Increases in diagnosis and management of obstetric and neonatal complications in district hospitals during a high intensity nurse-mentoring program in Bihar, India.

Maternal and neonatal mortality in Bihar, India was far higher than the aspirational levels set out by the Sustainable Development Goals. Provider training programs have been implemented in many low-resource settings to improve obstetric and neonatal outcomes. This longitudinal investigation assessed diagnoses and management of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, birth asphyxia (BA), and low birth weight (LBW), as part of the CARE's AMANAT program in 22 District Hospitals in Bihar, between 2015 and 2017. Physicians and nurse mentors conducted clinical instruction,

Educational outcomes associated with providing a comprehensive guidelines program about nursing care of preterm neonates receiving total parenteral nutrition.

Poor understanding or practice of Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) causes devastating complications. Therefore, good Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nursing care for preterm neonates and close monitoring of complications is essential for successful TPN therapy. The study was conducted in NICU at Ain Shams University Hospital in Cairo, Egypt, using a quasi-experimental research design with prepost intervention assessments. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire sheet and an observation checklist (prepost format) and developed a comprehensive guidelines program about nurs

The effectiveness of a structured nursing intervention program on maternal stress and ability among mothers of premature infants in a neonatal intensive care unit.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effectiveness of a structured nursing intervention program on maternal stress and NICU-related maternal ability after the admission of premature infants to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). BACKGROUND: Mothers of premature infants may face stress having premature infants, and their infants may be admitted to the NICU for a few weeks or months. The mothers' experience of stress would be worse if they have low knowledge and poor NICU-related maternal ability. Mothers of infants admitted to the NICU require well-planned interventions to cope with psyc

Immunoglobulin transfer from immune-reconstituted SCID mice to nursing neonates: blood distribution of antibody and association with perinatal virus protection.

Previous work in our laboratory has shown that fetal protection from maternal transmission of the murine lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus (LDV) infection is mediated by adoptive transfer of maternal anti-viral immunity. In the present report, we have characterized reconstitution of immunity in immunodeficient SCID mice following transplantation with BALB/c spleen cells, and studied the fate and distribution of maternally-derived antibodies after passage to neonatal SCID mice by nursing. Immune-reconstituted SCID mice maintained stable immunity for up to 7 months post-transplantation, duri

Pharmacokinetics of acetaminophen, antipyrine, and salicylic acid in the lactating and nursing rabbit, with model predictions of milk to serum concentration ratios and neonatal dose.

The rabbit was utilized for examining the pharmacokinetics of three compounds (acetaminophen, AC; antipyrine, AN; and salicylic acid, SA) in nursing adults and their suckling offspring and for assessing the ability of a diffusional model to predict milk to serum drug concentration ratios (M/S) from in vitro experiments. AC, AN, and SA serum concentration time profiles declined monoexponentially for both adults and their pups. The mean systemic clearance (Cls) for AC in the adults and pups was 16.1 and 13.7 ml/min/kg, respectively. The mean half-lives of AC (t1/2) were 25.5 and 33.3 min in the

Nurse-performed POCUS-guided targeted chest physiotherapy in term neonates with severe pneumonia: protocol for a stepped-wedge cluster randomised trial.

INTRODUCTION: Severe pneumonia in term neonates frequently leads to acute respiratory failure requiring invasive mechanical ventilation. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) can identify pulmonary consolidation at the bedside without ionising radiation, while chest physiotherapy (CPT) may help mobilise secretions and improve aeration. We aim to evaluate whether a nurse-performed POCUS-guided targeted CPT care pathway shortens the duration of invasive mechanical ventilation in term neonates with severe pneumonia. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This multicentre stepped-wedge cluster randomised trial will be

Lactational passage of fusaric acid from the feed of nursing dams to the neonate rat and effects on pineal neurochemistry in the F1 and F2 generations at weaning.

Fusaric acid is produced by several species of Fusarium and is found in corn, corn-based foods and feeds, wheat, barley, and other cereal grains. Given parenterally to rats, the mycotoxin affects neurochemical parameters in the pineal gland associated with growth and maturation. Since little information exists concerning the dietary effects of fusaric acid, the mycotoxin was mixed with feed at 10, 75, and 200 ppm and fed ad libitum to pregnant rats (F0 dams) from d 11-12 of gestation, through parturition and weaning (F1 generation). On d 4 postpartum, F1 pups were culled to 9-10 pups/litter; t

Exploring the long-term impact of a nurse-midwife mentorship intervention in Neno district, Malawi: a secondary data analysis of maternal and neonatal complications.

BACKGROUND: There is critical need to strengthen the global nursing and midwifery workforce. This is especially true in Malawi where they are the primary providers of obstetric and neonatal care. In Neno district, Malawi, in 2017, we implemented an intensive training and longitudinal bedside mentorship intervention for nurses and midwives. From inception, there was a pre-planned project target completion after 5 years, including a staged handover to local ownership after 3 years. The objective of this study was to assess differences in reported maternal and neonatal complications following pro

Current Practices and Attitudes Regarding Use of Inhaled Nitric Oxide in the NICU: Results From a Survey of Members of the National Association of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Excessive supplemental oxygen exposure in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can be associated with oxygen-related toxicities, which can lead to negative clinical consequences. Use of inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) can be a successful strategy for avoiding hyperoxia in the NICU. iNO selectively produces pulmonary vasodilation and has been shown to improve oxygenation parameters across the spectrum of disease severity, from mild to very severe, in neonates with hypoxic respiratory failure associated with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn. PURPOSE: An online survey w
