental disorders

Nonverbal expression in autism of Asperger type.

Short unstructured social interactions between a volunteer interviewer, an adult with autism of Asperger type, and a control subject with a schizoid personality disorder were video-recorded. Asperger subjects tended to look less at the other person, to make more self-stimulatory gestures, and to look at the interviewer significantly less than normal subjects, and substantially less than schizoid subjects, during the periods when the interviewer was vocalizing although there were no such differences when the interviewer was listening. We suggest that the gaze avoidance of autism may in actualit

Involving Nonspeaking and Speaking Children in Clinical Encounters: An Observational Study of Real-World Clinical Encounters.

AIM: This study aimed to identify diverse ways nonspeaking and speaking children are involved in clinical encounters. METHODS: The study analysed video recordings of paediatric palliative care encounters in Australia. Conversation analytic coding methods were used to identify embodied (e.g., gesture) and vocal (e.g., grunting) modes of interaction used by all children and lexical verbalisations (i.e., words) used by speaking children. Analysis focused on interactions between children and adults (both family members and clinicians). RESULTS: A total of 38 child patients (seven speaking, 31 no

Confirmatory factor analysis of the Adult Asperger Assessment: the association of symptom domains within a clinical population.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a behaviourally defined disorder characterised by impairments in three domains of social interaction, communication, and repetitive, stereotyped behaviours and activities. Proposed changes to diagnostic criteria suggest that the diagnostic triad may no longer fit as the best way to conceptualise ASD, and that social and communication impairments should be considered as a single domain. The aim of this study was to examine the structure of symptom domains within the Adult Asperger Assessment (AAA; Baron-Cohen, Wheelwright, Robinson, & Woodbury-Smith, 2005), a d

Communication skills among females with Rett syndrome.

The present study describes communicative behaviors of 42 Norwegian girls and women with Rett syndrome (RS) aged 2 1/2-47 years. Most of them did not seem to show behaviors which may be interpreted as indicative of an intention to communicate. Many did not use gaze shifts and the shifts of those who did were usually limited to 1-3 turns. The implication for intervention is a need to apply structured overinterpretation where significant people in the environment systematic interpret behaviors indicative of interests, needs and preferences as communicative, as well as structured total communicat

Lost in Translation: Barriers in Psychiatric Care for Patients With Communication Impairments.

Effective communication is central to psychiatric evaluation and treatment. Patients with acquired communication impairments, such as post-stroke aphasia, are at increased risk for misdiagnosis, delayed care, and suboptimal treatment. We aim to better understand the unique needs of psychiatric patients with communication difficulties, common pitfalls in their care, and ways to improve clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of their mental health conditions. We present the case of a 49-year-old woman with a history of major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumati

Empathic Listening and Communication Competencies Among Oncology Healthcare Professionals in Croatia: A Cross-Sectional Study Conducted in 2025.

Introduction/Objectives: Patient-centered communication is essential in oncology care, where healthcare professionals often manage emotionally demanding conversations, uncertainty, complex decisions, and patient involvement in care. However, the relationship between communication knowledge, empathic listening, and practical communication skills remains insufficiently examined. This study aimed to examine the associations between communication knowledge, empathic listening, and interpersonal communication skills among healthcare professionals involved in oncology care. Methods: A cross-sectiona

Maintenance and generalization of skills acquired through picture exchange communication system (PECS) training: a long-term follow-up.

Purpose: To conduct a follow-up assessment of the maintenance of communication skills of a 7-year-old child with autism spectrum disorder, 3 years 7 months post PECS training; and investigate the effects of environmental adaptations on the child's PECS and vocal communications. Methods: An alternating-treatments design enabled comparison of the effects of two treatment conditions (an environmental adaptation to increase need and opportunities for communication, versus a continuation of baseline procedures) on the child's PECS and vocal communications in the child's home. Results: Baseline data

Non-verbal communication in severe aphasia: influence of aphasia, apraxia, or semantic processing?

Patients suffering from severe aphasia have to rely on non-verbal means of communication to convey a message. However, to date it is not clear which patients are able to do so. Clinical experience indicates that some patients use non-verbal communication strategies like gesturing very efficiently whereas others fail to transmit semantic content by non-verbal means. Concerns have been expressed that limb apraxia would affect the production of communicative gestures. Research investigating if and how apraxia influences the production of communicative gestures, led to contradictory outcomes. The

[Detection and specific studies in procedural learning difficulties].

INTRODUCTION: The main disabilities in non-verbal learning disorder (NLD) are: the acquisition and automating of motor and cognitive processes, visual spatial integration, motor coordination, executive functions, difficulty in comprehension of the context, and social skills. AIMS. To review the research to date on NLD, and to discuss whether the term 'procedural learning disorder' (PLD) would be more suitable to refer to NLD. DEVELOPMENT: A considerable amount of research suggests a neurological correlate of PLD with dysfunctions in the 'posterior' attention system, or the right hemisphere, o

Elective mutism: origins in stranger anxiety and selective attention.

Through a focus on the events of early infancy, the author interprets elective mutism on the basis of the infant's responses to discrepancies from expected stimuli. Initially, the child's silence derives from a "freezing" of action when exposed to perceived danger. Subsequently, aberrant or fearful stimuli are minimized by the child's apparent unresponsiveness. Through identification with the parent, the child imbues elective mutism with information value as a pause to signal impending communication. Mutism later represents an identification that is displaced from the parent to "stranger" adul

Nonverbal dialogue with the brain-damaged elderly.

In a population of twelve 63- to 89-year-old residents of a nursing home, rank-ordered scores of copying errors on the revised Benton visual retention test were found to be significantly correlated with the rotational shifts in the Minnesota percepto-diagnostic test. Residents on both ends of the continuum of brain damage could paint interesting, expressive and/or original pictures, in spite of the fact that the first eight residents were on psychotropic medication and the last four were occasionally handicapped by constructional apraxia. Ten adjudicators ranked pairs of figure drawings for ea

Assessing Nonverbal Interaction Dynamics in Therapeutic Relationships: a Proof-of-Concept Study using Motion Energy Analysis and Nonlinear Time-Series Analysis.

This study examined nonverbal synchronization as a means of assessing relational processes within forensic youth psychiatry. The primary aim was to explore whether Movement Energy Analysis (MEA) combined with Cross-Recurrence Quantification Analysis (CRQA) can provide clinically meaningful insight into therapist-client interaction dynamics and potentially inform clinical supervision. We investigated synchronized bodily movement in two therapeutic relationships involving the same client: one with a key worker and one with a process supporter, whose roles imply distinct therapeutic behaviors. A new psychometric tool for evaluating nonverbal social cue-following: regression-based normative data for children 6 to 10 years old.

The ability to follow nonverbal social cues is impaired in several disorders. Our aim was to collect normative data for the first psychometric test (TooN) that assesses this skill in children. The normative sample consisted of 339 typically developing children aged 6 to 10. TooN is a computerized tool that includes 120 trials in which children must press a button as soon as possible when an object appears on the right or left side of the screen. Each object is preceded by a video of a model gazing and/or pointing to the side where the object appears (i.e. congruent condition) or the opposite s
