Training needs and evaluation of a neuro-HIV training module for non-physician healthcare workers in western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Recent efforts to improve neurological care in resource-limited settings have focused on providing training to non-physician healthcare workers. METHODS: A one-day neuro-HIV training module emphasizing HIV-associated dementia (HAD) and peripheral neuropathy was provided to 71 health care workers in western Kenya. Pre- and post-tests were administered to 55 participants. RESULTS: Mean age of participants was 29 years, 53% were clinical officers and 40% were nurses. Self-reported comfort was significantly higher for treating medical versus neurologic conditions (p<0.001). After tra

Gett'n on the bus: evaluation of Sentinel City®3.0 virtual simulation in community/population health clinical placement.

Objectives The purpose of this project was to implement and evaluate the integration of a computer-based virtual simulation program into a community clinical course as an alternative or complement to conventional clinical with agencies or neighbourhoods. Securing quality community health clinical opportunities for undergraduate nursing students remains challenging. In addition, evidence of a theory-practice gap in community clinical education, particularly in non-traditional settings, suggests that nurse educators need to adopt different pedagogies to ensure that students will gain competencie

The development and implementation of a community engagement strategy to improve maternal health in southern Mozambique.

Delays to seek medical help can contribute to maternal deaths particularly in community settings at home or on the road to a health facility. Community engagement (CE) can improve care-seeking behaviours and complements community-based interventions strengthening maternal health. The purpose of this paper is to describe the process undertaken to develop and implement a large-scale community engagement strategy in rural southern Mozambique. The CE strategy was developed within the context of the "Community-Level Interventions for Pre-eclampsia" (NCT01911494) conducted between 2015-2017 in south

Wound staging: can nurses apply classroom education to the clinical setting?

Traditionally, education on wound staging has been conducted in the classroom using drawings, photographs or slides to illustrate examples of wound stages. These methods portray wounds two-dimensionally, but clinically, wounds are three-dimensional. Seven home care nurses in central Florida were given a pre-test and post-test of 16 slides, four of each stage. Field visits with three of these nurses were then conducted by an ET nurse to evaluate the application of this education into clinical practice in the home setting. The questions studied were: Do nurses learn to accurately assess stages o

Managing chronic oedema: a collaborative community approach.

Chronic oedema affects over 100 000 people in the UK and is regularly treated by different health care professionals, most commonly community nurses. The effect of chronic oedema on patients can be both physical and emotional and is a huge financial burden on the NHS. Collaborative working between lymphoedema services and community nurses is outlined in this article, highlighting potential benefits to patient care and substantial cost savings. Modified lymphoedema management strategies to treat chronic oedema effectively are identified with the emphasis on joint packages of care and patient go

Integrated Hospital-Territory Organizational Models and the Role of Family and Community Nurses in the Management of Chronic Conditions: A Scoping Review.

Background and Objectives: One of the challenges of modern healthcare systems, in terms of economic and organizational sustainability and the impact on patients' quality of life, is the progressive increase in chronicity and care complexity. In this scenario, hospital-community integration models represent possible strategies to ensure the continuity of care, reduce readmission rates, and improve clinical outcomes. This study aims to map integrated care models for patients with chronic diseases, with active involvement of the family and community nurse, describing their functions and associate

Conceptualization and nursing implications of self-imposed activity limitation among community-dwelling elders.

The purposes of this paper are to explore, from a theoretical perspective, explanations for why some community-dwelling elders self-impose activity limitations (SIALs); to develop an integrated explanation for SIAL from a nursing perspective; and to identify some clinical implications of relevance to public health nursing practice. Activity limitation is an important risk factor for functional decline, morbidity, and mortality among community-dwelling elders. Many studies have focused on disease and environmental influences on activity limitations. The intrinsic processes associated with volun

An exploration of district nurses' perception of occupational stress.

Many studies in nurse occupational stress have been carried out on high-dependency areas in general nursing, while community nursing has been neglected. District nurses, however, appear to be under increasing pressure, especially in the light of recent NHS reforms. This study aimed to explore district nurses' experiences in relation to the range and severity of stressful work-related events encountered in district nursing practice. The study was undertaken in a Yorkshire community healthcare NHS trust, with a convenience sample of 50 qualified district nurses, of which 38 successfully complete

Assessing the health of homeless people.

New guidance on assessing the health of homeless people features an assessment template for community nurses working with this group. It includes key questions on general physical health, mental health, long-term conditions, substance use, sexual health and housing. It also incorporates template care plans for use by both nurses and patients, and includes Read Codes for practice-based settings. This article looks at the impact homelessness can have on health, and summarises the Queen's Nursing Institute's guidance on assessing the healthcare needs of homeless people.

Nurses' Experiences of Grief Care for Terminally Ill Cancer Patients and Their Families: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Grief care is a vital yet emotionally demanding component of end-of-life nursing for patients with terminal cancer, with significant implications for family and community well-being. In Jordanian private hospitals, cultural sensitivities surrounding death and limited formal grief-care education may challenge nurses' ability to support patients and families effectively, with implications for sustainable healthcare practice. PURPOSE: This study explored nurses' experiences of grief care work with dying patients and their families from a community health nursing perspective in a Jord

Training needs of community nurses in the assessment and management of urinary continence.

The wide-ranging and demanding role of community nurses is widely recognised. They need to be able to assess and manage a multitude of medical symptoms, general health issues and social factors. As a result, it is essential to have an expansive knowledge base as a starting point. However, the challenge of working in the community, often alone, also means needing a high level of expertise to tackle some challenging and demanding situations. It is essential to recognise this when exploring the training needs of community-based clinicians, as training needs assessment, and any subsequent plans to

Tried, true, and new: public health nursing in a county substance abuse treatment system.

The Milwaukee Target Cities (MTC) project was the only site within 19 federally funded Target Cities programs to feature a public health nursing model as its sole means of providing comprehensive health-related services to indigent substance abuse clients. We first describe MTC's implementation process, focusing on the public health nursing component, and then present a program evaluation section with selected findings from the ongoing qualitative evaluation. Initially, misunderstandings about the nurses' community-based, family-centered strategy of assuring access to health care through cross
